The District Natural Calamity Committee meeting took place on 4th March08 at Conference Hall of Collectorate, Sambalpur. The meeting was chaired by Sri P.K.Pattanaik, Collector, Sambalpur. BISWA, with support from Animal Welfare Society of Orissa, a resource partner of National Environment Awareness (NEA) Campaign, had organized the awareness campaign in its operational and non operational areas. The theme for this programme was Bio Diversity Conservation. The particular of events organized for the campaign were training, workshop and rallies on subjects related to Bio Diversity Conservation. For the campaign, slogan like briksha banchile, ame banchiba means save trees to save ourselves. On 17 th March, a training programme on Bio Diversity Conservation through medicinal p l a n t a t i o n w a s o rg a n i z e d a t Lanjiberna, in the mining areas of Sundergarh district. This programme is in precedence to BISWAs proposed

project on herbal plantation in the area. Mr.Subrat Debata, Assistant Manager, NRM and IRB Department and Mr.Sanjib Kumar Sahu, Assistant Manager, Planning Department of BISWA, hosted the programme. The topics discussed with the villagers were use of medicinal plants and livelihood opportunity from medicinal plants. On 26th March, a workshop on Protected areas: an aid to Bio Diversity Conservation was organized at Reamal, Deogarh. The village is covered under the Orissa Forestry Sector Development Programme, implemented by BISWA. Mr.Jeeban Kumar Nanda, Lecturer of Deogarh College was the Resource Person for the workshop. SUMITRA MARRIED
Marriage of another SWADHAR inmate, Sumitra
Nag, was arranged by the organisation. She was brought to SWADHAR HOME in a precarious condition almost two years ago. At that time she was suffering from tuberculosis and severe anemia. She was identified by one of our field staff and brought to SWADHAR. She was taken care of her health and was provided medicine from Govt. hospital Sambalpur. After taking a complete course of medicine, she became free from Tuberculosis. During her two years stay, she took training on Papad, Agarbati,Phenyl and Soap making. She did not want to return to her family again. So it was discussed with her parents about marriage of Sumitra with Pradeep Betra of Jharsuguda. She got discharged from SWADHAR one week before her marriage. Officials with inmates of SWADHAR attended her marriage and extended financial assistance to her. She happily went to her in-laws house to start a new life with Pradeep. Her marriage is registered at Office of

hreat to environment is a global concern at present. People at all levels are being sensitized to bring awareness on it as well as being prepared to rectify their errors. The most blatant error is loss in bio diversity for a prolonged period. As a result of it a lot of species are lost forever and we are not in a position to recover them. As a matter of fact many links of the chain, which depicts much about our own ecology, are missing. Unfortunately such a broken chain cannot provide us the desired correlated information about our own ecology. Thus much thrust is being given now to protect the so far existing chain. Some people believe that there is still hope for our survival. Then there are fatalists, who always declare that we are doomed. The world bodies like United Nations Organization (UNO) has declared that there are some severe cracks in polar glaciers, resulting in regular melting of icebergs. Unfortunately the process is irreversible and a continual threat of rising of sea level looming large on us. The world leaders are panicky on it. They apprehend that some of the low laying land areas and islands are going to be submerged by growing sea level. In this context each of us should realize that the onus is on us to bring awareness among all concerned people. It is a question of survival for all of us, which includes all living beings. Evasion at any level by anybody to this august cause could be fatal for all of us. Negligence at any level has a bearing on all of us.

The students from BISWA Innovative School and Child Labour School participated in the rally. Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) organized a three days training programme on Gender from 11th to 13th March 08 at Elysium Celebrity Country C l u b , P u n e . BISWA, Deogarh Branch organized Micro Entrepreneurship Develop (MEDP) training at Purukendu of Barkote Block on 27th March08 with the sponsorship of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). Being the Chief Guest of the occasion Sri Sachidananda Das, Project Director, District Rural Development Agency, inaugurated the training programme. Sri Chandra Shekhar Pradhan, District Coordinator of BISWA presided over the meeting while Sri Bikram Dash, AGM, NABARD joined as Chief Speaker. Main objective of the programme was to train the SHG members for their self employment and empowerment of women at large. There were altogether 120 participants in the training programme.

MEDP Training

Superintendent of BISWA Sahayata Ashram, Rengali, was informed about an abandoned new born female baby of 10 days in early morning on 15. 03.08. Then he went to the spot near the local Hanuman temple, collected the baby, brought to ashram and informed BISWA office. The news was flashed in daily news paper The Samaj. Dr Diptibala Patnaik, member of BISWA Policy Advisory Council and Child Welf a r e C o m mitt ee, Sambalpur and Mrs Bani Mahapatra, Counselor, SWADHAR, BISWA went to the Ashram for a spot verification. The baby has been examined by the Medical Officer, Rengali hospital and was named by the attending doctor as Suvra.The baby was found to be under direct supervision of Tilottama the house mother of the Ashram. She is in BISWA run SWADHAR, a home for women in difficult situation, a Govt. of India programme. She was brought to SWADHAR by the President, Nari Jagaran Kendra, Sonepur after she has been driven out of her husbands house. She has a female child of one and half year with growth retardation.During the visit she was found to be nursing the new born baby. The baby alongwith the nursing lady Tilottama was taken to Dr B. B. Bohidar, Paediatrics specialist in District Head Quarter Hospital, Sambalpur for a health check up. He examined her and was satisfied with the babys capacity to survive and supported with some medicines and massage cream. They were then taken to Sri G. R. Dubey, Chairman, Child Welfare Committee, Sambalpur and was presented before him physically. He gave her a written consent to keep the child at BISWA Sahayata Ashram, Rengali. Blood Donation Camp

A blood donation camp was organized by BISWA, at its District Office, Balasore on 17th March08. Dr.Pradeep Kumar Ash, Blood Bank Officer, Sri Bibhupada Mishra, Sri Nilamani Ghadei and Jinat Hussain of District Head Quarter Hospital provided technical support in this camp. The camp was conducted by Mrs Namita Malick, District Coordinator, Sri Parsuram Mishra, Area Coordinator, Sri Baikuntha Malick and Sri Santosh Kumar Jena. As many as thirteen people donated their blood to the blood bank.
