La Historia de la msica es el estudio de las diferentes tradiciones en la msica y su ordenacin en el tiempo.

Dado que toda cultura conocida ha tenido alguna forma de manifestacin musical, la Historia de la msica abarca a todas las sociedades y pocas, y no se limita, como ha venido siendo habitual, a occidente, donde se ha utilizado la expresin historia de la msica para referirse a la historia de la msica Europea y su evolucin en el mundo occidental. La msica de una cultura est estrechamente relacionada con otros aspectos de la cultura, como la organizacin poltica y econ mica, el desarrollo tcnico, la actitud de los compositores y su relacin con los oyentes, las ideas estticas ms generalizadas de cada comunidad, la visin acerca de la funcin del arte en la sociedad, as como las variantes biogrficas de cada autor.
