February 1987

This three-letter word invites a myriad of answers. In June, 1986, we decided to return to the U.S. Many of you will

wonder why. Others will hear our reasons and either re spect or criticize us. We only ask you to love us since we
feel we have done the correct thing.

Many things happened in 1986. After a difficult start in 1985 in Argentina and numerous obstacles, we felt at the
start of 1986 that very positive things were going to happen in 1986. Unfortunately, this was not the case.

January brought a brief hospital stay for Debbie, but

nevertheless, it was an unpleasant experience and her

problems were not solved. February brought a confron

tation between the Quartons and us. Before seeking

Buenos Aires

counsel they decided to work by themselves. This only created problems since we lived three blocks apart and gossip abounds in a small town similarto where we lived. (Florencio Varela is a suburb of Buenos Aires.)

April was a difficult time because of the U.S.'s attack on Libya. Many of our contacts showed some degree of hos tility or dislike toward us because of their anti-American feelings. Memories of the Falkland Islands War of 1982 are
still fresh in their minds and they rememberthe U.S. siding with England.
Inflation continued at a terrible rate until it was at the point

in May that prices had risen 60% while the dollar exchange rate had only risen 10%. We have always operated on'a very tight budget but this made it almost impossible to run
a household.

Even with all the discouragements and problems it was not

easy to decide to return to the U.S. We had tried for so long to enter Argentina, and then we tried so hard to obtain our
resident visas, that it was hard to leave. However, we were in no condition to continue as missionaries. It was no

longer possible for us to ministerwe needed to be

ministered to and did not find that opportunity in Argentina.

WHAT? EVENTS OF 1986

January We enjoyed visits from Doug and Penny Lucas of Team Ministries and the Greg Waddell family a week later who are missionaries in Uruguay. Miguel attended an inter-denominationai evangelism conference with the Waddells in Buenos Aires and was greatly encouraged.

February We finally received our permanent resident visas. At the same time we learned of yet more paperwork to accomplish to operate legally as a church. We also received word that Miguel's mother was very ill in Chile so we travelled there in late
February. March We returned with Miguel's mother to Buenos Aires. Her doctor prescribed

one month of complete rest, so we took her away from her home and worries in Chile so she could rest with us in Argentina. Andrea began kindergarten classes at a private school three blocks from our home. (Remember, March marks the beginning of autumn in Argentina.) April The most wonderful thing happened in the midst of adversityFabian and Jacqueline were baptized into Christ! We were thrilled that, after so many months of teaching and studying the book of Mark verse by verse, they were convicted to
surrender their lives to God.

May through September We began to disciple Fabian and Jacqueline and

continued to witness to the rest of our contacts the best we could at that time. We

began to go to the U.S. consulate to determine what was necessary for Miguel to return
to the U.S. We had to do the entire process from the beginning since Miguel had lost
his visa to the U.S.

September through October After selling most of our household goods and the car, we went to Chile to spend time with Miguel's family until the visa was granted from the
U.S. consulate in Buenos Aires. During thistime we were counselled and encouraged

by several Chilean ministers and U.S. missionaries in Chile.

November We had been told in August that Miguel's visa would be ready in

September or October. We waited until finally a call came in November for Miguel to report to the U.S. consulate in Buenos Aires for his interview on November 17th. Miguel left immediately while Debbie and the children travelled one week later to join
him. We said our final farewells in Argentina and returned to Chile November 29th, the day Miguel received his visa.

December After a very long wait, we left Chile on December 7th. We met Debbie's mother in Orlando and spent one week at Disney World and Epcot Center. The rest of
the month was spent with family and holiday celebrations.

NOW?

We have resettled in the U.S. in Terre Haute, Indiana, home of Debbie's parents. We

are enjoying fellowshiping and teaching at the North Terre Haute Christian Church. Miguel is working part-time at a fast-food restaurant until he finds full-time employment and Debbie is working as asecretary for Manpower Temporary Services. The children are adjusting well. Andrea is attending kindergarten at Community Christian School. Although we had not considered itbecauseoffinancial reasons she is there because, 1) the public school would not enroll her at such a late date, and 2) she needed special attention because of the language and culture differences. Stephen is thoroughly enjoying the children's classes at church and being with Grand
ma and Grandpa.

Our home address is: 2517 North 13th Street, Terre Haute, Indiana 47804. Our phone

number is (812) 486-7231. Thank you for your concern and support for us these past

years. We ask you to please continue support through March to help take care of expenses in getting resettled and to pay our Social Security for 1986. We will send a
final financial report in April to all of our supporters.
Thank you very much, The Amigos
