Rational Numbers On A Number Line

Rational Numbers On A Number Line Lets learn to plot Rational Numbers on a Number Line : We know numbers can be represented in the range from to + . The representation of numbers in visual form is called representation of rational number on a number line. When we draw any line it extends from negative infinite to positive infinite. The line is divided into equal parts and in centre there exist a number zero. On right of zero are all positive numbers and on left of zero exist all negative numbers. The more we move toward positive direction, the successor of the previous number exist and the more we move towards negative direction, the predecessor of the number appears. Now we see that every rational number can be expressed in form of p/q, where p and q are integers and q <> 0.

Thus we conclude that whatever rational number is given, we first convert the rational number into the fraction. Now we need to locate the point on a number line. For this we first check if the number is a positive or a negative integer. If it is a positive integer, then it will appear on the right side of zero, and if it is a negative number, then it will appear on the left side of zero. Now let us check where the fraction will appear on the number line. To locate such point, we first check if the rational number is in form of a proper fraction or improper fraction. It is clear that if the rational number is in form of proper fraction, then we know that it exist between 0 and 1. But if the fraction is improper, then we first convert the fraction into mixed fraction and then locate its point. Let us understand it more clearly through an example: if we have 4/ 5, then we observe that this is a proper rational number, this clearly shows that 4/5 exist between 0 and 1. Now we simply divide the line between 0 and 1 in 5 equal parts ( equal to the denominator) . It can be done by simply drawing 4 lines at equal distance between 0 and 1.

Now from 0, towards positive direction fourth mark on the number line represents the point 4/5. Let us take another example of improper fraction, say 6/4. As it is an improper rational number, we first change it to mixed fraction, we get 12/4. It shows that this number is greater than 1 and less than 2, which clearly shows that it lies between 1 and 2. Now we simply divide the number between 1 and 2 in 4 equal parts, so we mark the second point which lies between 1 and 2. It is the desired point.
