Goods that have to be moved According to the warehouse stock report, we can find the following supplies currently stored in the Mugla Warehouse. Majority of these supplies are food items but we still have non-food items like household useful things like tents, plastic sheets, kitchen utensils and water containers.

Possible Constraints on the Movement of the Goods In some countries, the respective government authorities set up special legislation to cover certain types of goods being moved. Therefore, before moving supplies, it is very important to enquire about the prevailing regulations and restriction. If there are some applicable rules and restrictions, we should apply ahead to get permission for the movement. If we have medicines and temperature-sensitive goods as vaccines, we need to provide proper containers or storage facilities which are appropriate for carrying such kind of goods, such as refrigerated vehicles or refrigerated containers. Most of our goods to be moved are food items and they are temperature sensitive in a sense even not as much sensitive as vaccines. Therefore these food items are perishable goods that may also need to be transported in a temperature controlled environment. It is important that the temperature is controlled all along the way to Jumna. Since our goods to be moved are food supplies, it is important to avoid sending along with the other hazardous and dangerous cargo that may contaminate our supplies. Explosives, flammable gases and liquids, flammable solids, Oxidizing substances and organic peroxides, Toxic and infectious substances, radioactive wastes and corrosive items are counted as the dangerous goods to be avoided. Characteristics of the Goods to be moved Before moving the goods, we need to consider the characteristics of the goods to be moved. According to the learning materials, the following factors must be thought about for the goods to be moved:

The size, shape and weight of the goods being transported Whether the goods are flammable, hazardous or toxic. The value of the goods. The requirement for security in transit. The degree of fragility. The speed with which the goods might deteriorate during transportation. The speed with which the goods are required.

The most bulky kinds of goods we have to move are broken rice, kidney beans, WSB, and sugar. They are in the form of grains or powder and put in the bags, each weighing from 1 Kg to 50 Kg. These characteristics of goods can influence the selection and size of the transport resource. We can think about sending them by trucks or by railway transport. We can think about how to handle these goods. Since the bags are not palletized, they can be moved by using manual labors or simple sack trucks. No hook should be used for dragging the bags because this wrong practice may damage the goods. Sugar packs are of 1 Kg bags so we need to unitize them into more stable and manageable containers like carton boxes. If they are put into the boxes, they can also palletized for our movement. In this regards, loading and unloading will be carried out manually, using available labor. This will typically be one bag or sack at a time. We have to arrange a large number of workers to complete the activity. Vegetable Oil is packed in 20 liters Tin cans so they can be palletized and we may need to use appropriate fork lift to move the pallets. For moving of the kitchen sets, jerry cans and blanket bundles, we may again use manual labor to move individual boxes and bundles instead of using pallets. While transporting all food items must be covered and protected from the direct heating of the sun, otherwise they can be destroyed by the extreme heat on the way.

In terms of stacking, we have to manage to put the heavy items like rice bags at the bottom and some light things like Jerry Cans to be put on top of the heavy and bulky cargo. Current Handling Methods and How to improve them In our cases, currently loading and unloading will be carried out manually, using available labor. This is the laborintensive style of moving goods from warehouse to the trucks and that will typically be one box, carton or sack at a time. In this case, we may require a large number of workers to complete the activity. We can improve the labor-intensive handling cargos by creating a human chain to move the goods over a distance and positioning people on the trucks to move goods to the back and stack on the trucks. Another way is that of using a conveyer belt if we can afford the equipment and power supply for it. There can be some fragile and breakable items in Kitchen sets, therefore these sets must be handle with the extreme care in moving. Selecting Mode of Transport The bulky goods such as rice and bean, WSB and sugar can be sent by sea freight which is cheap whereas the other items like oil, tents, kitchen set, blanket and jerry cans should be sent by road transportation which is more flexible and speedier.
