Appearance

Edit

Added by Lonesheep

Spike is one of those tall and lanky guys, who smokes too much and can never stand up straight. You'll typically find him in a blue leisure suit and a faded yellow shirt and tie (which fits any and all occasions as far as he's concerned). He has a careless mop of green-black hair, and brown eyes that don't exactly match. Spike doesn't give much thought about his own appearance (or... basic grooming); the kind of guy who gets by on a handsome face and a disarming smile.

Personality

Edit

Everything Spike does is indirect. From the way he speaks, to his actions, it's very rare that he shows what he's thinking. (He plainly states that he hates animals, children, and women with attitudes, yet he tolerates living with all of them. Not to mention all the times he's used a bounty as an excuse to follow some other interest he has.) But he's also a smooth talker, so it's easier for him to avoid outright lying, and he is generally good-natured enough to avoid suspicion. Maybe because he grew up without a lot of money, he has on old fashioned way of looking at the universe. Everyday occurrences, like the luxury of eating meat, excite him more than the average person. His personal ship, the Swordfish II, is modified from a very outdated racing model. He uses a very old gun model (the Jericho 941 could be considered an antique in Spike's age). And instead of relying on research or technology, he'd rather get all his information about bounties from word of mouth and rely on his instincts to do the rest. In other words, he's got a deep appreciation for the simple things in life.

Outwardly, he's a relatively easy-going guy. Despite his violent history, he never lost his sense of humor, and can detach himself from even the most serious situations enough to make light of them. Spike faced dangerous missions with the same nonchalant attitude and rarely lost his cool. He enjoyed his freedom and tended to take life as it came. Spike's crew members were often frustrated with his carelessness, as he had a record of destroying vehicles, buildings, and other property while chasing bounty heads. His apparent penchant for demolition took its toll on the wealth of the crew and they were often paying for damages instead of essential things (like food). He can be childish, with the almost adolescent daredevil approach he had while chasing bounties, and in the way he enjoyed mocking Faye. However, he has certain triggers that betray an underlying ruthlessness when he's properly motivated, although it is usually kept hidden. As obsessed as he was, he rarely mentioned his past at all. When nothing was around to excite him, he spent his free time either working out, napping, or (on the occasion they could afford it) eating; such were the extent of his ambitions on the Bebop. He is someone who believes in karma, and although he's not outwardly religious, he has a sort of fascination with spirituality. In the series, Spike befriends an old shaman named Laughing Bull, who he periodically visits for his insight and wisdom, although it's unclear just how far he bought into it. Honor and loyalty are important to him, but he wouldn't say that made him a good person. (If someone told him otherwise, he'd likely shrug and smile and that's as deep as it would reach.) Spike views his life like a dream where nothing quite feels as real as his past, so in a way everything he does in the present doesn't really matter.

BACKGROUND
Overview
Edit Spike was born in the year 2044 and is 27 during the series run. After leaving a crime syndicate he started a new life as bounty hunter and joined with his partner, an ex-cop named Jet Black, on a spaceship called the Bebop. They worked together for about three years before they took on a mismatched crew including a dog named Ein, the feisty Faye Valentine, and an androgynous eccentric hacker called Edward. They became rather misfit comrades (with varying degrees of success) before it all slowly reached an end. Much of the series focused on the inability to escape one's past, which turned out to be especially true for Spike, who considered himself dead long before he finally ran off to find the shovel for that grave he dug himself when he quit the syndicate.

Spike and Julia

Added by Lonesheep

In his time with the syndicate, he became partners with a man named Vicious. After being severely injured in a shootout, he was nursed back to health by Vicious' then-girlfriend, Julia. The two of them eventually fell in love and made plans to leave the syndicate. Vicious learned of the betrayal and gave Julia the ultimatum of killing Spike or being killed along with him. Spike was later able to fake his own death to get out of the syndicate, but Julia never met up with him, likely afraid hed be killed if she were followed. Until Spike met her again years later, he never knew her reason. At the end of the series, Spike found himself back where he started. Vicious' plans to overthrow the Red Dragons were discovered, and Vicious was captured and set to be executed. Soon both Spike and Julia were targeted as the syndicate sought out all possible links to the traitor. Vicious escaped and murdered the current elders of the syndicate. After discovering Julia's whereabouts, Spike took off to meet her. Shortly after being reunited, Julia was killed in a shootout. Spike returned to the Bebop one last time to say his goodbyes. Jet initially told him to forget his past, but came to understand that he would never let it go. Faye in particular was a wreck when he left so shortly after she had realized that the Bebop was the only home that she had left. Spike then stormed the Red Dragon headquarters to find Vicious and face off against him one last time. After a bloody battle, Spike killed Vicious and managed to walk away from the fight. He made it all the way to the stairs to greet the remaining members of the syndicate. With a smile, he mimicked a gun with his fingers and uttered the word bang and collapsed.

Note: The series is left somewhat open as to whether Spike is alive or dead. I personally believe that he died because of the dialog and clues that were given throughout the episode, most notably the premonition that was given to Jet about Spike's death. (Jet was told that all souls have their own star, and when they die, that star disappears. As the credits roll a view of the stars are shown, and one disappears as a symbolic representation of his death.)

Skills

Edit

Eye implants give you nightmares...

Added by Lonesheep

Spike has a cybernetic eye which was implanted sometime before leaving the syndicate. The eye gives him exceptional hand/eye coordination and precision. Thanks to his trades, he has a vast knowledge of weaponry, particularly guns and explosives. Spike is a seasoned martial artist; his discipline is a combination of Jeet Kune Do and French boxing. He's also an ace pilot, impressive enough that it earned him his ship. His skill, along with his near-suicidal tendencies, can make him dangerous when caught in the right mood.

Inventory and Notables

As of the Berserk Plot (see History -- when updated), Spike gained some of his only scars (lack of future!medical is lame) from when the demon that Faye turned into tried to carve his chest open. Faye doesn't know about them, and he will never tell her. The end.

He has a child's drawing of a moon given to him by Sakura, who apparently hoped it would cure his homesickness. It's crumpled up in some corner of his room, and he couldn't tell you why he still has it, but hey. It's there somewhere.

Spike obtained a steel flask swiped from the Lost Room. Still hasn't figured out if it does anything other than hold alcohol. Uses it often. Discovered that it's cursed and will strangle anyone who it's directed to when open. Claims to have lost it, but keeps it hidden.

For Christmas, several people surprisingly felt the need to give him gifts (most of which he's kept and/or consumed): Faye gave him a snow globe, lighter, and some ammo, Ed gave him a pinwheel, Abel gave him a silver watch and a lollipop, Cain gave him (Abel's) chocolate, Integra gave him some cheeses, Jo gave him alcohol and a glass poker cover, Kaylee gave him a remote-control ship, Lois gave him alcohol, Barney gave him a bottle of scotch and a cigarette case, Crowley gave him a hideous Christmas sweater. AND the castle gave him his

old driving gloves (instead of his ship). -- Thanks, castle, that was totally worth all the trauma. Spike gave... nothing in return, but he's also not used to this whole concept. Whoops.

ETC

No matter what Spike is wearing, if it has a collar, he's going to pop it. Trench coat? Pink jacket? Janitor uniform? Everything. It makes him easy to spot if he's wearing a disguise... He can be a bit of a flirt, particularly with women he has no chance with. Just because he's obsessively in love with a dead woman he can't remember, he still likes to have fun. Unfortunately, his issues with said dead-forgotten-woman make that disturbing if it ever gets further (see: doves).

Chronic chain smoker. Will literally smoke anywhere and at any time. Even if he's bleeding to death and it's raining on him... especially then. He will be one of the very first people to sign up for any sort of suicide mission. It's not that he wants to die again, but the lower the chance of success, the more fun it tends to be. Spike is very upfront with things that don't matter to him, but otherwise he's an extremely private person. He's learned that if he throws out that he's a bounty hunter from space, people don't ask more personal questions.

LOVES meat. He got it so rarely that it's almost a bigger reward than any kind of monetary prize. This needed its own bullet point.
