A breathtaking flowering tree, instantly recognizable for its pink blossoms, which cover the tree in spring. Its beauty has bestowed recognition of it being one of the most beautiful flowering trees in the world. Common name: Pink trumpet tree, Pink poui, Pink tecoma, Rosy trumpet tree Botanical name: Tabebuia rosea Family: Bignoniaceae (jacaranda family) Pink trumpet tree is a native Bignoniaceae tree of America, distributed from northern Mexico south to northern Argentina and Asia. It is a common tree in Argentina's northeastern region, as well as in southeastern Bolivia. It is said to be indigenous to Trinidad and Tobago. Native to continental America, Pink trumpet is a tall, fast-growing tree reaching 25 to 30 m high and 1 m d.b.h. The crown is wide, stratified, and irregular, with a few thick, horizontal branches; the bole is straight, sometimes channeled at base. Leaves are palmately divided into 5 unequal leaflets. The oval/oblong leaflets have a rough-to-touch surface, entire margin and a pointed tapering tip. The central leaflet is larger than the rest. The leaflet size is variable between 3-18 inches. Flowering occurs between December and February, when the tree bursts into panicles of pink trumpet shaped flowers with yellow throats. Growing Environment: Grows nicely in full sun. Trees need minimal care when established. Water during warm months, less so during cold months. It is fairly fast-growing. Uses: Usually grown as an ornamental for its amazing color display. It is common in parts of the America's as a dooryard or street tree and is the national tree of Paraguay. A tea, called lapacho, is made from the inner bark and is used medicinally by some practitioners of herbal medicine. It supposedly has antibacterial and decongestant properties.
