Funding
sources
sought
for parks
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Moorestown Sun
With the goal to close the
loop, and put a long-debated
issue to rest, the Moorestown
Township Council agreed to
call a public meeting next
week to discuss funding
sources for the two remaining
field projects at Wesley Bishop
North and South.
Council members have al-
ready approved lighting im-
provements for Maple Young
and Jeff Dawson parks and a
complete makeover for Pryor
Park in recent weeks.
The council needs four votes
not a simple majority to
bond for the remaining proj-
ects. It only needs three votes,
Mayor John Button said, to
use funding from the Open
Space, Recreation, Farmland
and Historic Preservation
Trust Fund.
Wesley Bishop North is esti-
mated to cost about $1.51 mil-
lion to complete including
the construction of a second
artificial turf field, grating
work and parking lot improve-
ments but about half of the
cost is already covered
through private donations
from sport clubs.
Wesley Bishop South will
cost $475,000 for improvements
Council
examines
budget
options
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Moorestown Sun
The Moorestown Township
Council looked at several op-
tions for the 2012 budget and
its members are anxious to
pass an introductory version
of it at an upcoming meeting.
Township Financial Man-
ager Tom Merchel suggested
a $22.7 million 2012 budget
that would effectively in-
crease the township tax bill
for an average assessed home
of $529,800 in Moorestown by
$95.
Merchel was able to reduce
the proposed tax-rate in-
crease from the last budget
meeting by more than $40, as
health insurance costs were
decreased by $100,591. Appro-
priations in the 2012 budget
are down by almost $350,000,
he said.
The total tax levy in this
proposed budget is $16.1 mil-
lion, an increase of $682,469
from the 2011 levy.
A second scenario one
that Merchel said he does not
support would see the town-
ship tax rate remain the same
if the township uses $800,000
from its utility trust fund sur-
plus to cover the loss of rata-
bles and revenue in the town-
ship.
The utility fund is used for

The David Gentile Skatepark is once again going to be closed for an extended period of time. The park has
already been closed for part of 2009, all of 2010 and for the majority of 2011.
Skatepark closes (again)
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Moorestown Sun
After being closed for part of
2009, all of 2010, and the majority
of 2011, the David Gentile
Skatepark in Moorestown is once
again going to be closed for an ex-
tended period of time.
A regularly scheduled inspec-
tion of the park revealed several
of the wooden structures and ob-
stacles at the park are in dire
need of repairs. Theresa Miller,
township director of recreation,
said the repairs would cost the
township about $20,000.
The park first closed to the pub-
lic on April 19.
You always have to have quar-
terly maintenance done on the
park and it runs about $1,000,
which includes an inspection as
well. Based on the quarterly
maintenance that was just com-
pleted, the company found that
extra repairs have to be complet-
ed. The repairs that have to be
done now are up to $20,000,
Miller said.
Miller said there is no money
in the budget for the repairs to be
completed now.
Its a popular park with local
and out-of-town skaters, Miller
said. The township doesnt have
any concrete numbers of how
many visitors the park gets each
year, but it is usually packed with
young skateboarders, she said.
She said she had no idea if
the skatepark would be perma-
nently closed if the money could-
nt be found for the repairs. She
said her first task was to reach
out to the public to try to find op-
tions to reopen the park.
Because the park was built
more than 10 years ago, it was
built with mostly wooden struc-
tures and obstacles, Miller said.
Now, most skateparks are being
built completely out of concrete,
which cuts down on the annual
maintenance costs greatly.

Memorial Day ceremony
is May 28 at 10 a.m.
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Moorestown Sun
The Parks and Recreation De-
partment of Moorestown Town-
ship will once again host the an-
nual Memorial Day ceremony to
honor all of the local township
soldiers who have lost their lives
in the armed services.
Judith Young, an American
Gold Star mother and the mother
of Jeffery Young, who
Moorestowns Jeff Young Park is
named after, also coordinates the
event.
The Memorial Day ceremony
will be held on Monday, May 28, at
Memorial Field on South Church
Street beginning at 10 a.m. The
ceremony traditionally lasts for
about an hour.
The Moorestown High School
band will open the ceremony with
music, followed by the National
Anthem and flag raising.
An invocation, benediction,
traditional firing squad, and the
playing of Taps will be held at
the ceremony.
The featured speaker for the
ceremony will be Charles Ju-
liana, brother of a World War II
veteran who is enshrined on the
townships memorial wall.
William H. Snyder VFW Post
No. 42 and township officials will
also take part in the ceremony.
The event will be emceed by
Councilwoman Stacey Jordan.
Local Boy Scout, Cub Scout
and Girl Scout troops will be rep-
resented at the event.

Free Music Together
demonstrations
There will be two free demon-
stration classes of Music Togeth-
er at Moorestown School of
Music. The demonstrations will
be held on Tuesday, May 29 at
10:30 a.m. and Friday, June 8 at
9:30 a.m. Parents or caregivers of
preschoolers (ages 0-4) should call
(856) 235-7565 for more informa-
tion or to reserve their place in a
demo class.
Moorestown School of Music is
located at 301 Union St.,
Moorestown.
Music Together classes involve
infants, toddlers and preschoolers
and their parents or other care-
givers in informal singing, chant-
ing, moving, listening and instru-
ment playing activities that are
developmentally appropriate for
very young children. Music To-
gether offers parents instruction
in how to encourage their pre-
school children's musical develop-
ment by continuing the activities
outside of class.
To reserve a place in the demo
class, call (856) 235-7565 or email
info@msmnj.org.

Strawberry festival
set for June 1
The Annual Strawberry Festi-
val will be held on Friday, June 1,
from 6 to 9 p.m., rain or shine, at
the First Presbyterian Church in
Moorestown at the corner of
Bridgboro and Riverton roads.
This is a tradition for over 50
years, featuring homemade
cakes, ice cream and strawber-
ries.
Come listen to Bobs Bandits
Community Band, get your face
painted, enjoy a hayride or
bounce in the inflatables. Its a
wonderful way to head into sum-
mer and get out and see your
neighbors. Tickets are $5 for ages
3 and older (younger than 3 are
free) and available at the door or
in advance in the church office.
For information call (856) 235-
1688. Also, dont miss our mis-
sionwares, a global marketplace.
Support the youth mission teams

stand.
Miller said visitors using bikes
in the park, which is against com-
plex regulations, intensified the
damage to the park. Because the
bikes are much heavier than
skateboards, wooden obstacles de-
teriorate much quicker than nor-
mal.
Miller and the recreation de-
partment met with Dave McCol-
lister, the former owner of the
Black Diamond Skatepark in the
Moorestown Mall, to investigate
options for the park.
The park was named after
David Gentile, a Moorestown
High School football player who
was paralyzed from the neck
down in 1979. Gentile died in 2001
and his mother donated the fund-
ing for the 15,000 square-foot park
to be built.

When asked for his opinion,
Manager Scott Carew said the
townships fiscal health was good
moving forward in the next sever-
al years and it could support the
remaining projects from its gen-
eral fund.
However, the council currently
doesnt have the necessary votes
to bond out for the Wesley Bishop
North and South projects.
Councilwoman Stacey Jordan
again said she couldnt vote to
spend funding on the two expen-
sive projects when there were so
many unknowns moving for-
ward.
Im not comfortable gambling
with these projects when we dont
know the revenue source, she
said.
Councilman Chris Chiacchio
was not in attendance at the meet-
ing due to a death in his family,
according to Button but has
made it clear in past meetings he
doesnt support spending tax dol-
lars for the projects.
Its time to move forward with
this issue, Button said, because
there are other pressing issues
that need to be discussed in the
township as well.
Button said hes not advocating
or denying the use of the trust
fund for the project.
Lets just move on with this.
Weve talked about these projects
for a lot of time, he said.

W
e re all familiar with Me-
morial Day. We know that it
is a day set aside to honor
the brave men and women who made
the ultimate sacrifice to protect our
country and the freedom we have.
And we know that it is celebrated on
the last Monday in May, thereby creat-
ing a three-day weekend for most.
Maybe it shouldnt be that way.
Back when Memorial Day was first
established during the Civil War era, it
was observed on May 30. It had its own
special day, which, many will argue,
kept the focus on the meaning of the
day.
They have a point.
When one thinks of Memorial Day
these days, its easy to lose focus.
There are Memorial Day sales at
stores and the kick-off to summer
sentiment. That people have three
days off often overshadows what the
spirit of Memorial Day is all about.
We dont want to sound completely
negative. Many communities still take
pride in holding a thoughtful, mean-
ingful Memorial Day ceremony
and/or parade. We still see flags dis-
played. We still see a lot of people take
time to honor those who died serving
our country.
But we also cant help but think that
lumping Memorial Day into a three-
day weekend has diminished the
meaning of the day at least some-
what. There are too many distractions.
How many of us have made Memorial
Day weekend plans that have absolute-
ly nothing to do with honoring the
meaning of the day?
Memorial Day should be special. It
should be a time when every Ameri-
can reflects on the sacrifices made on
his or her behalf and takes the time to
pay proper respect. Nothing should
distract from those sentiments.
Will the three-day weekend be re-
placed with a move back to May 30?
Doubtful. Its going to be up to each in-
dividual to cut through the clutter and
honor those who made the ultimate
sacrifice.
Memorial Day
Three-day weekend or a return to a traditional day of remembrance?
Holiday weekend distracts
Memorial Day shouldnt be about
sales or heading to the beach. It
should be about honoring those who
died serving this country.
Unfortunately, the three-day weekend
distracts from that goal.
All 2011-2012 Adopt-a-Fire Hydrant
kids were sent an invention to attend the
annual thank you gathering held at
Moorestown Emergency Services Build-
ing, Fire Station 311. Some 10 of the 22 par-
ticipants who showed up were given the of-
ficial Adopt-a-Fire hydrant shirt on Mon-
day, May 14.
Even though they had an easy year with
no snow, they still had made the commit-
ment to participate and the Moorestown
Fire Department is very proud of all 22
kids who signed up.
The kids who adopted a fire hydrant
each promised that when the snow came
they would to dig out a 36-inch clear walk
space from the curb line into the front dis-
charge of the hydrant and dig out a 20-inch
walk space completely around the
hydrant assigned to them by the fire de-
partment.
This Moorestown Fire Department pro-
gram is designed and approved by the
Moorestown School System, for fourth-
graders only, and they must have their par-
ents signed consent.
Please visit the fire district website at

mation on the Adopt-a-Fire Hydrant pro-
gram.

capital improvements for town-
ship water and sewer infrastruc-
ture, Mayor John Button said.
Its a gimmicky solution to re-
ducing the tax rate, Councilman
Michael Testa said, and one that
would just result in township
councils of the future trying to
make up the $800,000 used for
this years budget.
Councilwoman Stacey Jordan
agreed to an extent, but didnt
completely throw out the idea of
using some of the utility fund to
manage the proposed tax in-
crease in this years budget.
Why dont we go down the
middle? We can take $425,000
from the fund and give it back to
township taxpayers, she said.
The council asked Merchel to
look at other cost-saving options
and at another budget scenario
using half of the utility fund.
Button said the council will
host another public budget meet-
ing prior to its next commission
meeting and will try to come to a
consensus on a scenario to be
able to pass an introductory 2012
budget.
Looking ahead at budgets for
2013 and 2014, Merchel noted a
proposed reassessment for town-
ship properties should stop the
bleeding for tax appeals in
Moorestown.
Also, Merchel said he is count-
ing on next years budget, in-
cluding $4 million in new rev-
enue from the sale of four liquor
licenses in the township.
While the tax rate would like-
ly increase in 2013 as well,
Merchel said, it could remain
flat in 2014 with the debt service
dropping by almost $700,000.
