Objective: To provide opportunities to express numbers as sums of products using number models that contain parentheses.

3rd Grade

MENTAL MATH
Use arrays, counters, or multiplication/division diagrams to solve:

Mr. Qian bought a package of 25 stickers. There were 5 stickers on each sheet. How many sheets of stickers were in the package?

If 6 children share 49 pennies equally, how many does each child get? How many extra pennies are there?

Ms. Cleveland has 34 children and 6 tables. Can she seat the same number of children at each table?

MATH MESSAGE

Sheila made two 3-point baskets and two 2-point baskets in a basketball game. How many points did she score in all? Write a number model that contains parentheses.

BASKETBALL

In basketball, players can score 2 or 3 points depending on where the shot is made. If a free throw is made, 1 point is scored.
