KARE KIT
The Life Support System for Family and Professional Caregivers

WHY VIVA! KARE KIT?

The problem is threefold: a. Our population is aging at a rapid pace b. There is a major shortage of health care professionals c. Because of this, both family and professional caregivers are needed to serve as an extension of the health care workforce, but they generally dont have the tools and the training to do their jobs effectively The Solution begins with the: Viva! Kare Kit

LIFE EXPECTANCY

With medical advances in combating disease and people taking better care of themselves, the average life expectancy of a male is now 78 years of age and for a female, 84 years of age. Eighty Five plus is the fastest growing segment of the population! After 2011, 10,000 Boomers will turn 65 every day approximately 300,000 per month

THE US CENSUS BUREAU

According to the US Census Bureau The world is about to cross a demographic landmark of huge social and economic importance, with the proportion of the global population 65 and over set to outnumber children under five for the first time (U.S. Census Bureau, March 2006).

Year 2010 2020 2030 2040

Population # of Age 60+ 307 M 332 M 350 M 370 M 102,000 M 133,500 M 162,000 M 180,000 M

Percentage of Population 33.3 40.2 46.3 48.6

SEVERE SHORTAGE OF HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS Nationwide there are approximately 1 to 2.3 physicians per 1-2,000 people. By 2020 the United States could experience a shortage of between 54,000 and 228,000 primary care doctors Two things driving this shortage are health care reform and the Baby Boomer generation becoming Medicare-aged. Not only is there a decline in the number of primary adult care doctors, but there is also a shortage of nurses, physicians assistants and community healthcare workers

HEALTH CARE WORKFORCE DEFINITION

The national Ad Hoc committee (congressional committee) that was assigned to determine the healthcare needs of Americans over the age of 65 concluded that the definition of health care workforce must be expanded to include: health care professionals direct-care workers (an eastern U.S. term for paid Professional Caregivers) informal Family caregivers and the patients themselves.

THE FAMILY CAREGIVER

FAMILY CAREGIVING STATISTICS

More than 65 million people, 29% of the U.S. population, provide care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member or friend during any given year and spend an average of 20 hours per week providing care for their loved one (National
Alliance for Caregiving in collaboration with AARP).

This number is expected to almost double over the next 20 years

FAMILY CAREGIVING STATISTICS CONT.

The value of the services family caregivers provide for "free," when caring for older adults, is estimated to be $375 billion a year. That is almost twice as much as is actually spent on homecare and nursing home services combined
(National Alliance for Caregiving and Evercare).

FAMILY CAREGIVING STATISTICS CONT.

The typical family caregiver is a 49-year-old woman caring for her widowed 69-year-old mother who does not live with her. She is married and employed. Approximately 66% of family caregivers are women. More than 37% have children or grandchildren under 18 years old living with them (National Alliance for Caregiving in
collaboration with AARP).

FAMILY CAREGIVING STATISTICS CONT.

Family caregivers experiencing extreme stress have been shown to age prematurely. This level of stress can take as much as 10 years off a family caregiver's life (Elissa S. Epel, Dec 7, 2004).
