Dear NABJ Family,
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Black Journalists, our
staff, and NABJs Convention Planning Committee, I have the privilege of welcoming
you to the associations 37th Annual Convention and Career Fair. This is a return to
New Orleans for NABJ as we last met here in 1983, 29 years ago. Dubbed by some as
Americans Most Interesting City, I am excited that each of you will have the opportunity
to experience the diversity, the excitement, the energy, and the warmth embodied by my
hometown.
New Orleans is a city rich in history and steeped in tradition, so its appropriate that we
will as always refect on NABJs mission and heritage, while taking stock of where the
industry is today. Yet, we must also be forward-looking and examine the role we must play
as newsroom innovators. The 2012 convention theme is #NABJ12: New Platforms. New Directions. New Orleans.
We begin the week with NABJs popular Learning Labs which will allow members the opportunity to receive
intensive training centered on career planning and development, multimedia reporting and storytelling, leadership
development and entrepreneurism. This will be followed by three full days of innovative workshops which will teach
you to become better journalists, managers, and media professionals.
Aside from the workshops there will also be thought-provoking and eye-opening plenary sessions which discuss
breaking news, industry changes, and hot topics. We will explore the impact of media attention on the Trayvon
Martin case and speak with his family, we will also sit down with some of the countrys top news executives, hear
analysis of the Supreme Court decision regarding the constitutionality of President Obamas health care reform law,
and preview the race for the White House as the election kicks into high gear.
For those ready to pursue a new professional opportunity, or who need to develop their networking skills, there
is always the opportunity to walk the foor of the career fair. Dozens of recruiters and companies will be on-site
interviewing candidates, critiquing work samples, and offering invaluable advice. While we unfortunately continue
to see downsizing in the nations newsrooms, one thing is for sure, recruiters know just how talented our members
are and the caliber of the contributions they make when hired.
Speaking of talent, we will recognize some of the most widely read and viewed work produced by members during
the Salute to Excellence Awards, and present special honors to our Journalist of the Year, Emerging Journalist
Award recipient, Legacy Award winner, professional and student Chapters of the Year, among other honorees. How
ftting it is that we honor our own in grand fashion.
As always NABJ is a party with a purpose and we will kick off the convention with a frst ever opening night
concert, preview summer blockbusters, and get a sneak peek at the fall television lineup. From songstress Melanie
Fiona, to actors Niecy Nash and Cedric the Entertainer, to flmmaker Spike Lee, there will be plenty of entertainers
who will help make the convention as fun as it is informative.
I would be remiss if I didnt thank our Convention Chair Rod Hicks, Program Chair Bent Wilson, Honorary
Convention Chair Paula Madison, Special Events Chair Carol Ash, our Executive Director Maurice Foster, and the
NABJ staff for working so tirelessly in planning what promises to be a memorable convention.

To My NABJ Family and Friends,
Thank you for making the journey to New Orleans for the National Association of
Black Journalists 37th annual Convention and Career Fair. What an exciting summer
this will be with the Summer Olympics and Democratic and Republican Conventions
on the horizon. Its even better that we kick off such an exciting summer together
here in New Orleans. This years schedule of programming and events offers
attendees ample opportunity for professional development and fun, while offering
our recruiters and sponsors the opportunity to interact with a membership which
I can truly say is a passionate community of informed, engaged, hard-working and
dedicated journalists and media professionals.
The events of this week would not be possible without the leadership of NABJs Board of Directors, the hard
working national offce staff, and an army of volunteers who step in to fll the gaps. Over the course of the
year we have endeavored to lay a foundation which would allow for a convention that was even better than
last years. It is so important to us that we offer something for everyone with training, social events, and
provocative discussions. NABJs conventions should be a destination not just for journalists, but also for those
interested in news, culture, and entertainment.
Since the convention and career fair offers such a great opportunity, we have had great success when it
comes to the number of registrants, partnered with engaged sponsors, attracted an impressive array of
exhibitors and vendors who will make the career fair a worthwhile experience, and are working to impact the
community with the service projects organized as part of NABJ Day of Service.
While this time of year allows us to be under one roof, we are fortunate that NABJ continues to be an
organization that makes a difference 365 days a year. NABJ remains the largest organization of journalists of
color in the world, we continue to operate from a position of strength, and we are only going up.
There is still so much more we can do as an organization with a membership who partners with us, to bring
vision to fruition. Know that your NABJ is committed to the cause and staying the course. Your NABJ is an
organization responsible, responsive, and here for you.

Greetings,
Our return to New Orleans for the frst time in a generation is a welcomed part of
our journey. All of us watched in horror as Hurricane Katrina battered the city and
the journalists of color who cover it. It is with great resolve that we return to the
Crescent City, which much like our organization, is renewing itself every day.
Our programming, special events and entertainment take that history into
consideration. Were even going beyond journalism to interact with residents and
impact the community. Were sponsoring a town hall meeting for New Orleans
residents that focuses on the post-Katrina debate over how to best educate
Louisianas school children using public funds. Were also helping some families
rebuild their homes that were destroyed during Katrina, and were donating books for students.
NABJ President Gregory Lee, Convention Program Chair Bent Wilson, Special Events Coordinator Carol Ash,
Honorary Convention Chair Paula Madison and local chapter President Nicondra Noorwood all worked with
me in designing a convention that will inform you of the latest in journalistic tools and technology, teach you
new approaches to coverage and equip you with strategies for starting and maintaining a successful business.
Many dedicated volunteers, the NABJ board, staff and founders; and the New Orleans Association of Black
Journalists also played a vital role in creating #NABJ12.
We were motivated by our commitment to fostering change in coverage and hiring in newsrooms and our
decision to leave UNITY. We remain committed to diversity and stand alongside our Hispanic, Asian and
Native American sisters and brothers. Above all, we are committed to our members and helping them
navigate the evolving media landscape.

A stronger sense of purpose.
My mom was the smartest person I have ever known. She
raised the seven of us on her own after my dad died when
I was only 11. We never had much money, but I realize
now that because of things she taught us, we were rich.
I carry her wisdom with me throughout my daily work.
I also watched my mom struggle with diabetes. Thanks
in part to Lilly, I shared 25 years with her that otherwise
would not have been possible. And now I have the
opportunity to do the same for other people.
Once, in a VA hospital, I was approached by a Vietnam
veteran. He told me how his life was transformed by our
medicines. And thats when it clicked for me the REAL
impact of what we do here and the dramatic effect we have
on peoples lives. After that meeting, I had an even stronger
sense of purpose. Lillys done so much for my family and
for many others. And I hope the work I am doing today will
help my three children overcome some of the challenges
they might face tomorrow.

Brothers and Sisters of NABJ,

Im so pleased to serve as Honorary Convention Committee Chair in my home-away-
from-home town, New Orleans -- my husbands birthplace! This rich cultural gumbo
of the Big Easy provides us with the perfect setting for NABJ to step on out! So,
allow me to welcome you to New Platforms, New Directions and to New Orleans!
Heres where well sharpen our focus and deepen our commitment to the
fundamentals of great journalism: Integrity, Enterprise and Insight.
For the past 37 years, NABJ has been the preeminent source for Black journalists,
students and executives to convene, network and improve ourselves. As the media
landscape transitions to new directions and newer platforms, we must preserve our legacy as people of color
telling our own story from our own perspective.
My personal desire is for We People of the African Diaspora to re-connect with our ancestral tribes in Africa.
We at The Africa Channel believe we have to know our past in order to chart our future. And so we have
asked that our NABJ sponsorship include a number of DNA searches conducted by African Ancestry.
Among you are 20 of our fellow NABJ members whose DNA links to Africa will be revealed during sessions

Dear NABJ Family,
Welcome to New Orleans, one of my favorite cities on the planet! On behalf of
the Program Committee, I want to thank all of you who worked with us to create
workshops we hope you will fnd both targeted and relevant. With our shortened
deadlines this year, I thank everyone who submitted a workshop. We were
pleased to see such great submissions, which made the Program Committees job
much harder.
We wanted to ensure that we offered NABJ members a good balance of
workshops, focusing not only on the basics of journalism, but with the latest tools
and technology in new media. This balance was imperative, especially after an
April report from the American Society of News Editors found that the number of journalists of color in
the newsroom continues to decline. NABJ is a strong advocate for keeping its members employed and
thriving as journalists.
We have created programming to cover journalists, students, educators and communicators that was
specifcally designed to strengthen and enhance their skills, along with addressing the nations hot
topics. Workshops will cover myriad topics, including entrepreneurship, specialized journalism, the latest
technology in the news room, career transitions and media relations.
Our strong selection of Learning Labs and workshops along three tracks Perfecting Your Craft, Tech &
Tools and Innovation Station should have you well on your way to keeping your skills fresh or learning
new ones. We have put experts both within NABJ and from other journalism organizations -- in their
felds to lead these workshops.
I want to thank the Program Committee and panel moderators for all their hard work in creating workshops
I feel are relevant and timely as journalism and communications continue to change. I hope you take full
advantage of these workshops and continue your education long after the convention is over. Have a great

Chair for The National Association of Black Journalists Convention. We know you
will work hard while here in New Orleans, but we want you to play hard as well!
The Special Events committee worked tirelessly to ensure this is a convention you
will never forget, starting with a fantastic kickoff concert featuring Grammy Award
winning artist Melanie Fiona.
Our Opening Ceremony will give you a taste of New Orleans history and a favor of
traditional dance as authentic Mardi Gras Indians take the stage and entertain.

including how to write and publish a best seller.
You can get physical during our early morning Healthy NABJ workouts with U.S. Marines! Lace up your shoes

Mickey Mouse is in the house and hes ready to take you on a voyage through the magical world of Disney,
topped off with a special performance by American Idol winner and R&B superstar Ruben Studdard.
We are also extra proud to launch the frst NABJ Day of Service - a day of events allowing us to give back
to our host city. The NABJ Reads Block Party features food, music, entertainment and best of all, free books
for area teens. NABJ Rebuilds will change the lives of several families affected by Hurricane Katrina by giving
them newly rebuilt homes.
This year you have a Date with Decadence. Don your best, walk the red carpet and join us for the Salute to
Excellence, where we honor our best and brightest.

NABJ Family and Friends,
On behalf of Region V, welcome to exciting New Orleans and the 2012 NABJ
Convention & Career Fair! We are thrilled to have you here for our frst Crescent City
convention in 29 years.
Thanks to the New Orleans Association of Black Journalists and its president,
Nicondra Norwood, for their hard work in helping to prepare for our gathering
here. And thanks to the NABJ convention committee and staff for planning timely
professional development options for each of you.
We all are aware that our industry is changing every day, and some of our
members are facing uncertainty as media companies downsize staff as they transition to the digital age. Our
programming this year will equip you with training and skills to help you get through these uncertain times.
New Orleans, which still is recovering from Hurricane Katrina, is the perfect place for us to gather the reins of
the industry and help steer our profession. Each year, more and more former residents return to the city and
marvel at what the future will bring. And last year, New Orleans welcomed 8.75 million visitors, according to
the New Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Businesses once again are placing trust in the city. The Wall Street Journal declared the New Orleans area
as the most improved market for business in the country, climbing 44 positions from 77th in 2010 to 33rd in
2011. Meanwhile, Trem, one of the citys oldest neighborhoods that spawned an HBO series, is celebrating its
200th anniversary and its contribution to African-American music and culture.
Like New Orleans, we too shall rise.

Bienvenue NABJ Family,
We, the New Orleans Association of Black Journalists (NOABJ), are very excited
and humbled to welcome you to the 37th National Association of Black Journalists
Convention and Career Fair. When we were frst informed that our hosting duties
would be moved up by two years, we recognized the challenge, accepted and are
now prepared to offer you what we hope will be one of your most fulflling NABJ
experiences ever.
In many ways, New Orleans is the ideal location for an organization that is all about
diversity. We are an American city unique in that we not only embrace the cultures
that built us separately, but melded those cultures into one unique unto itself. We
are a city with folk art and fne art, the birthplace of Jazz, the home of Bounce, and the incubator of a culinary
tradition that blended African, French, Spanish, Native American and Caribbean styles with local ingredients
for an eating experience like no other.
We know many of you are visiting New Orleans for the frst time since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
We hope that you will have the opportunity to witness our progress as well as see how much more there is
to be done in a city flled with people of heart and perseverance. We hope that you take advantage of our
community service events to meet some of those people and see some of the places that may not be as
recognizable as our beloved Superdome-centered skyline and lauded French Quarter.
NOABJ hasnt forgotten about our reputation as a party town and we plan to deliver. Join us Thursday night
at the NOABJ scholarship fundraiser to hear some authentic New Orleans Brass Band music with a little extra
fair and learn how to Second Line. Have an unforgettable experience and help our young journalists learn the
skills needed for excellence.

WELCOME TO NEW ORLEANS

If youve never been to New Orleans, shame on you.
The City That Care Forgot is arguably a city that no one forgets after
visiting, be it as a native New Orleanian, transplant, visitor or working
journalist. Once known as an ultimate go-to party city (and still is), the
citys post-Hurricane Katrina retransformation has once again poised itself
as an international nucleus for economic development, real estate and
expanded cultural and recreational tourism.
We feel like were really kind of starting to hit our stride once again post-Katrina and beginning to compete
internationally as we did pre-Katrina, said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, during a March 2012 press
conference. Wed like to claim the banner of the best host city
And with good reason: according to Landrieu, a University of New Orleans Hospitality Research Center
study showed that in 2011, an unprecedented 8.75 million people focked to the Crescent City and spent
nearly $5.5 billion. Tourism offcials are looking to best the count after hosting the NCAA Final Four, 2012
BCS Championship, French Quarter Festival and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Furthermore,
approximately 75,000 tourism industry employees anticipate millions will visit the city this year for a
plethora of other events including the 2012 National Urban League Conference, New Orleans Wine and
Food Experience, 2012 Essence Music Festival, State Farm Bayou Classic, 2012 Voodoo Music Experience and
in 2013, the granddaddy of all American football games, Super Bowl XLVII.
We are an American city, unique in that we not only embrace the cultures that built us, but meld those
cultures into one, unique in its own right, said Nicondra Norwood, president of New Orleans Association of
Black Journalist and meteorologist at WVUE- Fox 8. We are a city of
history and history in the making.
More people from various walks of life are defnitely calling New
Orleans home and in increasing numbers, they are occupying
traditionally predominantly black neighborhoods such as Faubourg
Treme, Eastern New Orleans, the Lower Ninth Ward and Gentilly, areas
hit hard by Katrina. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, of the 343,829
residents living in New Orleans, 206,871 were African-American, 113,428
were Caucasian, 9,970 were Asian and 13,560 were of other races.
I think the diversifcation of certain areas of New Orleans is benefcial
for everyone, says Chammy Allen, a 30-something African-American
professional who moved to Gentilly in 2007. It allows people of different
cultures the opportunity to learn and grow from each other.
Charlotte Neveaux lived in Treme, the nations oldest surviving black
community, for 17 years before she moved to Uptown New Orleans
last year. Neveaux founded her business, Balloon Creations and Event
Planning, LLC., while she lived in Treme and still coordinates events for
many of the areas businesses.
What I love most about Treme is that at any given time, you can come out on your porch and fnd a second
line for any given reason at any time of the day or night, she said. There was a time when folks could peep
through the windows or even stand on the corners and listen to folks such as Uncle Lionel or Kermit Ruffns
play.
Every Tuesday night, Ruffns, a trumpet player who is seen regularly on the HBO series Treme, entertains
the masses at a packed Bullets Sports Bar, a popular Seventh Ward hole-in-the-wall that caters to locals
and visitors. Patrons can get a glimpse of the real NOLA throughout the city at places like Bullets and also
get a taste of its culture and history at various museums such as the New Orleans African American Museum,
located in Treme. This year, the museum is celebrating the neighborhoods bicentennial anniversary with
concerts, a day of service, tours, workshops and a club crawl.
While the museum and other historic institutions commemorate the citys history,
there is an infux of young professionals who are coming to the city, staying and
etching their own legacies, says realtor Romula Rhodes.
The one trend I notice most is that people are moving back to the city and
its become younger, she said. Were getting more young professionals since
Katrina and consequently, the old makeup of what was here is changing.
Neveaux, who raised her two sons in Treme, said while she welcomes the
newcomers, she would have liked to see more of her old neighbors and residents
return.
A younger generation is coming in, Neveaux said. But Im worried they wont
respect or appreciate the musical, especially the jazz heritage established here.
Lets hope we can keep that tradition living, along with others true to our city.

The Copy Editors Task Force includes copy desk managers, copy editors, news editors, line editors, layout and

schedule. We also encourage college students to pursue copy editing and other careers in newsrooms.

Monitoring the national media for discrimination and
other injustices to people in the African diaspora
in their coverage and employment practices. It
shall report to the Board of Directors and the
membership issues of concern.

CONSTITuTION AND OPERATING
PROCEDuRES
Considering any proposed amendments to the
Constitution and Operating Procedures suggested
by any full member. The Committee shall make
recommendations on such changes to the
membership for consideration according to the
guidelines established by the Constitution and
Operating Procedures.

FINANCE
Provide fnancial advice to ensure the Board of
Directors successfully meets its fnancial goals.
The committee shall also be available to provide
fnancial advice and counsel to the President,
Treasurer and Board of Directors, review and advise
the Board on the annual budget, review spending
and income quarterly. It shall be comprised of the
NABJ Treasurer, two former NABJ treasurers, two
independent fnancial advisors and a top executive
from a media company.

COuNCIL OF PRESIDENTS
Foster effective chapter management, develop
strategies for chapters to recruit and retain
members, develop strategies to assist chapters
in raising funds for scholarships and other award
programs. It shall also aggressively recruit members
to NABJ and work to reach a consensus and make
recommendations on how mutual problems can be
addressed and resolved within NABJ.

ELECTIONS
Oversee the election process and develop the rules
that apply to it. The committee shall set candidate
standards, rules, regulations and qualifcations for
nominations and regulations governing the process
and arbitrate any disputes to that procedure.
The Board of Directors will have the authority to
supersede decisions of the Committee by a two-
thirds vote of the Boards members.

Members of the National Association of Black
Journalists know that health issues are ranked
among the highest topics of interest to their viewers,
readers and listeners. Members also know that they
are susceptible to the same health challenges on
which they report: diabetes, heart disease, high blood
pressure, obesity, anxiety, insomnia, stress, substance
abuse, kidney disease and the list goes on and on.
Since journalists are disseminating expert advice from
health professionals to their audiences, it makes sense
for members to heed some of that advice to improve
their own health profle through healthy lifestyle
changes.
The primary goal of Healthy NABJ is to help members prevent the onset of these conditions, recognize
their symptoms and get early treatment. The better educated our members, the better the quality of critical
information they will be able to disseminate to broader audiences in a nation struggling with a plethora of health
issues.

CBS Sports Network presents 1st & Goal in the Bronx: Grambling vs. Morgan State 1968, a documentary
about the landmark match between Grambling State University and Morgan State University. This one-hour
documentary highlights the frst football game between historically black colleges played at Yankee Stadium
in New York City. The flm premiered in September of 2011, exactly 43 years after the game was played in front
of more than 60,000 fans. Through the lens of this historic game, the documentary explores the history of
black college football and the struggles confronted by teams in segregated America, as well as the political
and cultural subtext surrounding this match-up. The documentary includes interviews with players from
Grambling and Morgan State, including Shack Harris, Raymond Chester, Willie Brown, Willie Lanier, Doris
Robinson, Jerry Izenberg, and current Grambling coach Doug Williams. Thirty-one players from the game went
on to be drafted by the NFL or AFL. The game has been played every year since and offcially became the
New York Urban League Classic in 1971. Today, it takes place at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

session will show how the art of the audio cut is a foundation of multimedia reporting. Participants will learn

The United States locks up children at approximately seven times the rate of
Great Britain and 18 times the rate of France. The human and fnancial costs of our
wholesale reliance on youth incarceration have been enormous. Studies repeatedly
show that putting large numbers of young people behind bars fails to reduce future
offending, provides little if any overall beneft to public safety, wastes taxpayer
dollars, and routinely exposes young people to violence and abuse in youth
correctional facilities. In addition, children of color are incarcerated at signifcantly
higher rates than white children. Much of this happens because of ineffective
and counterproductive policies and practices in juvenile systems. But what role
do the media play? This panel will examine media portrayals of youth, particularly youth of color, and what
journalists can do to foster accurate perceptions of children and the juvenile justice system

Red Hook Houses, piecing together a boys adventures in Brooklyns biggest
public housing project. Hollywood reviewers slammed Red Hook Summer at the
Sundance Film Festival earlier this year in Park City, Utah, for painting too rosy
a picture of life in the sprawling urban complex. But Red Hook residents say Lee

SEED WINNERS
SCHOLARSHiP PROGRAM
Annually, NABJ awards deserving students interested
in pursuing a career in journalism awards of more
than $100,000 in NABJ scholarships. Scholarships
are open to any foreign or American born students,
currently attending an accredited four-year college/
university in the U.S. or those who are candidates for
graduate school.
iNTERNSHiP PROGRAM
NABJ is dedicated to expanding job opportunities
for black journalism students. NABJ annually awards
summer internships to students committed to
journalism careers. Successful candidates are offered
print, broadcast or on-line positions at selected news
organizations around the country ranging from small
Black-owned weekly newspapers to major market
dailies and broadcast outlets.
STUDENT MULTiMEDiA SHORT
COURSES
NABJ offers print and broadcast short course to
journalism students on the campuses of historically
black colleges or on college campuses with a large
African-American student enrollment.
The short courses are taught by teams of
professional journalists who provide students with
information about careers in the industry, training
in writing, reporting and editing, and tips on job
interviews and landing the frst job or internship.
SPORTS JOURNALiSM iNSTiTUTE
The Sports Journalism Institute is a nine-week
training and internship program for college students
interested in sports journalism careers. The Institute
is designed to attract talented students to print
journalism through opportunities in sports reporting
and editing and to enhance racial and gender
diversity in sports departments of newspapers
nationwide.
STUDENT CAREER MENTORiNG
PROGRAM
The NABJ Career Mentoring Program matches
students and new professionals with dedicated
members wanting to ensure that the next generation
of black journalists thrives in the newsroom.
This yearlong process will help young journalists
understand the proper protocol and the culture of
the newsroom. It will also give them the chance to
listen to people who have already gone through what
they will have to face and that can help guide them
through the proper channels for their professional
expectations.
A new mentor program will be coming soon. In
the meantime, student members are encouraged
to access the NABJ member database to reach
out to professional members. You can search for
members by area, company, and job title. We
encourage students to send introductory emails
to members stating your name, school, and what
specifc questions you have about career paths or the
journalism industry.
STUDENT PROJECTS
The NABJ Student Multimedia Project offers a
cross-platform training experience for full-time
undergraduate and graduate students who are
interested in pursuing journalism or public relations
as a career. Students work as a team alongside
experienced professionals who work for newspapers,
television, radio and online news organizations across
the country.

NABJ HiGH SCHOOL WORKSHOP
(JSHOP)
The NABJ High School Workshop (JSHOP) is an
annual high school journalism workshop held in
the host city of the National Association of Black
Journalists Convention and Career Fair. Under a
mentor-rich oversight experience, the JSHOPs goal
is to provide an enlightening, informative, hands-
on, and challenging introduction of the journalism
profession to a multi-cultural mix of New Orleans-
area high school students. By the conclusion of
the workshop, participants will also leave with a
portfolio of professionally-developed media products
(stories, blogs, photographs, video clips) and a
strong foundation with which to possibly pursue
journalism at their high schools in college and/or as a

DeWayne Wickham, a founder and past president
of NABJ is the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award
recipient, one of the organizations highest honors.
In addition to being a founding member of NABJ,
the current USA Today columnist also founded the
Association of Black Media Workers, the NABJ chapter
in Baltimore. He assisted in the creation of professional
chapters in both Greensboro, N.C., and Norfolk, Va.
Wickham also founded NABJ student chapters at Delaware State University
and North Carolina A&T State University, the latter at which he currently
serves as distinguished professor of journalism and interim chair of the
Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Wickham began his journalism career in 1973 as a weekend intern with
Baltimores Evening Sun, while majoring in journalism at the University of
Maryland. He has worked as a copy editing intern at the Richmond Times-
Dispatch; a Capitol Hill correspondent for U.S. News & World Report; a
reporter for The (Baltimore) Sun, and Washington correspondent for Black
Enterprise magazine. He later worked as a commentator for CBS News
appearing on various programs.
Wickham is also a founder of the Trotter Group, a group of African
American opinion writers who has met with presidents Clinton and Obama,

MONICA PEARSON

NABJ is proud to salute veteran broadcast journalist
Monica Pearson with its 2012 Legacy Award.
Pearson is the longest-running anchor in the Atlanta
market, working through seven presidencies and six
Georgia governors as the state nearly doubled in size.
For 37 years, she has served as an anchor at WSB-
TV (Atlanta), where she presently co-anchors the 4
pm and 6 pm newscasts. Pearson was one of the frst
African-American women ever named as a primary
evening co-anchor and anchored the 6 pm and 11 pm newscasts from 1975
until she ended her more than 30-year run as she launched the stations
4 pm show last fall. She is one of the most honored and most watched
anchors in Atlanta, and a role model for generations of journalists of all
races and creeds who have come after her.
Pearson recently announced her plans to retire, with her last day anchoring
on Wednesday, July 25. Pearson was recently honored by the Atlanta City
Council at City Hall in recognition of her upcoming retirement.
Pearson has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout her
career including 30 local and Southern Regional EMMY Awards. She was
named Broadcaster of the Year at the DiGamma Kappa Broadcast Pioneer
Award Dinner at the University of Georgia for the Henry W. Grady College
of Journalism and Mass Communications.

NABJ honors Pierre Thomas, Senior Justice
Correspondent for ABC News as the 2012 Journalist of
the Year, an award that recognizes signature reporting
from the previous year.
Thomas and his team lead ABCs coverage of
many of last years tops stories. Last January, when
Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and several others
were shot in Tucson, Ariz., Thomas was among the
frst people giving details about what happened-
emphasizing the seriousness of the incident, noting that some people
died at the scene and that Giffords had been shot at point-blank range.
He reported the facts and helped keep ABC News from reporting that the
congresswoman was dead, which some outlets did in error.
Thomas was the very frst person in the news division to tell his colleagues
that the reason the President of the United States was holding a hastily
arranged press conference on a Sunday night was that mass murdering
terrorist Osama Bin Laden had been captured and killed. Throughout
the week, Thomas broke news, including two exclusives with fascinating
specifcs on what they found in Osama Bin Ladens compound.
Thomas joined the network in November 2000 and reports for World
News with Diane Sawyer, Good Morning America, Nightline and other
ABC News programs.
He earned a Peabody, Alfred I. DuPont Award, and Emmy Awards for
his contributions to ABCs coverage of 9-11, and another Emmy for his
contributions to the networks coverage of the inauguration of President
Barack Obama. In 2011 the Houston Association of Black Journalists
honored him with its Pinnacle Award.
Earlier he served as CNN Justice Department correspondent and held
several reporting positions with the Washington Post.

ALLISSA RICHARDSON
MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITy
NABJ salutes Allissa Richardson with the 2012
Journalism Educator of the Year Award.
Richardson is an assistant professor of communication
studies and coordinator of the journalism program
at Morgan State University. She is an award-winning
journalist who empowers her students to tell stories
and speak truth to power using new media. Most
recently, the Knight Foundations Institute for
Interactive Journalism awarded her a $25,000 grant
to create a cutting-edge mobile journalism (MOJO) lab at the university.
All MOJO students are learning to report using only Apple iPhones and
iPads. Richardson has also authored two ebooks: Facebook for College
Professors and Twitter for College Professors.
Richardson has appeared on NPR twice to discuss her project. She also
created a traveling iPod storytelling workshop series for Slavery by Another
Name, a PBS documentary flm that aired nationally in February. Richardson
toured the country to offer professional-development workshops to
educators, teaching them how to use the sounds and sights from the flm to
make multimedia slideshows using only the iPod. Additionally, Richardson
has taught her unique brand of iPod journalism to students in nearly a
dozen cities in Africa. In June 2011, she traveled to South Africa to teach
10 HIV-positive girls how to report using the iPod. Later that year, she was
invited to train 40 Muslim girls in Morocco these valuable skills.
Richardsons work has appeared in O, The Oprah Magazine, the Examiner
newspaper, and on Baltimoresun.com. She earned the Weinstein-Luby
Outstanding Young Journalist Award in 2002, and the Freedom Forums
Chips Quinn Scholars award that same year.

NABJ is happy to honor Eric Burse with the 2012
Student Journalist of the Year Award.
Burse is a student at the University of Southern
Californias (USC) Annenberg School for
Communication and Journalism, studying broadcast
and digital journalism and political science.
Burse has served on the staff of USCs Daily Trojan as
a photographer and he eventually moved to the role
of entertainment beat reporter establishing J. Erics
Entertainment Buzz Report, which ran twice weekly. He also worked at
USCs Annenberg TV News station as a studio technician, assignment desk
editor and, most recently, as an on-air multimedia journalist. In November
2011, Eric covered the trial and conviction of Michael Jacksons doctor
Conrad Murray at the L.A. Superior Courthouse and the opening of the
Martin King memorial on the National Mall in Washington D.C.
Burse is an active member and a scholarship recipient from the National
Association of Black Journalists. He has participated in the student projects
workshop at the NABJ national convention twice. He is also active in the
Black Journalists Association of Southern California. He interned at CNBCs
Los Angeles bureau in 2011 and currently interns at the NBC Burbank
bureau where he gains experience with the Today Show, Nightly News with
Brian Williams and Dateline.

NABJ honors the Los Angeles Times Gerrick Kennedy
as this years Emerging Journalist of the Year Award
recipient.
A NABJ Baby, Kennedy is now an award-winning
journalist and blogger. He began at the Los Angeles
Times in 2009 as an intern and contributed to both
the metro and online entertainment teams as part of
the papers Metpro training program. He is currently
a music reporter for the paper where he covers pop,
R&B/soul and hip-hop. He has interviewed some of musics biggest stars
including Sean Diddy Combs, Brandy, Monica, Drake, Mary J. Blige, Kelly
Clarkson, Usher, Rodney Jerkins, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne. Kennedy also
contributed greatly to the
An Ohio native, he earned a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from The
Ohio State University, where he served as the editor, managing editor and
Arts & Life editor of The Lantern, OSUs student newspaper. Kennedy was
also a founding member of the campus chapter of the National Association
of Black Journalists.
His prior honors include the Joseph S. Meyers award in journalism in 2008
and the Robert F. Wolfe journalism merit award in 2009. In addition, he
won best college featuring writing by the Ohio Society of Professional
Journalists in 2009 for his reporting on efforts in New Orleans to rebuild the
citys education system following Hurricane Katrina.

NABJ Honors Albert Knighten with its 2012 Community
Service Award.
Knighten is a 20-year retired U.S. Navy air traffc
controller, and a native of Fort Myers, Fla. While in the
military, he would use his leave time to approach local
radio stations managers in Fort Myers about ways to
create programs for the black community. Knighten
even went to the Federal Communications Commission
(FCC) offces to seek information about starting a
black-oriented community radio station.
Knighten 44, vowed to himself and to the Fort Myers community that
if there wasnt a local radio station catering to the mostly black Dunbar
Community in Fort Myers by the time he retired from the Navy that he
would start one himself. In 2005, he made good on his promise by starting
the Dunbar Community Radio (DCR) at 107.5 FM, a 100-watt station with a
10-mile radius.
The station operated under the radar of the mainstream community until a
controversial discussion led to a county code enforcement. The station was
operating without a license and the police and the FCC arrested Knighten
and seized his equipment in December 2011, charging him with operating
a station without a license. All charges against him were resolved in early
2012. Knighten hopes to get back on air in the near future and plans to
petition the have his equipment returned.
Congress passed the Local Community Act of 2010, which cleared the way
for the expansion of low-power, non-commercial FM radio stations confned
to small communities and rural areas, with a transmitter power limited to
100 watts reaching three to fve miles.
The FCC will be issuing licenses for community radio stations beginning in
the fall of 2012. Knighten will apply for an FCC license to get back on the
airwaves so he can continue to serve his community.

NABJ honors TV Ones groundbreaking original
series,Find Our Missing, with its annual Best Practices
Award.
The Best Practices Award is given to a news
organization for exemplary work in covering issues
of great signifcance to the black community or the
African Diaspora. Finding Our Missing fts the bill.
Hosted by S. Epatha Merkerson, the show is an hour-
long, docu-drama series that puts names and faces to
people of color -- young and old -- who have disappeared without a trace.
Each riveting episode features a dramatic and emotional tale that places
the viewer within the lives of the missing person, along with refecting the
pain of their loved ones, while confronting dead ends at every turn.
From the moment of their disappearance, the story back tracks to learn
about the missing person from the people who knew them best who they
were, what made them tick and how they touched those around them. With
each breaks cliffhanger and each new twist unearthed, viewers will be more
than just engrossed in the story being told; they will want to help solve the
case.
Though blacks comprise only 14 percent of the total U.S. population, they
account for nearly 40 percent of all reported missing persons cases.
At the end of each episode Merkerson signs off by saying, Be safe and
keep an eye out, a reminder to be aware, be responsible, and be involved in
being part of the solution.
NABJ salutes TV One for this bold series and for venturing to tell the stories
that would otherwise go untold.

NABJ salutes Janet Roll, Executive Vice President and Chief
Marketing Offcer for CNN Worldwide, as its 2012 Pat Tobin
Media Professional Award Recipient. The award recognizes a
public relations, advertising, or marketing professional that
has had a distinctive impact in the media realm, which has
resulted in positive media coverage of the black community,
thus improving the media landscape.
Roll oversees the positioning and promotion of CNNs
multiple networks and services, including CNN, CNN.com,
CNN International, HLN, CNN.com/Live, CNN Mobile and all
other CNN services.
She joined CNN in April 2011 from BET Networks, where as executive vice president
and chief marketing offcer she led brand strategy and marketing efforts, including
on-air promotions, off-channel and digital marketing, affliate and trade marketing.
In her fnal months as chief marketing offcer of BET, Roll helped the network
make cable history with the premiere of the networks history-making scripted
series, The Game, the highest-rated original sitcom in cable history.
Additionally, Roll directed a redesign of the BET network on air, and
comprehensive, multi-platform marketing campaigns for the brands signature
programs, including, the BET
Honors and the BET Awards, for which BET received multiple Promax/BDA Awards.
Advertising Age magazine named her one of 10 Who Made Their Mark in 2010 for
her noteworthy brand development work at BET.
Before joining BET Networks, Roll worked at AOL as Vice President and General
Manger of AOL Black Voices and AOL Womens and Lifestyle Programming from
2005-2007. In this role, she oversaw editorial programming for AOL Black Voices
and the 10 websites in the lifestyle category.
From 2000-2005, Roll worked at MTV Networks as the vice president of
programming enterprises and business development for VH1 and CMT. She began
her business career at HBO, where she spent nearly 10 years, eventually rising to
Director of Marketing and New Media for HBO Home Video.

ATLANTA ASSOCiATiON OF BLACK JOURNALiSTS
AABJ had a banner year in 2011. Led by President Tenisha Bell, the chapter recently celebrated
its 35th anniversary in grand style. In September, dignitaries and about 200 guests helped to
celebrate the chapters anniversary and to recognize AABJs contributions to the community.
Atlantas City council presented the chapter with a proclamation from the city commemorating its
anniversary. Its the highest honor the city can offer an organization.
Not only did AABJ offer the programming needed for its members, but it awarded $10,000 in
college scholarships to three future black journalists. It also discussed the condition of education
in the black community and discussed the importance of mentoring. The chapter makes time to
publish a quality monthly newsletter called The Byline. The newsletter highlights whats going on
in the chapter and around Atlanta.
HAMPTON ROADS BLACK MEDiA PROFESSiONALS
HRBMP members are setting an example for other chapters to follow. Led by President Cheryl
Ross, the associations programming and initiatives in 2011 far exceeded that of the chapters work
in previous years. HRBMP held two media-related town halls that attracted large African-American
audiences, awarded six scholarships to college students and ventured into area schools to inspire
children to pursue media careers. The programming represents a total turnaround for the chapter,
which had practically ceased operations until two years ago.

HOWARD UNiVERSiTY ASSOCiATiON OF BLACK JOURNALiSTS
Under President Denise Sawyer, HUABJ has implemented innovative methods for attracting new
members and keeping them engaged. The chapter launched HUABJ radio, HUABJ tv and HUABJ
video, and a multiplatform newsletter that doubles as a training ground for students to practice
their writing, editing and production skills.
The chapter leveraged its relationships with professional journalists through two new initiatives - a
mentoring program and mini-workshops that send students into the feld with working journalists.
For aspiring sportswriters, the chapter established agreements with Comcast SportsNet, ESPN
and Howard Universitys Athletic Department that allow students to practice game coverage,
participate in reporting boot camps and shadow professional beat writers.
HUABJ also created a multimedia archive for chapter events, lectures and workshops. The HUABJ
Library, as it is called, provides journalism tips at the click of a mouse.
THE UNiVERSiTY OF GEORGiA CHAPTER OF NABJ
Led by President Crissinda Ponder, UGA-NABJ has sponsored relevant and diverse workshops to
help its members prepare for graduation, including: A Competitive Journalists Guide, Landing a
Job in Sports Journalism and Scoring Your Dream Internship.
These workshops emphasized what NABJ is all about - preparing members to thrive in the
journalism industry. The chapter called upon seasoned journalists to help inspire students to
achieve their future career goals. The Chapter also volunteered with after-school programs,
donated school supplies, tutored and assisted the American Red Cross.
UNiVERSiTY OF NORTH CAROLiNA AT CHAPEL HiLL
Under the leadership of President Jasmine Nesi, CABJ has had a productive year. The chapter
celebrated its 20th anniversary and offered unique programming to keep members engaged and
future members informed. The Chapter kicked off 2011 with CNNs Soledad OBrien as its keynote
speaker for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. The chapter also had a screening of the
series Black in America.
During the year, the chapter also held true to the mission of NABJ. It gave high school students
a crash course in the world of journalism. Students came to the UNC campus and learned
about photography, social media, broadcasting and public relations. In 2011, the chapter also
had workshops for its members on how to network, a spelling and grammar workshop, and on tips
to market themselves. The chapter also held a panel discussion on social media and reinvention.
The session was timely as many journalists today are sharpening their skills so they can be
competitive and marketable. The chapter also found time to volunteer in elementary and middle
schools to spark students interest in journalism.
