Cabernet Sauvignon
MNAgE tRoiS
Spice it up with Mnage Trois
English poet William Cowper noted that Varietys the very spice of life, that gives it all its flavor. Local success story Mnage Trois winery agrees. When the brand launched as a blended wine, it resonated with the consumer in a way nobody expected. Mnage Trois is currently the #1 Red Blend and the #1 Red Wine, and is credited as helping pioneer the now-exploding red blend category. At a $10 price point with an elegant package, a conversational name, and an exciting new flavor profile consumers fell in love. So whats new for Mnage Trois? We know our consumers are adventurous and always seeking new experiences, noted Tim Peters, Marketing Director of Mnage Trois wines. So weve added a few new varietals to keep them satisfied. With Mnage Trois, loyal consumers cant get enough of a good thing and have been asking for more. As a result, the portfolio now boasts eight varietals including three provocative new wines Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio. Each Mnage Trois wine has its own distinct taste in addition to its very own attitude. Mnage Trois wines are made in the heart of Napa Valley wine country, so you can visit the tasting room, try the wines, and if you are really lucky, maybe even take one (or three) home with you. Located on Highway 29, just north of Yountville, guests are invited to come enjoy the beautiful grounds and bring a picnic lunch.
The Mnage Trois Cabernet Sauvignon blends grapes from three outstanding California growing regions: Sonoma, Lake and Napa counties. It boasts lush, dark berry flavors, and exquisite silky tannins. Wine Attitude: Here at Mnage Trois, we believe in living a rich fantasy life. The richer, the better, in fact! In our favorite saucy scenario, were being seduced by royalty, helpless to resist the temptations afforded by prestige and power. Intrigued? We recommend you enjoy a regal romp of your own with the emperor of grapes, the King of Reds: Cabernet Sauvignon. Mnage Trois traces its lineage to prestigious vineyards in three of Californias premier growing regions where grapes develop majestic characteristics and distinction. So have a fling with the King! One sip, and youll understand the true meaning of a royal flush.
pinot grigio
The Pinot Grigio erupts with zesty tropical fruit aromas, vivid fruit flavors balanced by mouth-watering acidity. To preserve the fresh, bright fruit flavors and zippy aromas, winemakers cold-ferment the wine in stainless steel tanks. Wine Attitude: At the risk of sounding suggestive, we dare you to indulge in a little skinny dipping. Thats right, were asking you to experience the thrill of the naked grape in a glass of our lively Pinot Grigio. With nothing to hide behind, this gorgeous single-varietal wine bares all with bright fruit flavors and an exuberant acidity that makes you want to go streaking through the vines. Though were technically breaking the rules of Mnage Trois by giving all our love to just one grape, we think youll agree that in this case, one sometimes is better than three. (Gasp! Were not becoming monogamous, are we?)

MERRYVALE VINEYARDS
Rich in history as it embraces the future
BY MIKE HYLAND
MERRYVALE VINEYARDS Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (last tasting being served at 6 p.m.) 1000 Main Street, Saint Helena CA 94574 (707) 963-7777 | www.merryvale.com
One of the most unique wine tasting rooms in the Napa Valley that is also steeped in history is the beautiful Merryvale Vineyards in St. Helena. The winemaking facility was the first one to be built in the Napa Valley following the repeal of Prohibition in 1933. When the building was completed, many of the valleys grape growers used the facility as a shipping point for bulk wine they were sending back east. Eventually, the Christian Brothers bought the building and installed 2200-gallonoak casks to age brandy. Many of the casks have survived over the years and presently line the stone walls of Merryvales Cask Room, a most impressive event space that is used for wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, corporate events and the like. Often cited as the Napa Valleys most enchanting setting for special events, this unique setting is like a step back in time with long banquet tables situated between two stories of 130-year-old casks. Merryvale was founded in 1983 and purchased in 1996 by Jack Schlatter, who along with his son Ren, are the principals of the winery. The Schlatters are dedicated to both passionate winemaking and sustainable farming. For almost three decades, Merryvale has been turning exceptional Napa Valley grapes into world-class wine including the rich, powerful Cabernet Sauvignon and Carneros Chardonnay, as well as the iconic Bordeaux-style red blend, Profile. While the vineyards throughout Sonoma County might be dormant all winter, Wine Road shakes the cold weather blues with its annual Winter Wineland event celebrating wine on Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20. In its 21st year, Winter Wineland invites guests to create their own journey through wine country discovering new wines, speaking with winemakers, sample library wines, new releases and even some barrel sample and learning about vineyard practices throughout the Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River Valleys. It also honors the art and history of winemaking, giving guests behindthe-scenes access to the people, practices and wines that make Wine Road one of the most exciting wine country destinations in California. Tickets include wine tastings at all participating wineries, including some that are not usually open to the public. Currently there are more than 140 winery members of the Wine Road in Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River Valleys in Northwest Sonoma County. The Wine Road is a travel resource for those looking to visit the region, which is famous for its renowned wine producers and cuisine, scenic beauty and wine country lifestyle. The association hosts three celebrated wine events throughout the year, Winter Wineland in January; Barrel Tasting in March; and A Wine and Food Affair in November. Made up of 190 vintners and 50+ lodgings throughout the Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River valleys in Sonoma County, something is always going on along the Wine Road. Affairs of the Vine Wine Shootouts ... Distinctly Different Wine Competitions
11th Annual pinot Noir Shootout & 7th Cabernet Shootout are under Way
Distinctly different wine competitions, Affairs of the Vine Wine Shootouts are comprehensive and focused tastings of varietal wines. The Pinot Noir Shootout, celebrating its 11th year, focuses on Pinot Noir, Blanc de Noirs and other Pinot Noir-based sparkling wines. The Cabernet Shootout is concentrating on Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Blends for the 7th time. The Pinot Noir and Cabernet Shootout boast incredibly diverse tasting panels comprised of more than 70 wine industry professionals from varying disciplines. The wines submitted to the competitions are tasted over a threemonth period. Just 32 wines are tasted per day in the prelims and finals, allowing the judges to be completely immersed, focused and fair to the wines. Palate fatigue is not a factor in the tastings. Wines are tasted completely blind without reference to appellation, vintage or price. Each wine is judged and reviewed on its own merit. All wines are tasted by at least two tasting panels before the finals. The educational and engaging, consumer-oriented, follow-up events, The Pinot Noir Summit (March 2, 2013), The Cabernet Shootout Challenge (January 26, 2013) and Romancing the Rhones (July 13, 2013) allow consumers to taste the top wines and pit their palates against the professional judging panel. The attendees are involved in the process of judging the wines from their perspective: a most memorable and influential experience. For more information, go to affairsofthevine.com.

The aerial tram ride to the top of Sterling Vineyards just never gets old. In fact, if theres one thing to do every visit to Napa Valley its ride the Sterling tram, because every time it seems brand new. During this, the wintery time of year, youll find nearly bare vines set against a lush green backdrop of evergreens and cover crops. Early in the day the low hanging fog frames the valley and creates the perfect lighting for memorable photos; later most days the fog yields to bright sunlight and enhanced visibility up and down the valley. Theres lots of other newness afoot at the top of the hill, too, where the newly upgraded self-guided winery tour provides visitors an opportunity to set their own pace as they learn about Sterlings vineyard and winery practices. Once you hop off the tram, youll start off at the covered outdoor tasting station on the mezzanine level to enjoy the first few samples of wine and get a quick primer on the self-guided tour. When the winery was built in 1971, winery founder Peter Newton styled the Mediterranean white stucco building after structures on the Greek island of Mykonos, where he had once lived. The winery was designed to be visitorcentered, with public viewing at every critical juncture of wine production. This visitor-friendly design makes Sterling a great place to take a tour, especially one that is self-paced so the curious can linger over the crushpad or beside the barrel room as long as they like. The winery recently added video presentations at each tour stop, with in-depth information about each step of the winemaking process. After the self-guided tour, its on to the visitor center, where the doting and

well-informed Sterling staff will seat you and serve you tableside and maybe even by the roaring fireplace. Upgrade to the VIP tasting and youll have the opportunity to sample some of the wonderful single-vineyard and reserve wines Sterling is best known for, such as the Three Palms Merlot and Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. On clear days, Sterling hosts guests on the upper deck, where youll have a panoramic view and a nearly birds eye view of Three Palms vineyard just to the south and east of the winery. Its not unusual for a winters day in Napa Valley to be in the 60s and sunny, fine weather to enjoy a tasting on the deck. The winery is also proudly showcasing the new 2009 Platinum, the first wine to come out of Sterlings revamped reserve program. At 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a big delicious wine with lovely dark fruit balanced by notes of toasty oak and mocha. Sterling has an incredibly loyal following among sweet wine fans. The perennially favored Malvasia Bianca has become so popular at Sterling that they now have a Malvasia Bianca Wine Club, with members receiving two bottles of this heady elixir monthly. Other sweets on the wine list include the luscious Muscat and the aromatically captivating late harvest Riesling. General admission at Sterling Vineyards is just $25, including aerial tram, self-guided tour and tasting of five wines. Upgrade to the VIP tasting for an additional $10. Visitors can book tram tickets in advance online at www.sterlingvineyards.com.

CHIEF CONCIERGE THE FAIRMONT SONOMA MISSION INN & SPA
Scott Chappell
CONCIERGE/INNKEEPER, CANDLELIGHT INN
WCtW: Describe the perfect day in wine country. tW: A perfect day in Sonoma starts with a
delicious breakfast at the Sonoma Golf Club, affiliated with The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. Sit back and enjoy their signature lemon cottage cheese pancakes, while overlooking the scenic golf course and sipping your mimosa. Afterward, head over to Robert Hunter Winery for their unique garden tour at their private estate. I am fond of their sparkling and Pinot Noir. Then its off to the VJB Vineyards & Cellars to taste their wonderful Italian varietals and for a little lunch from their Mercado. They are serving delicious grilled paninis and pizzas from their brick oven, and have great picnic tables in the patio of their brand new Villagio. After a short drive across the valley, you will arrive at Repris, Sonomas newest and most exciting winery (open by appointment only). Their friendly crew tours you through their facility and into their enormous 18,000-squarefoot caves for barrel tasting. Then they load you into an ATV and whisk you through the vineyards to the top of the mountain. Youre now looking down at the entire valley with views spanning all the way to San Francisco. What a jaw dropping view! Now for a little pampering, Fairmonts Willow Stream Spa, offers a wide array treatments to sooth your stress away. Start with a soak in the hot spring pools which are filled from a natural spring. Your Provider will come for you for your hot stone massage. Now if you are not completely mush, its time for the Chefs tasting menu with wine pairing in Sant, the resorts signature fine dining restaurant.
WCtW: If you were to visit just one winery, which would you choose and why? LAD: If I could visit only one, I would visit Spring Mountain Winery, because it is so breathtakingly beautiful, and the wines are so incredible. WCtW: What winery do you think has the best over-the-top experience to offer visitors? LAD: I think that Far Niente is rather over-thetop; its place within the history of Napa Valley winemaking is fascinating, the building is gorgeous, the grounds are stunning and to see the antique car collection is really quite special. WCtW: Where do you send guests that want to learn about wine? LAD: If they are newcomers to the world of wine I might send them to Beringer for one of the educational tastings with Dean, who is so fabulous. He makes it all so accessible, easy and enjoyable. If my guests are budding collectors, I might send them to Shafer, where they do a more formal educational tasting. WCtW: Where would you take friends to learn about/taste organic wines? LAD: I think Grgich Hills is an excellent example of organic wines that are absolutely superb. I like their whites as much as their reds. WCtW: Who has your favorite cave tour? LAD: My favorite cave/cellar tour is at Del Dotto winery; but I may be influenced by their Cab Franc. WCtW: What areas and/or wineries would you recommend that are not part of the popular wine country? LAD: I think that the Glen Ellen area is still a bit of a hidden gem, its so rural and peaceful, and beautiful.
WCtW: If you were to visit just one winery, which would you choose and why? SC: Visit Ceago Winery in Nice (Clear Lake) for tasting and educational cheese/wine pairing. The winery is owned by a member of the Fetzer family, and is surronded by vineyards and lavender fields. WCtW: Describe the perfect day in wine country. SC: Begin with a latte and pastry at Model Bakery (Napa), and then peruse the wonderful shops and food choices at Oxbow Market. Use a limo service such as Napatac to Caldwell for wine tasting and a great view. Then on to Chappellet winery for tasting and a surrounding view of the lakes and mountains. Stop at Luna Market in Rutherford for a rest. Cap off the day with dinner on the Wine Train (dome car), then a nightcap at Bistro Don Giovanni to hang with locals and winemakers. WCtW: What winery do you think has the best over-the-top experience to offer visitors? SC: Palmaz Vineyards, it is a precise like clockwork vertical winery in the hill. It has over the top visuals, wine and owners! WCtW: Where do you send guests that want to learn about wine? SC: Robert Mondavi Winery with a tour by Richard Miami. WCtW: Where would you take friends to learn about and taste organic wines? SC: Frogs Leap (Rutherford) Theres a large garden, fruit trees, along with lots of vines. The staff is very knowledgable and friendly, too. WCtW: What areas would you recommend that is not part of the popular wine country? SC: You have to visit Coombsville (Napa) for visiting small wineries with great wines.
Remember: Please sip responsibly! Plan to taste at no more than three wineries based on these recommendations.

Get your new year off to a great start with a visit to Grgich Hills, a winery ramping up for Winemaker/Proprietor Miljenko Mike Grgichs 90th birthday celebration by offering his signature Unforgettable Tour and Tasting Experience. Grgich himself designed this tour to help visitors discover the unforgettable story of the winery and legendary winemaker, who in 2008 was inducted into the Vintners Hall of Fame. Tour participants start out in front of the winery in the educational vineyard to learn about the winerys commitment to natural, organic winegrowing and sustainability. With 366 acres of vines spread across five estate vineyards ranging from Calistoga to Yountville and south to Carneros and American Canyon, Grgich Hills has carefully chosen the varietals best-suited for each vineyards terroir. Youll see a selection of these vines in the education vineyard and learn about the winerys organic farming practices. Back in the winery, youll begin your tasting with Chardonnay, the varietal that made Mike Grgich an international wine hero in 1976 when he was winemaker at Chateau Montelena. It was, of course, at the historic Paris Tasting that year that the Chateau Montelena Chardonnay was named best white wine in the world by a panel of eminent French wine judges. With wine sample in hand, the Unforgettable Tour winds its way back into the winerys historic cellar where youll learn about the winemaking process from the crushpad, through fermentation and barrel aging. On Friday afternoons, the tour includes some sampling straight out of the barrel as well. Finally, youll end up back in the tasting room, where you can check out the winerys solar power meter. In 2006, Grgich Hills transitioned to solar power, and now the 13,000-square-feet of rooftop solar panels generate almost 100% of the winerys electrical needs. The current lineup of wines in the tasting room includes the Chardonnay as well as Fum Blanc, Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Often the winery also has some special selections open for tasting, such as the Carneros Chardonnay and the Yountville Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, plus the late-harvest Violetta for the sweet wine aficionado. In addition to the Grgich Hills wines, the tasting room also sells two wines from Grgic Vina, a winery in Croatia that Mike Grgich started in 1996. Take home a bottle of the red Plavac Mali (related to ancestral Zinfandel) and the white Poip for a truly unique gift or collectors item. Set aside about 90 minutes for an Unforgettable Tour, offered by appointment daily at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. daily. To see the full slate of hospitality experiences offered at Grgich Hills, visit www.grgich.com. And...stay tuned for more fun in store at Grgich Hills to help Mike Grgich celebrate his 90th birthday on April 1!

LA CREMA WiNERY
High-Style Tasting Room Opens
La Crema opened the doors of its expanded tasting room, located just steps off the famed Healdsburg Plaza, on Saturday, December 8. Double the size of the original footprint, the interior look and feel was created by acclaimed home goods designer Marc Blackwell, who drew inspiration from the textures and colors of La Crema wines and vineyards. A focal point of the private wine club room is an expansive, 10-foot-long table made from a slab of 300-year-old Bobinga wood its the perfect spot to enjoy one of the new wine and cheese offerings. Whether making wines or enjoying them, we believe a strong sense of place is important, said Elizabeth Grant-Douglas, winemaker, La Crema. Filled with art, light, varied textures and rich color, the new space enhances the tasting experience. Plus, the larger area means we can present expanded tasting menus, new cheese selections and accommodate bigger groups. When I entertain at home, I want my guests to have a fantastic experience and come away with a strong visual impression, said designer Marc Blackwell. I see the new tasting room as La Cremas opportunity to do the same share the stunning textural, visual and natural world of the winery. Seasonal displays will also highlight the work of local artists. Through Spring 2013, visitors can view vibrant abstract paintings from Mandy Bankson of Santa Rosa. La Crema is widely loved for handcrafted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. For more than 30 years, the family-owned and operated winery has focused exclusively on Californias cool climate coastal appellations, where ocean winds and fog allow grapes to ripen slowly on the vine. Winemaker Elizabeth Grant-Douglas continues to use boutique techniques to produce distinctively balanced and elegant wines. A leader in sustainable vineyard and winery practices, La Crema combines traditional farming methods with new technologies to conserve water, minimize energy use and naturally reduce pests. To learn more, visit www.LaCrema.com or follow them on Facebook (www.facebook.com/LaCremaWinery) or Twitter (@LaCremaWines).

Artist Maeve Croghan Returns to the Charles Creek Vineyard Tasting Room & Gallery
An exhibition of the new works by Northern California Expressionist Nature Painter Maeve Croghan is now on display at the Charles Creek Vineyard Tasting Room and Gallery in downtown Sonoma. Interpretations of natural landscapes and vineyard scenes are the dominant themes. The show will run through January 31st, 2013. The show is on view daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the public is invited to sip award-winning Charles Creek vintages while enjoying the colorful paintings. Maeves oil paintings are begun outdoors where she intensely observes the environment, becoming immersed in it as she paints. The works are finished in the studio from her memory and personal interpretation. Maeve has been the recipient of
numerous prestigious juried awards and her works are in prominent collections all over the U.S. and Europe. Her paintings have also appeared in 4 editions of Art of Northern California and American Art Collector as well as the new juried art book Studio Visit. Specializing in high quality Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from great vineyard sources in the Sonoma and Napa counties Charles Creek Vineyard produces wines that are food friendly, fruit driven, and easily paired with meals. The winery tasting room is conveniently situated in a charming 1890s era storefront on the historic Sonoma Plaza. In addition to wine tasting and sales, the tasting room also provides space to show the work of local artists. The Charles Creek Vineyard Tasting Room and Gallery, open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., is located at 483 First St. West, on the historic Plaza in downtown Sonoma. For more information, call (707) 935-3848 or email alan@charlescreek.com.

LoXtoN CELLARS
Nine for Nine at the Harvest Fair
BY MIKE HYLAND
Open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 11466 Dunbar Rd, Glen Ellen CA 95442 (707) 935-7221 | www.loxtonwines.com
While there are countless wine competitions across the country and around the world, Chris Loxton, owner of Loxton Cellars in Glen Ellen, only enters one. And this year, at the 2012 Sonoma County Harvest Fair competition that took place in October, he entered nine wines and went home with nine medals: three gold, four silver and two bronze. One of the perks of winning at the Sonoma Harvest Fair is that you receive a medal and you get your name in the newspaper, which is nice, but the best part is that the grape growers receive recognition as well, says Chris Loxton. The vineyards where we source the grapes receive a beautiful wooden plaque with a medal, a program that was established by the Sonoma County Grape Commission in conjunction with the Fair. This is a relationship driven business, says Chris Loxton, and we all rise and fall with each others. I work with many growers throughout the Sonoma County, and while all growers believe that their grapes are the best, the recognition certainly proves it. Loxtons gold medals were awarded to his 2009 Rossi Ranch Syrah, the 2010 Pinot Noir (from Russian River Valley) and the 2010 Port made with 100% Syrah. Perhaps his biggest surprise of the competition was when the Loxton 2010 Hawk Hill Vineyard Chardonnay took home a Silver Medal. I was really happy getting a Silver award for the Chardonnay, says Loxton. Tasting competitions generally favor the big, buttery and oaky Chardonnays, which is usually what the judges seem to like. I dont make wines to suit the judges; I make wines that I like, and if it doesnt win, Im not going to change what I am doing. Loxton Cellars started in 1996 producing about 130 cases a year, gradually building up to approximately 3,000 cases annually. A native of Australia, Chris Loxton grew up in a family of grape growers that goes back more than 100 years. His father, grandfather and great grandfather all worked the land, as did Chris, until he left for the States and working at Penn Sate, Arizona State and The University of Illinois. His love of the land and grape growing never left him and his goal was to make wine in the Sonoma Valley. He keeps his hands dirty with the 5 acres of vineyards that surrounds his winery in Glen Ellen, working with the vineyard manager. I mow, irrigate and prune the vines, just enough to keep up with the family tradition but not enough to interfere with the making of the wine, says Chris Loxton.

Sonoma Plaza, a National Historic Landmark, is originally home to the last of the chain of 21 California missions. Throughout its colorful history including the Bear Flag Revolt where the California state flag was first raised in 1842 the small-town epicenter is now home to some 25 gourmet dining establishments, 40 boutique shops and art galleries as well as 18 unique tasting rooms. A well-known tourist destination, visitors come to Sonoma to experience the idyllic Wine Country lifestyle. Sure, doublewide tractors may grace the two-lane Highway 12, wide-open ranchlands blanket the valley between towns, and wooly sheep keep weeds and grasses minimal in the vineyards. But, no doubt, you will also find countless award-winning wineries and world-class restaurants in Sonoma. Sonoma is all about life, about taste and enjoying each day.

top Santa Cruz Mountains vintners Share their Stories and Wine
The Surf City Vintners group of wineries announced its Winter 2012/2013 semester of Surf City Wine University, a series of wine appreciation classes that give wine lovers the opportunity to taste and learn more about wine from a group of master vintners in an informal, enjoyable winery setting. The winter semester started December 2 with a class on sparkling wines with Barry Jackson of Equinox Champagne Cellars just in time for the holidays and New Years. Classes continue with one class a month into April, 2013, and include: Wine Tasting 101 with Michael Sones of Sones Cellars; Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir; Iberian Wines with Jeff Emery of Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard / Quinta Cruz; Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir, with Joe Miller of Rexford Winery; and Chardonnay Styles with Steve Storrs of Storrs Winery. Classes are held Sundays, from noon to 2 p.m. at the instructor winemakers tasting room/winery. Wine lovers can learn more about wine from a group of vintners who combined have more than 150 years of winemaking experience. The winemakers will share their passion and knowledge in an informal and fun environment in their own wineries and tasting rooms, and attendees will receive a diploma in Sip-ology from Surf City University. Classes can be taken individually or as a group. Those taking all classes receive a tasting card for complimentary tastings at the Surf City Vintners wineries valued at over $60. All classes include wine tasting. March 10, 2013: Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir: On the World Stage, with Joe Miller, Rexford Winery Explore the Pinot Noirs of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and discover why this region produces Pinot Noirs that are among the worlds best. Explore the influence of location on the qualities and characteristics of Pinot Noir, sample Pinots from different vineyards, and compare our local Pinots with a French Burgundy. Joe Miller taught UCSC Extension classes on the wines of Burgundy for many years and will help us better understand the 6-6-12 terroir of the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Pinots it produces.
