design elements

Shape: Refers to the outline of the piece. It defines contour.

1.

2. Form: The three dimensional projection of the shape. It has volume, dimension and the appearance of mass. This element is used in sculpture and architecture as well. 3. Texture: The roughness or smoothness of a surface. It can create interest. It can create illusion (i.e. giving appearance of softness when the work is actually hard.) It can imply movement. 4. Proportion: For example, when making a set of earrings and pendants, consider if you want each piece to be the same size, or should the earrings be smaller than the pendant. Do you want to add interest and draw the eye by graduating the sizes, or add accentuation? 5. Colour: In Silversmithing we can apply colour by using different metals, oxidization and the use of gem stones.
