Environmental Concerns:
Godrej has been doing a lot of work for the environment out of the belief that if attention is not given to this aspect, all the other gains would be nullified. It has associated with India's largest conservation NGO, WWF-India, through the late Mr. S.P. Godrej, who was its founder Trustee and President. The WWFIndia Secretariat is housed at the Pirojsha Godrej National Conservation Centre (PGNCC), New Delhi, towards which we have already contributed a Crore and half rupees. The PGNCC was inaugurated on November 3, 1989 in New Delhi by the then President of India, Mr. R. Venkatraman, in the presence of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and President of WWF--International. Godrej also strongly feel that Nature has blessed our country so richly in a number of ways. Yet, instead of being trustees of Nature, India has degraded our land to lower depths than many less fortunate countries. Godrejs concerns for the wildlife too are well documented. The group has been associated with TRAFFIC-India (Trade Record Analysis of Flora and Fauna in Commerce), a division of WWF-India, which is responsible for monitoring and studying legal and illegal trade in wildlife and its derivatives, thus contributing to the enforcement aspects of bio-diversity conservation. Their contributions to the cause received a major fillip, when the late Chairman, Mr. S. P. Godrej was conferred with the WWF 25th Anniversary Benefactor "White Pelican" Award. Godrej is also a member of the exclusive "1001: A Nature Trust", which is actively associated with preservation of nature, wildlife and the environment.

Godrej

and

Trees

It has been Godrejs endeavour to protect and propagate greenery. The name of Godrej has always associated with TREES. The late Mr. S. P. Godrej had been the Vice-President of the National Society of the Friends of Trees. For the past many years a well-stocked Tree Bank is maintained at Pirojshanagar and saplings are generously distributed, free of cost to voluntary

organisations

engaged

in

afforestation

work.

The uplifting traffic island gardens, particularly the Godrej Chowk with the flyover, have mitigated somewhat the drabness that surrounds us. The annual celebration of "Sarvajanik Holi" under the aegis Of the Sheriff's Office is yet another effort initiated by Godrej to curb the wanton destruction of trees. This community celebration has become a tradition in Mumbai.

The Godrej Ganga Ecology Panel

Concerned as we have been with environmental and ecological problems, we consider it our duty to contribute appropriately towards the management of the ecology in the Ganga Basin, which has a drainage area of 8,60,000 sq. kms., accounting for over 40% of the country's irrigated land and sustaining 37% of the population. This is a step in our endeavour to link business activities with ecological problems like that of the Ganga to restore it to its pristine purity and of the denudation of our forests. The Godrej Ganga Ecology Panel's major role will be to create public awareness. It will strive towards the involvement of the people living on the banks of the Ganga in realising the goals of the Action Plan involving the preservation of Heritage Monuments. It will support suitable non-government organisations and universities in the neighbourhood for ensuring research and social monitoring of the pollution.

Noise Pollution
In 1983, when the late Mr. S. P. Godrej was the Sheriff of Mumbai, he initiated a campaign against Noise Pollution. This effort made people aware of the illeffects of noise on our health. "Sarvajanik Diwali", celebrated annually, is a unique example, which demonstrates that Diwali is a festival of lights and not noise! The Forum Against Noise Pollution, which he used to head, is engaged in getting suitable legislation passed in order to combat this dangerous health hazard.

CSR Activities:
Mangrove Conservation by Soonabai Pirojsha Godrej Marine Ecology Centre
The Western bank of the Thane Creek is the single largest mangrove belt in Mumbai. A substantial tract of mangrove land is adjoining the Godrej & Boyce township, Pirojshanagar, in Vikhroli a suburb of Mumbai. Approximately 1,750 ha of the land with mangrove cover has been conserved by Soonabai Pirojsha Godrej Marine Ecology Centre. Well diversified and well protected, these are the last- quality mangroves in the city. The vast expanse of these mangroves serve as a second lung of the city only after the Sanjay Gandhi National Park which is under immense environmental pressures. The mangrove flora of Pirojshanagar is well diversified. There are 13 species of mangroves and mangrove associates. The faunal composition in the area is also equally diverse. Apart from 185 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles, 13 species of crabs, 7 species of prawns and 20 species of fish have been identified so far in the area. Mammals like jackals and mongoose also were sited many a times.

The SPG Marine Ecology Centre has taken several measures to protect these mangroves as a part of environmental and social responsibility. One of the major objectives of the centre is conservation of the marine diversity (mangrove ecosystem) through research, education/awareness building and regular monitoring. Simultaneously, centre is engaged in the propagation of various species of orchids, developing theme parks on medicinal plants and rare endemic plant species, palms amongst others.

Con servation Actitivities by SP Godrej Marine Ecology Centre

The Soonabai Pirojsha Godrej Marine Ecology Centre has undertaken several measures to protect the mangroves locally. Some of the programmes undertaken are: 1. Regular monitoring/ patrolling in creek side mangrove area (1750 acers) conserved by SPG Marine Ecology Centre to check possible destruction of existing mangroves and protecting rare species of mangroves.

2. Ecological restoration of degraded mangroves by raising nurseries and replenishing degraded mangrove areas through artificial regeneration in different areas. 3. Establishment of Mangrove Interpretation Centre: Dissemination of the information regarding the importance of mangrove conservation through film/slide shows, seminars, nature trails/camps, poster exhibitions etc.

Godrej has received BNHS Green Governance Award in 2005 for Category Conservation & Restoration of Habitat.

School

The Pragati Kendra and Udayachal Schools were inaugurated on Independence Day in 1955 by Pirojsha Godrej. It was the indomitable will of Mrs. Cooverbai

Vakil, the encouragement of Jaiben Godrej and the loving care of Soonuben that shaped these institutions. Udayachal means the 'Eastern Mountains', the mountains from where the sun, the moon and the myriad stars rise into the vast expanse of the sky. Udayachal truly symbolizes Godrejs philosophy - Help students from even the humblest origins to rise to the zenith of a rich and righteous life! At Udayachal, they strive to bring light into each childs life, by emphasising more on all - round development, rather than mere academics.

Trusts:
The manifold Godrej charities include: the Godrej Charitable Wing of the Breach Candy Hospital, the World Wide Fund for Nature-India and its headquarters-the Pirojsha Godrej National Conservation Centre - in Delhi, the Godrej Technical Institute at Bordi, Pirojsha Godrej Research Laboratory, Soonabai Godrej Dance Academy Theatre, Naoroji Pirojsha Godrej Memorial Boating Station, and others too numerous to mention. Few could rival the company's philanthropy, turning over a full 30 per cent of its profits to charitable pursuits through the Pirojsha Godrej Foundation. Godrej also supports the Foundation for Medical Research, Mumbai, particularly for the cure of leprosy. Godrej have contributed huge sums of money to this Foundation. This Foundation is intended to develop an alternative model the immunological concept regarding leprosy cure. Through a rural health and research project, Godrej has striven to develop an alternative model for rural health care based on community participation, with the emphasis on preventive rather than curative aspects. As a part of the research programme carried out by Indian Cancer Research for testing the blood of vasectomised cases - in order to prepare suitable vaccines to be used as contraceptives- - about 49 persons volunteered and gave their blood which was being tested for their research programme. Samples of urine

of pregnant women are sent to Indian Cancer Research to help them develop suitable vaccines.

Family Planning:
Godrej are connected with the Family Planning Foundation, Which is a voluntary organisation devoted to promote Family Planning as a basic human right, as well as population Policies which can help bring about a balanced development of the resources of the country-both human and material - as a means towards raising the quality of life. "Pragati Kendra" imparts not only information regarding Family Planning but, through various social and cultural activities, provides for a better quality of life for the inhabitants of the township. A Family Planning Centre was opened in September 1957. Family Planning advice and conventional contraceptives at concessional rates were provided. Family Planning Exhibitions were held. A Vasectomy Centre was opened. Volunteers were trained in an intensive one-week orientation course. Incentives are offered to persons undergoing vasectomy and tubectomy operations. In 1965 a Research Centre was opened with the help of Dr. R. P. Soonawala and the Ford Foundation authorities. To give fillip to the family Planning Programme, the services of two American Peace Corps volunteers were engaged.

The Family Planning Programme is an integral part of the Family Welfare Programme". A "Well Baby Clinic" has been opened for giving advice to mothers about their children's health and hygiene as also for advising them about IUCD and oral contraceptives. About 1135 children have been treated so far at this clinic. This long-standing Family Planning programme has definitely been able to lift workers into the middle-class, at least at Godrej.
