HB363 (McClellan) provides that a court may include in a protective order provisions granting to the petitioner the care, custody, and control of an animal owned, possessed, or kept by either the petitioner, the respondent, or a child residing in the household. Virginia Farm Bureau opposes this legislation. HB888 (Alexander) allows any locality to prohibit the tethering of animals. Virginia Farm Bureau opposes this legislation. SB610 (Black) redefines agricultural animals to include certain companion animals including dogs. The legislation also changes how agricultural animals are regulated and handled. Virginia Farm Bureau opposes changing the definition of agricultural animals and has a number of concerns with the legislation. We are working with the patron to address these issues.
