PANEL DISCUSSION

INTRODUCTION The discussion technique of learning is based on the modern theory of organization .The assumption of this theory is that every member of the organization has the capacity to initiate and solve the problem and brings certain attitude and values to the organization .

ORIGIN OF PANEL DISCUSSION TECHNIQUE

This technique at the first time was used by Herry A Ober Streets in 1929. He organized a discussion for small group for definite period for the audience. At the end of the discussion audience had also participated .

Generally ,this type of panel discussion are organized on television and radio .The current topic are considered for such program .

TYPES OF PANEL DICUSSION



The group discussion is organized in different forms for different levels, for different purposes and on different themes .It may be of two types :

 Public

Panel Discussion  Educational panel discussion .

1. PUBLIC PANEL DISCUSSION

This

type of panel discussion are organized for the common men problems .

Current problem like educated unemployment ,annual budget, increase in price things etc topics are taken and are organized in television program

It is used in educational institution to provide factual and conceptual knowledge and clarification of certain theories and principles .

Eg The symposium , seminar , conference and Workshop are commonly organized

CHARACTERISTICS OF PANEL DISCUSSION

The main characteristics of panel discussion technique are  Develops the ability of problem solving.  Provide us the opportunity to understand problem nature or theme of the discussion .  Develops ability of presentation or theme and giving their point of view logically.

TECHNIQUES OF PANEL DISCUSSION

1.INSTRUCTOR
 In

the panel discussion, most important role is of an instructor .It is the responsibility of instructor to decide how, where, and when panel discussion will be organized schedule of panel discussion is prepared by him.

In

the panel discussion moderator has to do significant job .He has to keep discussion or theme and encourages the interaction among members .

There are four to ten panelists in the panel discussion. The panelists must have the mastery on the theme of the discussion .

AUDIENCE
 After

ADVANTAGES OF PANEL DISCUSSION TECHNIQUE

This instructional technique has the following advantages .  The technique encourages social learning .  It is used to develop the ability of problem solving and logical thinking .  It develops the interest and light type of attitude towards the problem

PROCEDURE OF PANEL DISCUSSION

The

leader or moderator introduce the topic and the . panelists presents their views and opinions regarding the issues or topic for a set amount of time .

CONT  The panelists discuss the issue or topic with each other by asking questions for reacting to the views and opnions of their panel members  The leader or moderator process the discussion and provide us a summary of panel presentations an discussion .

CONT  The leader or moderator calls for a forum period during which the members of the class may participate by addressing questions to various panel members or by voicing their views and opinions

LIMITATIONS OF PANEL DICUSSION TECHNIQUE

The following are the limitations of this technique :  There are chances to deviate from theme at time of discussion, hence the purpose of the panel discuss is not achieved  Some members dominate the discussion and do not provide the opportunities to participate others in discussion. discussion.

SUGGESTIONS FOR ORGANISING PANEL DISCUSSION

 should

be rehearsal before the actual panel discussion  sitting arrangement of panelists and audience should be such that every one should be of equal distance so that they can observe each other .

CONCLUSION
Thus panel discussion is a socialized group conversation which help the audience further clarify and evaluate their positions regarding specific issues or topics being discussed, increase their understanding and facilitate cognitive learning. learning.
