AS Physics Homework Practice with calculating uncertainties.

1. A rectangular block has a square face, and its dimensions are measured 3 times: Width: 3.76 cm, 3.77 cm, 3.77 cm Breadth: 3.75 cm, 3.75 cm, 3.76 cm Length: 12.33 cm, 12.35 cm, 12.24 cm. Working in m:, and always include correct units with each answer. 1. a. Calculate the mean values for each dimension

b. Calculate the absolute and percentage uncertainty for each dimension

c.

Quote each dimension with its absolute uncertainty using appropriate significant figures.

Width = Breadth = Length = d. Calculate the area of the square face, the percentage uncertainly of this face, then quote a value for the area with its absolute uncertainty , using appropriate rounding .

e. Calculate the volume of the block, the percentage uncertainly , then quote a value for the volume with its absolute uncertainty , using appropriate rounding .

f. The block has a mass of 456.70 0.01 g. Calculate its density in kgm-3, quoting the absolute uncertainty.

2. A wire has its diameter and length measured 3 times: Diameter (mm) = 4.56, 4.62, 4.59 Length (m) = 1.253, 1.246, 1.259 (a) Calculate the cross-sectional area of the wire, and quote your result along with the absolute uncertainty. Work in m2.

(b) Calculate the volume of the wire ( in m3), and quote your result along with the absolute uncertainty.
