Name: Chrysler building Location: Manhattan, New York Architect: William Van Alen Project Year: 1928-1930 Height:

319m Floors: 77 Main usage: Commercial office

STRUCTURAL DETAILS
Building type: Skyscraper Structural system: Rigid frame Structural material: Steel Faade material: Brick Roof system: Tapered roof with spire

The building is constructed with a steel frame, and metal and brick cladding. All the bricks were manually laid by hand, creating non-load bearing walls. The frame of rolled steel I beams with riveted connections was used.

20,961 tons of structural steel, 391,881 rivets, and 3,826,000 bricks were used to assemble the building. The electric-powered elevator provided vertical transportation.

The metal framing was encased in brick cladding for fire protection. The steel frame resists lateral forces, wind loads through the stiffness provided by rigid joints between the horizontal floor components and vertical columns.

ARCHITECTURE
The Chrysler Building is considered a leading example of Art Deco architecture. The Chrysler Building has an H-plan with setbacks at the 16th, 23rd and 30th floors. The corners of the 61st floor are graced with eagles; on the 31st floor, the corner ornamentation is replicas of the 1929 Chrysler radiator caps. In total, the building currently contains 3,862 windows on its faade.

The white and dark gray brickwork of the facade emphasizes the horizontality of the rows of windows. The stepping spires are made of stainless steel with a stylized sunburst motif, and sit just above a series of gargoyles that depict American eagles which stare out over the city.
