Thousands enjoy
glorious spectacle
YESTERDAYS annual Twelfth
of July parades brought thou-
sands of Orange Order members
and supporters on to city streets
and country roads in a glorious
spectacle of colour and music.
Parade organisers right across
the Province reported larger
numbers than ever turning out to
enjoy the carnival atmosphere.
Orange Order offcials put the
bumper crowds down to an un-
expected upturn in the previous-
ly miserable weather, but also a
renewed interest in Protestant
culture and heritage.
This years celebrations have
taken place during the cente-
nary of the Ulster Covenant and
as Northern Ireland prepares to
mark other historically impor-
tant events. The largest of the
Orange demonstrations was in
Belfast, with Enniskillen, Car-
rickfergus and Ballynahinch the
fagship venues for 2012.
By contrast, but equally en-
joyed by all who lined the pic-
turesque streets of Broughshane
in Co Antrim, the Braid district
hosted the smallest of the pa-
rades.
All venues, large and small, en-
tertained Northern Ireland exiles
and visitors from as far away as
Australia, Canada and the US.
