Club News
Meeting News:
28 SKW members and 2 guests (Hayes Copeland and Dan White) attended the March SKW workshop which John Nicholas called to order at 9:10 am. The guests introduced themselves and then John introduced the officers. John asked the membership for approval of the Feb. meeting minutes as published in the newsletter and the membership voted approved. The treasury report was $1489 cash with $378 of that amount designated as Library fund. Approval of Gordons report was given by the membership present. Under old business: A club table for SKW at the woodcarvers show was discussed but no decision was made in regard to having one. Under new business: The process for election of SKW officers for the new term was discussed and John asked for volunteers for the nominating committee. Phil Heinz & Dave Pate said they would help with the nominating committee. Gordon will be stepping down from treasurer, Ruth will step down from secretary, but will continue with the newsletter if everyone agrees, and Dave Pate said he would run for the secretary position. There will be more information at the April meeting.

Presidents Corner
Welcome to April! It is supposed to be warmer and all of us should be able to get out into the shop and do some turning. We have the major paper debacle off our minds for another year - April 15 has come and gone. So no one has an excuse now, not to go out to the shop, mount a work piece and, put some sharp metal to the wood! What! You say this is Kansas? It is what outside? 30 F? That is not spring. The ground hog blew it again! Ice? On the trees? Yes, someone will get some green wood to turn. Probably some Pear! Ok! So lets start over! The April Meeting of the South Kansas Turners is Saturday April 20. We are scheduled to meet in the nice heated building at SBEA on S. Gold Street. Great! Now that we have that all straight, we can get back to our spring time turning. Our Challenge from February was Phil Heinz' 'Egg and Cup'. I know some worked on that last month at the Workshop. There were lots of chips and shavings on the floor last month. I appreciate all the help in cleaning up. Many hands made the work go fast. The programs the next two months will work together. The things covered in April, will work with the May info to get some slightly more advanced turning. Many of us have taken a flatter chunk of wood and turned a platter or dish type shape. Many have found a more square chunk and ended up with a dish that has some side on it, and we call it a bowl. These bowls are usually 5 inches or more in diameter. If that piece of wood starts out more or less square, it gets called a cup or a pot. Put a lid on that pot and we get a box. (Continued on pg. 2)
Next months meeting will be May 18, 2013. The April monthly challenge is to be an egg and stand. Be sure and bring yours.

South Kansas Woodturners

A Good Time was had by all SKW members at the March workshop. Members demonstrating and helping other members on the club lathes were: Phil Heinz (Egg & Cup), Royce Wallace, Lloyd Curtis (Bowl), Ray Chipman, John Nicholas (Bottle Stopper) and Jim Robertson. Several different turning techniques were shown and questions were answered. As the workshop went on the attending members were asked to step up to the lathe and try the technique.
Presidents Corner Continued: When you got a box, most turners like to put something on the top. Some turn it out of one piece with the lid! Some turn it out of a separate piece, perhaps even a contrasting piece of wood. Some are short and make great handles. Richard Raffin has a lot of these and discusses why in his book on Turning Lidded Boxes. Others don't go for the short; they go for the long and thin. Generally we call them Finials. How do you get from short to something longer and thin? Perhaps some wishful thinking! It would be great if my waist line was the same size as in High School. That may never be, but perhaps my turnings can be! So our Two Part Series on Longer Thin Spindle Turnings will begin with the shapes used in spindle turnings. Then in May we will work on making them longer and thinner. There are some tips and pointers to doing this. We can do longer thinner spindles that end up as finials for a box or a lidded bowl. They can also end up as a Crochet Hook, or a Lace Bobbin, or for the little ones a Harry Potter Wand! April will be an interactive demo, with all of you contributing your information and questions. We will work on planning our spindle and the shapes involved. Then we can practice the basic cuts that are involved. Filets, coves, beads, and curves. In May we will be joined by our own Ed Rubeck, to look at the tips and pointers of making these spindles longer and thinner. John
