Annotated Bibliography Alharithy, Ruaa. Adolescents Acne: Scarring Inside Out!

Journal of the Saudi Society of Dermatology & Dermatologic Surgery 15.2 (2011): 43. Supplemental Index. Web. 19 Sept. 2012. This source is a directly informative resource about what acne is and how it especially affects adolescents. It gives background on acne vulgaris, a disease it states to be very common and is seen most often in adolescents. It is believed to not only cause physical complications on a persons face and even other parts of their body including their back, chest, and arms, but also to be a factor in the mental health of a person dealing with acne. This article provides two important objectives about acne, the first being that the psychological aspect of acne that goes hand in hand with the physical one should be more understood by the public. The second objective is learning who is most at risk, and how to interfere so that it is possible to prevent acne in a person. This source provides data and experiments for supporting facts. This source is credible because it is written by a society specifically for dermatology, which means there are multiple people researching and taking part in creating the overall journal, even though this specific article is written by one person. It probably is being revised and overlooked by everyone involved. This information is relevant and will be helpful to my paper because it actually discusses the scientific data and background on acne so I can fully understand it, as well as hitting on social and mental aspects of the effects of acne, which is a big part of where I wanted to go with this paper. McLeod, Renee P. Lumps, Bumps, and Things That Go Itch in Your Office! The Journal of School Nursing 20.4 (2004): 245-246. PsycINFO. Web. 19 Sept. 2012. This is also an article from an academic journal, and is written by a former nurse at a school to give her view on how acne is treated. The article starts out by discussing other types of skin diseases by providing an actual case study of a girl who arrives at the nurses office complaining of different skin problems. This case study provides detail of the physical findings on the girls body and what it is. Most specifically, it labels and diagnoses the disease the child is thought to have. Once diagnosed, it details how the child gets that skin disease, which for acne is caused by a couple of factors in this case study. One of the most common seems to be hormones. This source also includes pictures of some of the other common skin diseases, so it has strong visual aids. This source is credible because it is written by a nurse who is certified in the aspect that she can identify correctly common health problems such as acne. Also, the article is her personal experience so it is true facts, data, and pictures of what she actually saw. This is all relevant to my paper and will help me write it because its a firsthand experience that I could refer to, possibly as a quote of what the acne looked like to her as a nurse. Saxe, Norma, Susan Jessop, and Gail Todd. Handbook of Dermatology for Primary Care: A Practical Guide to Diagnosis. Cape Town: Oxford University Press Southern Africa, 2007. Print. This source is an actual book, but more specifically a handbook or manual type of book that discusses a vast number of skin diseases and how to diagnose them correctly. This handbook is a reliable and credible source because it isnt too old, but was published in 2007 so I can use

the information in it without it being outdated and wrong. It also is published as a handbook to dermatology, which means it wasnt only written collaboratively by its three authors, but it must be information they learned from other sources which are in their bibliography, but also it must be reviewed to be correct for it to be published as a handbook or manual to dermatology. This book is useful to my paper because it breaks down different skin diseases in the book so that acne has its own section that discusses all aspects of acne, from diagnosing to cures or whatever it may be and I can use all of that information in my paper as I choose. Acne: The Emotional Impact. WebMD. WebMD, n.d. Web. 13 Oct. 2012. <http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/acne/acne-care-11/emotional>. This is an internet source which discusses how to cope with acne and a persons care plan for it. It focuses on the emotional impact of acne and how just a simple zit or pimple can affect a persons mindset. It discusses how this is especially influential on teenagers, who are already insecure as it is and struggle when faced with anything that could potentially damage their appearance. Having acne isnt just a temporary physical impediment, but can control someones mental state while having acne and even a long time after it fades or heals. This article gives a firsthand experience of acne when a woman who struggled with acne her whole life is interviewed. This article is credible because it is written on WebMD, which is a published site that covers a variety of medical problems and their treatments. It often has quotes and advice directly from doctors to show that is credible and correct information. This is useful to my paper because it discusses the psychological side of acne and gives a primary example of someone who struggled with acne and the emotions and mentality they experienced. Krauss Dermatology. Treatment of teen Acne. N.p., n.d. Web. 13 Oct. 2012. <http://www.kraussderm.com/medical-dermatology/the-a-word-treatment-of-teen-acne>. This source is an internet site that is created by a group of dermatologists, specifically Dr. Krauss and her colleagues, that discusses treatment for teenage acne. It focuses a lot on the biology of acne and how teenagers get acne and where on their faces and bodies. It says that dermatologists, as opposed to a regular doctor who would brush off moderate to mild acne, will provide different types of treatment that are unique to that persons type of acne. The site discusses different types of treatment that include washes, creams, lotions, face wipes, etc. Each treatment works in its own way at separate speeds so it is important that a patient and the dermatologist discuss the best and safest method that will work most efficiently. This source is credible because it is created by a team of dermatologists, which means they are professionals and the information is accurate and reliable. This will be useful to my paper because it supplies different treatments I can discuss for the physical aspect of acne so that acne can be controlled or eliminated completely. People like Me Your Stories about Life with Acne. Stories from People with Acne about Experiences of Life. N.p., n.d. Web. 13 Oct. 2012. <http://www.talkacne.com/webdocs/yourlives.php>.

This source is a blog type of site, which allows people to post anything they would like to write about their experiences with acne and anything theyve had to deal with regarding the skin disease. Here, I can find personal stories and a different view on acne, mostly a psychological side that people would like to talk about if they had bad experiences because of insecurities and bad self-esteem. This would be very useful to my paper because it allows me to not just generalize about the mental problems acne causes or just discuss the physical side of it, but to give actual examples of how people feel and suffer when they have acne. This would give my readers the ability to sympathize with quotes from this site so they know this is real and people truly feel this bad because of acne. This source is credible because it is a variety of people posting, all of which can comment on each others posts and discuss the topic so if one person isnt exactly telling the truth, there is always a group of people discussing the topic correcting them or disagreeing with the view they had. This site gives me multiple people to refer to in my essay.
