MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM
The muscular system and the skeletal system are so connected that sometimes they are combined and called the musculoskeletal system. The skeletal system is connected with the muscular system because the skeletal muscles help move the bones in your body. As shown in the picture on the next slide, the bones are connected and they work together.

TENDON
Tendons are a strong strand of exible tissue that grows into the bone. It forms a strong bond that is very difcult to break.

As you can see, the tendon is connected to the bone so that the muscles have something to pull.

ACHILLES TENDON The achilles is the biggest and

strongest tendon in the body. It connects the calf muscle to the bone in your heel. This connection allows you to walk, jump and run.....unless it tears apart.

IF A MUSCLE WAS INJURED

IF A MUSCLE WAS INJURED

1. It would be harder to move that body part, but not impossible because joints have many muscles that are responsible for moving it. 2. Blood ow to the muscle would bring nutrients to help repair it and also take away dead cells.

TORN TENDON? WHAT NOW?

If a tendon is torn, it wont be able to pull on the bone its attached to so that part of your skeleton cant move. If you only tear it part way, you will have to get a cast. If it tears completely, you will have to get surgery to x it. While it heals you wont be able to move that body part. If the tendon is in your leg you might need to walk on crutches. Tendons don't have very much blood supply so they take a long time to heal.

WHAT DOES BLOOD HAVE TO DO WITH YOUR BONES?

Blood cells are made inside your bones. The cells only live a couple months, so your bones are constantly making new ones. Many blood vessels go in and out of the bones. They bring nutrients and oxygen and take out waste and the new blood cells. The bones need blood ow in order to grow and be repaired.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU BREAK A BONE?

When a bone breaks, some of the blood vessels in the bone also get damaged. This makes some of the bone cells die. To heal the bone, new blood vessels grow to bring in cells to help repair, remove dead cells and regrow new bone. It takes more than a month to heal and you cant use that part of your body during that time.
