Countdown is Shrinking Government on for Dearborn Homecoming

SPECIAL REPORT
DEARBORN The countdown is on until this years Homecoming festivities begin at Ford Field Park in Dearborn. The festival kicks off Friday with plenty of family fun. The annual event, which takes place Friday through Sunday, is made possible, in part, by presenting sponsor Oakwood Healthcare. As always, it will feature fireworks Saturday and Sunday. Saturdays fireworks sponsor is Kenwal Steel Corp. The festival is also known for its entertainment, with the headline act on Saturday being the band, WAR. There also is music on three stages throughout the weekend. This year, the city is joining again with the nonprofit Dearborn Community Fund to organize the festival, which is a major fundraiser for more than two dozen Dearborn-based service clubs and cultural and charity groups.

Chairman casts deciding vote to remove Said Deep

By Joe Slezak
Press & Guide Newspapers

DEARBORN Just one no vote was cast at the City Council meeting July 24, but it was enough to block a re-appointment to the City Plan Commission. With Councilmen Brian ODonnell and Mark Shooshanian absent, and Councilwoman Suzanne Sareini leaving early because she was ill, anything approved by the council had to be by a unanimous vote because four votes are needed to approve anything. The no vote came from Council Chairman Tom Tafelski on the re-appointment of Said Deep to the City Plan Commission, making it 3-1. Deeps term would have ended June 30, 2015. Mayor Jack OReilly asked Tafelski to table the vote to the next meeting, which will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, but Tafelski instead called for a roll-call vote. Councilmen Robert Abraham and David Bazzy and Councilwoman Nancy Hubbard

voted yes. Tafelski was unavailable for comment Monday and Tuesday. If this had gone before the entire council, as the mayor requested, we wouldnt be having this conversation, Deep wrote in an email after the vote. Tafelski is being disingenuous with comments that this wasnt personal. He had every opportunity to simply table the vote until the entire council was present at another meeting. But thats politics in Dearborn. OReilly said in published reports that there was a concern that Deep had written on his blog, deepsaidwhat.com, about the Goodwill Industries store that was being considered for downtown west Dearborn when the issue was before the commission. OReilly said he asked Deep not to blog about matters before the commission if he were re-appointed, and Deep agreed. OReilly told the council about the agreement during the Committee of the Whole study session July 19.
