Lake County is sometimes seen as an afterthought, but there is a reason Napa and Sonoma winemakers have been driving its hills for more than a century: the fruit is what matters, not the zip code. Want a sense of what all of California wine country was like just a few decades ago within easy driving distance? There is no better example of exactly what amazing gives than s Turn left onto Petried Forest Road, leftterroir onto Foothill Blvd./Hwy. 128, Langtry Estate in Lake County t Guenoc Valley, just the other side of Mt. St. Helena. With more than 23,000 acres under direct control, Langtrys 450 acres of vineyards prove map lines are meaningless as the grapes extend from Lake County and into the northern tip of Napa Valley. Parts of the original 4,200-acre estate were originally planted to vineyards by British actress Lillie Langtry in 1888. She pioneered a long tradition of winemaking in todays Guenoc Valley by declaring the wines from the estate the finest claret of that era. The estate was mostly fallow and added to over the years; todays Langtry winery was built almost a century later in 1981 to resemble the original still-standing, nineneenthcentury barn. The winery overlooks the Detert Reservoir and all its water fowl, including; Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, ducks and geese. Its quite clear why Langtry Estate was named Lake Countys Best Winery by the judges for the 2013 Lake County Wine Awards. Picnic tables are available for anyone who wishes to pack a lunch and come relax with a glass of Langtry wine, and the views and sense of wine country are as inspiring as one could want. Indeed, such a vast estate allows for the bottling of many wines at all pricepoints without losing quality Using grapes from many locations, Langtry produces multiple

bottlings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Claret, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel as well as the Single Vineyard series: Genevieve Chardonnay; Lillie Sauvignon Blanc; Serpentine Meadow Petite Sirah and Petite Sirah Port; and Tephra Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Proprietary Red. Equal to the tasting options are the tours. Few people in todays Napa Valley bring to the tasting bar the range of experiences in academic and commercial wine circles as Brooks Painter, and, as if more confirmation were needed besides successfully being Director of Winemaking for V. Sattuis staggering five dozen yearly bottlings since 2005, he was just named Winemaker of the Year at one of the biggest annual international wine competitions. I have known Brooks for more than a decade, and no humbler yet knowldgeable winemaker is in the Valley today, as youll read below. Dont be fooled: Brooks is the best of the best. We recently had a few minutes in his busy schedule to chat about his life in wine, and here are highlights about his recognition: JS: Congratulations on this much-deserved award! What was your initial reaction to the announcement that 2013s Winemaker of the Year was you? BP: I was totally taken by surprise it blew me away! To consider that there were 1400 other wineries and winemakers in the competition for this award is just so awesome! It was a great feeling, and I am very honored to be recognized and given the Winemaker of the Year Award in Andre Tchelischeffs name. He was so influential in bringing back California wine after Prohibition, and then he went on to be one of the more remarkable winemaker icons that Napa Valley has produced. JS: Indeed, it seems very fitting as you yourself are often described as this generations Winemakers Winemaker. What does that kind of peer-generated compliment mean to you? BP: Thats a good question. I guess it means that I have a good understanding of many wines and wine styles, and can produce 60 or so stellar wines at V. Sattui and do them all quite well. We have done very well in all-winemaker tasting panels, and that is probably the key part of it. JS: That leads me to a question of how you got started. I know that you have degrees in Chemistry and Biology, but when did you know it would be wine as career? BP: In my junior year of college I transferred from pre-med to prewinemaker. I had been working weekends in a local Santa Cruz Mountain winery and just fell in love with it. The rest is all in the bottle. JS: Well, yes, clearly this is the case today! Working with so many different lots is not easy: how do you keep track of it all? BP: I have an excellent staff and still a fairly decent memory. When you work with these wines day by day they are your intimate partners: you see them change, grow and develop right in front of your eyes (and nose)! JS: Your work isnt just making many, many wines, though. You are also responsible for viticultural and grape growing operations, supervising 230 acres of estate vineyards, and managing the relations with outside growers throughout the state. What would you like your legacy in wine to be from all of these varied tasks? BP: An excellent grower, vintner and an innovative blender who created many enjoyable wines. Thats what makes me happy. JS: I know youre busy, so one last question. Given a second chance, what would you do differently in your time in wine? What would you do again? BP: Thats a tough question. I have been very lucky and I have really enjoyed my career and am satisfied that I made the right choice. Perhaps some winemaking experiences in other countries and appellations that would have been interesting to add. Do again? I would do it all over again in a heartbeat, but things would be very different because the world and technology dont rest, so it would be very exciting! Our understanding of the chemistry of wine, of soils science and plant physiology, grows by leaps and bounds every year, and Global Warming will put a whole different spin on agriculture and wine, in yet unknown ways. But what I find really interesting about winemaking is that we use some practices that may be five hundred, one thousand, even two thousand years old. You cant always improve on human lessons learned over millennia. JS: Very well put. Thanks so much and congrats again! BP: Thank you! V. Sattui Winery is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is located at 1111 White Lane in St Helena. For more information, call (707) 963-7774 or go online to www.vsattui.com.

Thanks for Giving Us Vintners Holidays
Thanksgiving isnt the only great holiday in November. For food and wine lovers, November means its time for a different fall festival that embodies Americas natural bounty to an even greater extent. Its called Vintners Holidays at Yosemite National Park. Celebrating 32 years in 2013, Vintners Holidays brings authentic vintners not sales reps together with Yosemites guests, and the result is a top-shelf festival of good times and great wines. Whats even more special about the event is that all the action takes place inside the legendary Four-Diamond Ahwahnee hotel in the heart of Yosemite Valley. The idea for Vintners Holidays was inspired by Californias plentiful vineyards and the winemakers who tend to them with self-sacrificing devotion. Guests choose from six sessions that run from November 11 to December 6 and are treated to an intimate welcome reception with the sessions vintners, a series of wine-tasting seminars and a divine five-course gala dinner. Executive Chef Percy Whatley and the Ahwahnee Culinary Team design the custom gala menu to pair perfectly with the sessions featured wines. So not only is the atmosphere stunning, but the flavors are equally world class. With Yosemites fall colors as a backdrop, each year this event attracts more than 20 talented winemakers who are crafting some of Californias finest wines. Youll find iconic labels such as Silver Oak and Rombauer sprinkled throughout the sessions. Another fine example, the first session of 2013 (November 1112) features Frank Ostini and Gray Hartley of Hitching Post Wine, who are local celebrities on the Central Coast. Their exposure exploded since the release of the movie Sideways, and their variety of

A Napa Valley Hidden Gem
When Napa Valley is bustling and its time for a break, drop by Arger-Martucci Vineyards where you can enjoy award-winning wines in a relaxing and unpretentious setting. Located just south of St. Helena, the winery is quaint and picturesque. The tasting rooms poolside picnic area, complete with an outdoor gazebo, boasts a beautiful view of the Mayacamas Mountains and offers guests the ideal atmosphere to taste exceptional wines away from the crowds. Arger-Martucci is a boutique, family-owned winery that is more than a business venture between two owners it is a love and appreciation of making great wine that is shared by two families one Greek, the other of Italian descent. Owners Kosta Arger and Rich Martucci first met and became close friends through a Reno, NV wine tasting group in the 80s. At the time, Arger was establishing himself as an accomplished cardiologist and skilled home winemaker, while Martucci was working to build the struggling bank he had acquired. Dr. Arger, who learned to make wine in the 70s from the legendary Joe Heitz of Heitz Cellars, had always dreamed of starting a Napa Valley winery. In 1998, both families were looking for property in the Napa Valley and decided it was the perfect time to partner and start a winery. The Arger-Martucci partnership is ideal Rich manages the financial aspects of the business, while Kosta handles the winemaking. Still a practicing cardiologist in Reno, Dr. Arger spends his weekends, holidays and the harvest in Napa Valley. The winery is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and its estate reserve, Bordeaux-style blend, the Odyssey. They produce a handful of other delicious reds, including Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petite Syrah. They also produce a delicious late harvest dessert wine called Dulcinea that is simply phenomenal. All red wines, with the exception of the Petite Syrah, are estate grown on their mountainside Odyssey Vineyards, which are located 1,400 feet above the Napa Valley floor on Atlas Peak. The next generation is also involved in the winery full time. Anthony Arger handles the outside sales and marketing duties, while Vince Martucci is the assistant winemaker and oversees the tasting room. Stop by and enjoy this wonderful Napa Valley secret.

Artesa Vineyards and Winery, founded in 1991 in the then-unfashionable Carneros region just north of the San Pedro Bay by Spains Ravents family, owners of the Codorniu winery among others and makers of wine for seventeen generations, has stuck around into its third decade because the folks in charge have made producing a wide range of great wines consumers love its everyday practice, matching what the vineyards are capable of growing to what wine lovers are looking for. The sheer range of wines and the ways to taste and tour are inspiring and should place them on your must-visit list! Artesa has been well known for its focus on vineyard location, and under VP of Winemaking Mark Beringer, these ideas have been taken to the next level since 2009, focusing on small-lot production; slower, more gentler winemaking which utilizes gravity flow and light control; and a series of limited-release and reserve bottlings which allow the winery to stretch its technical legs and try new things. Using grapes from the best vineyards in Carneros, Alexander Valley, Napa Valley and Atlas Peak doesnt hurt, either, and neither does the same philosophy of minimal impact via sustainable agriculture at those sites. New winemaking programs have produced different tiers of wines, allowing for dozens of releases, something most wineries simply cannot do as most have neither the wherewithall nor the experience to handle the logistics, let alone the actual skill, necessary. Simultaneously, the attention to place, to showcasing where a wine is from, has become key; as Beringer states, We are putting Carneros back into our wines. We are bringing Carneros back to the place it needs to be. Indeed, Artesa began with a vision of the Jewel of Carneros, and Barcelona architect Domongo Triay delivered on that vision with a pyramidal structure built into its surroundings, with vineyards on all sides. An expansive terrace provides full-circle views extending out to San Francisco on clear days. Water, fountains, soundscapes and more greet you on the outside, and light-filled, contemporary spaces adorned with modern artwork, sculptures and installations by Artist-in-Residence Gordon Huether greet you on the inside, turning the wine tasting into an

experience. Like a vision of todays Spain itself, the space and wines work well together to emphasize a mixture of modern and classic sensibilities, for which the winery has been justifiably celebrated many times over the years. The current and reserve flights provide opportunities to taste multiple Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, Cabernets, Merlot, and the rarely seen Tempranillo. They are great wines, for sure, but its in the Limited Release and Single Vineyard bottlings where the winemaking playfulness really pays off, including single-vineyard bottlings of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. If you want to taste what all of the North Coast is capable of producing, this is absolutely the place to plan your visit around. Artesas tours most definitely provide ample opportunity to explore. In addition to twice-daily first come, first served guided tours, there are a range of specialty tours and tastings to choose from, each requiring reservations through the website: the Estate Reserve Experience pairs a tour of the barrel cellar and tasting through Reserve and Single Vineyard bottlings; the Vino con Queso offers Limited Release and Reserve wines paired with artisanal cheeses; the Chocolate Indulgence pairs the winerys best tasting-room-only red bottlings with a sitdown tasting of La Foret single-origin chocolates; and the International Tapas and Wine Pairing offers a tour with wines and delectable global foods. Equally, the Vines & Wines Vineyard Tour, weather permitting, allows enjoyment of wines in the vineyards from which they are grown; the Food and Wine Pairing offers five small bites from Artesas resident chef combined with Limited Release and Single Vineyard wines while the Tapas and Wine Pairing offers Spain in Napa via local artisan tapas paired with Albario and Tempranillo. Last but not least, the Ultimate Tasting gives a candle-lit cellar tasting of winery-only releases. Clearly, this is the place to sample the best of Carneros at least once, if not more. Check it out and enjoy youll be glad you did!

CONCIERGE/INNKEEPER, CANDLELIGHT INN
WCTW: If you were to visit just one winery, which would you choose and why? LAd: If I could visit only one, I would visit Spring Mountain Winery, because it is so breathtakingly beautiful, and the wines are so incredible. WCTW: What winery do you think has the best over-the-top experience to offer visitors? LAd: I think that Far Niente is rather over-thetop; its place within the history of Napa Valley winemaking is fascinating, the building is gorgeous, the grounds are stunning and to see the antique car collection is really quite special. WCTW: Where do you send guests that want to learn about wine? LAd: If they are newcomers to the world of wine I might send them to Beringer for one of the educational tastings with Dean, who is so fabulous. He makes it all so accessible, easy, and enjoyable. If my guests are budding collectors, I might send them to Shafer, where they do a more formal educational tasting. WCTW: Where would you take friends to learn about/taste organic wines? LAd: I think Grgich Hills is an excellent example of organic wines that are absolutely superb. I like their whites as much as their reds. WCTW: Who has your favorite cave tour? LAd: My favorite cave/cellar tour is at Del Dotto winery; but I may be influenced by their Cab Franc. WCTW: What areas and/or wineries would you recommend that are not part of the popular wine country? LAd: I think that the Glen Ellen area is still a bit of a hidden gem, its so rural and peaceful, and beautiful.
WCTW: Whats the best wine country picnic spot? ee: Sonoma has an abundance of superb picnicfriendly wineries. One of my favorites is Hop Kiln Winery. Their grounds offer numerous tables placed around decorative ponds set in a breathtakingly beautiful garden. Their helpful staff can help with serving utensils as well as a nice array of food items. WCTW: Which winery has the best wine-related gifts for shopping? ee: Matanzas Creek is not only a beautiful winery, but it is also very well-known for growing lavender. Their gift area is filled with a wide array of wine-related products but moreover products using their lavender. WCTW: Where do you send guests that want to learn abut wine? ee: If a guest has never taken a winery tour before, I love to send them to Benziger, as I feel their tramway tour through the property is the best in all of wine country to illustrate the making of wine from grape to glass. However, if one of my guests is truly looking to educate themselves on all areas of wine, I love to send them to KendallJackson Wine Center. From production to taking a walk in their sensory gardens to experience firsthand what really goes into wine pairings and blending, KJ does it like no other and should not be missed. WCTW: Where is your favorite place to visit and taste organic wines? ee: Deerfield Ranch Winery is not only certified organic, they also produce Clean Wine which is a term used to signify the lowest level of histamines possible. No more red wine headaches! Their cave tasting room is a cozy place to sample wines, not to mention pet friendly as well.
WCTW: If you were to visit just one winery, which would you choose and why? SC: Visit Ceago Winery in Nice (Clear Lake) for tasting and educational cheese/wine pairing. The winery is owned by a member of the Fetzer family, and is surronded by vineyards and lavender fields. WCTW: Describe the perfect day in wine country. SC: Begin with a latte and pastry at Model Bakery (Napa), and then peruse the wonderful shops and food choices at Oxbow Market. Use a limo service such as Napatac to Caldwell for wine tasting and a great view. Then on to Chappellet winery for tasting and a surrounding view of the lakes and mountains. Stop at Luna Market in Rutherford for a rest. Cap off the day with dinner on the Wine Train (dome car), then a nightcap at Bistro Don Giovanni to hang with locals and winemakers. WCTW: What winery do you think has the best over-the-top experience to offer visitors? SC: Palmaz Vineyards, it is a precise like clockwork vertical winery in the hill. It has over the top visuals, wine and owners! WCTW: Where do you send guests that want to learn about wine? SC: Robert Mondavi Winery with a tour by Richard Miami. WCTW: Where would you take friends to learn about and taste organic wines? SC: Frogs Leap (Rutherford) Theres a large garden, fruit trees, along with lots of vines. The staff is very knowledgable and friendly, too. WCTW: What areas would you recommend that is not part of the popular wine country? SC: You have to visit Coombsville (Napa) for visiting small wineries with great wines.

The Orange County Fairs Commercial Wine Competition is the largest and most comprehensive judging of California wines in the world. The OC Fair Wine Competition is now renowned worldwide, and is considered by many to be one of the countrys premier judgings. The first OC Fair Commercial Wine Competition was held in 1977. In 2013, they received 2,520 entries from wineries located throughout California. Out of which only 729 Silver Medals were awarded. It was an outstanding event and continues to hold the reputation as the largest and most prestigious competition for California wine in the country. In addition to this newest Silver medal, David Fultons 2009 Petite Sirah has also received: 93 POINTS Wine & Spirits Magazine, 2012 SILVER International Womens Wine Competition SILVER San Francisco Chronicles International Wine Competition SILVER American Fine Wine Competition SILVER The San Diego International Wine Competition The 2009 Old Vines Petite Sirah holds true to David Fultons previous releases, with elegance. This vintage provides a wider range of bright, high-tone fruit flavors emanating from the expected deep, dark color of the varietal. We are pleased by blackberry, fig, cinnamon, dark bakers chocolate and licorice aromas and rewarded with flavors of red cherry, boysenberry, raspberry and distinct vanilla on the palate, says David Fulton Winerys Stephanie Trotter Zacharia. With soft tannins, this is a round, velvety, silky wine that can be enjoyed for many years to come. We have one vineyard and make just one wine here at David Fulton Winery. Our total production is less than 300 cases a year. (The Valleys largest winery produces nine million cases a year!) We hand-sort our grapes three times before fermentation and have a three year aging program before release. Stephanie continues. The David Fulton Winery 2009 Petite Sirah is grown in the historic St. Helena, estate vineyards planted in 1860. David Fulton also built the towns first stone wine cellar next to the vineyard. He invented the celebrated One-Horse-Plow which reduced spacing between rows from 14' to 8' thereby revolutionizing plantings in the Napa Valley. The current winery was built on the footprint of the original reusing some of the same materials, looking much like it did in the early years. The vineyard and winerys current owners are David Fultons greatgrandson, Fulton Mather and his wife, Dink. David Fulton Winery & Vineyards is located at 825 Fulton Lane, just four blocks east of Hwy 29, in Napa Valleys historic St. Helena. Visitors are encouraged to visit the winery although tours and tasting are by appointment only. Have you ever dreamt about owning your own winery? Well, these days you dont need to own a winery to make your own wine. Nestled among the vineyards along Napas famed Silverado Trail youll find Judds Hill Winery and MicroCrush. This small, family-owned and operated winery specializes in creating small lots (as little as one barrel) of hand-crafted, ultra-premium custom wine for wine enthusiasts, vineyard owners and budding wine entrepreneurs. Their service lets you skip over the expense, red tape and overhead associated with owning a winery and jump right to the fun part of creating your own wine! Their journey into personal winemaking dates back to 1991 when Judds Hill Winery founder, Art Finkelstein, was asked by a neighbor vineyard owner to use his grapes to make a barrel of single-vineyard wine. Usually the neighbors fruit was sold to a winery to be blended with grapes from other vineyards and there was never an opportunity to taste the unique qualities of his vineyards harvest. Art put his winemaking equipment and talents to work on this special project and when the wine was finished the two men evenly split the barrel, which is about 24 cases of wine in total. This first venture into custom, small-lot winemaking was a personal favor, but word travelled quickly throughout Napa and beyond Now, in their third decade, these pioneers in personal winemaking have become the popular choice for grape growers, backyard vineyard owners and enthusiasts, looking to share their wine with family and friends. It has also become a great fit for businesses looking to market their company in a unique way, as well as those who want to create their own small wine brand. So how does this all work, you might ask? Judds Hill makes producing your own wine easy. They offer all-inclusive, expert winemaking services from the time you bring in your fruit until the time its bottled. If you dont have your own fruit, its not a problem. With over 30 years in the wine industry, Judds Hill has been able to establish long-term relationships with growers around the Napa Valley (and beyond) and is able to source from a variety of premium vineyards. If you are interested in getting something into bottle sooner, they offer a selection of premium wines from their cellar that can be custom blended to perfection. You are invited to work closely with the MicroCrush team every step of the way, making decisions on everything from barrel choices to packaging. Meet one-on-one with the winemaker to sample your wine and make stylistic decisions as your wine develops, then revisit your wine prior to bottling to craft the perfect blend for your palate. If your schedule or distance doesnt allow you to participate, let Judds Hill MicroCrush take the wheel. Their celebrated reputation, proven expertise and stability can give you the confidence that your fruit is in good hands. In fact, Judds Hill MicroCrush was recently selected by Food and Wine Magazine as, THE place for custom winemaking in Napa Valley. Oh, and as an added bonus ... MicroCrush vintners not only get to enjoy making their own custom wine, but they also get to benefit from the same perks offered to the Judds Hill Wine Club. These include discounts on wine and local lodging, as well as invitations to all of the Wine Club and MicroCrush events! You also get special pricing on Bottle Blending Day Camps, which are mini versions of MicroCrush. This is a great way to have your friends and family experience what you are doing, but on a smaller scale. Judds Hill offers a fun, personalized and educational experience for those who have always dreamed of creating their own wine. formed structural concrete walls, the backlit tasting bar, porcelain floor tiles, Venetian plaster walls, imported Italian windows and custom-made tables and chairs, crafted from repurposed, early 20th century wood beams and architectural steel. Hestan Vineyards was founded in 1996 when owners Stanley and Helen purchased a 127-acre cattle ranch on the eastern slopes of Napa Valley, with the goal of growing and making wines to rival their favorite Bordeaux bottlings. Today, 56-acres are planted to all five of the principle red Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. With the help of renowned winemakers Thomas Rivers Brown, Jeff Gaffner and Mark Herold, the Chengs have built a portfolio that includes their flagship Hestan Cabernet Sauvignon ($100/bottle) and Chardonnay ($50/bottle); Meyer Cabernet Sauvignon ($50/bottle); and Stephanie Proprietary Red ($60/bottle), Cabernet Sauvignon ($50/bottle) and Merlot ($40/bottle). While the reds are grown at their Hestan Vineyards estate in Napa Valley, the Hestan Chardonnay is produced from grapes grown at the Chengs small San Francisco Bay vineyard, planted at the southern tip of Hwy 29 on the grounds of their Meyer Cookware Company. The Hestan Vineyards portfolio is sold via the winery website and mailing list and in select markets nationally. Hestan Vineyards Tasting Room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is located at 6548 Washington Street in Yountville. Bennett Lane Winery in Calistoga was started by Randy and Lisa Lynch and, while it is surrounded by vineyards in Northern California, it has its roots in Europe, where they first discovered their love of fine wine and the relationship between wine and food. When they decided to pursue their passion for wine, they found land where the topography, geography, soil and climate form a unique spot to grow grapes. Vines, particularly Cabernet, thrive here. Today, this small winery has its label on almost three dozen wines scoring 90+ in just seven vintages. For a winery this size that is amazing. Maximus Red Feasting Wine best shows the results of their constant effort to create great wine. Crafted in limited amounts from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, it was an immediate hit. In addition to red Maximus, they also produce a Maximus White Feasting Wine, Reserve Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and a dessert wine. The winery also has a hot air balloon to take guests aloft for a spectacular view of wine country. All part of the special Bennett Lane experience.

Travel back over a 125 years, to 1884, when Frank Family Vineyards, between St. Helena and Calistoga, was known as Larkmead Winery. You can still see the past in the vineyards that surround the home that have been faithfully restored and now houses the winerys tasting room. Outside, the carefully trimmed lawn and rose bushes, old oak trees and manicured hedges share the expansive space with the barrel cellar and another old winery building constructed of native sandstone. History aside, what it comes down to is their wines, of course. Frank Family reds represent what red wines should be. With so many wines having a Robert M. Parker, Jr. score of 90 or above, I would I would never miss the opportunity to sample the Reserve Chardonnay and the Reserve Cabernet. Their Chardonnay is quite simply an elegant wine to have with food, or just by itself; it has always been in a league of its own. Each vintage is a benchmark for the varietal. In addition to the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, there is a rich, spicy Napa Valley Zinfandel that explodes on the palate. But then what wine lover would pass up a glass of the Rutherford Reserve Sangiovese, the Reserve Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir or a taste of limited edition Winston Hill Red Wine? Then add sparkling wine, a Late Harvest Chardonnay dessert wine, and the rare Zinfandel Port. Some wineries have a single wine with a cult following; virtually all of these hand-crafted, small-production wines could make the same claim. The tasting room where you can sample these nectars is almost always full of people who not only enjoy fine wine, but unabashedly revel in it. The staff, led by legendary Napa Valley personage Dennis Zablosky, is no less enthusiastic. We have always promised that Youll never have better wine ... or a better time. We have never altered from that since the very beginning. Another legend, Rich Frank, a Hollywood icon and Emmy-winning executive and innovator. He left the glamor of Hollywood to settle in the Napa Valley. His hands-on mission was to have a winery that could compete with any winery in the world when it came to excellence. One visit to the tasting room, one sip of the wine that bears his name would confirm that, once again, his goals were achieved at every level.

bringing fun and fancy to any occasion. Sourced from prime California vineyard locations, Fancy Pants is produced by Napa Valley-based Trinchero Family Estates. The Fancy Pants Red Wine is a blend of Zinfandel, Cabernet and Merlot. The Zinfandel brings blackberry jam flavors, the Merlot adds a generous mouthfeel, and the Cabernet contributes rich flavors and firm tannins to round out the wine. It is great on its own or as an accompaniment to grilled meats or chicken. The Fancy Pants Pinot Grigio is gently harvested in the early morning and immediately sent to press for gentle processing allowing the wine to develop bright, clean fruit character. Crisp and refreshing, this Pinot Grigio is the perfect accompaniment to gnocchi with butter and sage, or a good book. Fancy Pants wines are now available nationally for $9.99.

From May through November, The Wine Carriage is a fun, intimate excursion through select vineyards of the Alexander Valley in Sonoma County. Owner and well-informed tour guide Bret LeRolland, is coachman of a shade-top carriage pulled by mighty draft horses meandering between rows of vines and up and down scenic countryside while guests pluck grapes right from their seats. This is no ordinary tour its an off-road, insiders trek (and the only horse-drawn carriage tour in wine country). The outings begin at 11 a.m., starting with a visit to Alexander Valley Vineyards where guests are taken to the underground, arched wine cavern filled with the aroma of aging wine in oak barrels, and treated to samples straight from the cask. What do vegetable farming and owning a vineyard and winery have in common? Quite a lot actually, especially if your name is John Balletto. In 1977, when other seventeen-year-olds were busy going to discos and listening to their eight track players, John Balletto became a farmer. His father had recently passed away, so John took on the responsibility of supporting his family. With only $200 in his pocket (and the help of his mother, Hazel), John started farming produce on the familys five-acre ranch in Sebastopol. In 1981, John purchased his first ranch in Santa Rosa (now home to the winery) and within a few years he became the largest vegetable farmer north of San Francisco. Ballettos vegetable business was still going strong in 1998, when a string of El Nino rain storms ruined three separate vegetable crop plantings. It was at this point that Balletto started converting his vegetable fields to vineyards (there were already existing vineyards on the home ranch in Sebastopol, so conversion to vineyards seemed the logical way to go). The Balletto family now farms more than 600 acres of vineyards in the Russian River Valley but keep only 10 percent (the cream) of the resulting crop to carefully craft their own wines. The other 90 percent of the grapes are sold to other wineries. In 2002, the Balletto family worked with Sonoma Countys Agriculture Preservation & Open Space District and generously donated a portion of their estate (the winerys western boundary) to the Laguna de Santa Rosa. This vast wetland habitat and major tributary of the Russian River is home to numerous species of birds and animals. It is a local treasure it is open to the public and offers miles of beautiful hiking and biking trails. Along with preserving natural habitats, the Balletto familys altruistic tendencies also include their staff they may be the only winery with a regulation-sized baseball diamond on the property, built because the vineyard crew asked John Balletto to sponsor their baseball league. John not only sponsored the league, he custom built a field of dreams for them. Games are on Sundays during spring and summer. Lets talk about the wines from Balletto Vineyards their first

commercial vintage was in 2001. Now, more than a decade later, the Balletto wines are still going strong consistently garnering good press and winning multiple medals. I tasted a handful of wines during my visit and loved them all, but Im featuring a couple of wines from Sexton Hill Vineyard here. This vineyard was specifically planted in the Russian River Valley with Winemaker Anthony Beckman in mind, and he certainly works his magic with the resulting fruit! 2011 Chardonnay, Sexton Hill Vineyard ($38): This is a gorgeous Chardonnay mouthwatering aromas of baked apple, peach, buttered toast and Crme Brulee continue as flavors in the rich, yet juicy mouth. Its the wine version of Lauren Bacall, wearing a white satin gown, arching a perfect brow as she looks at you over her shoulder classic and elegant. 2011 Pinot Noir, Sexton Vineyard ($42): Mmmm. What a delicious Pinot Noir! Alluring aromas of cherry cola, rose petal, vanilla and baking spices lure the taster into a silky, sexy mouthful of consistent flavors. This wine is as good or better than other Russian River Pinot Noirs sold at twice the price! Buy some. Buy some now! Dont miss a visit to Balletto Vineyards!
John and his mom, Hazel, back in the vegetable days, circa 1977.

In a time of up and coming winemakers, Csaba Szakal and his wife Sandy opened their En Garde Winery Tasting Room in downtown Kenwood just over a year ago. They are the new powerhouse couple in the wine industry and have proved that they are here to stay. Their wines have garnered serious attention in a short period of time. Csaba is a fourth generation Hungarian winemaker who came to this country to work in the Silicon Valley. His wife Sandy grew up in Sonoma County and is well-versed in the wine industry. With his impressive winemaking experience, and her numerous personal contacts, En Garde Winery turned from dream into reality. His winemaking style could be described as avant-garde and he is extremely passionate about producing extraordinary wines. Grapes are sourced from the most prestigious vineyards in California and since En Garde Winery is considered a micro-winery, this is an incredible accomplishment. Each varietal is carefully sourced from specific growers and he hand selects only the best grapes available that are consistent with the quality of wines he crafts. Csabas Hungarian influence comes through in his wines yet he puts his own California twist on them. This is essentially true of his Tempranillo. This wine has traditional vanilla notes as found in a Spanish Rioja but has more oak as it is aged in oak barrels for 1- years. His flagship wine is the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from the famed Diamond Mountain in Napa Valley. For two consecutive years

this wine has also won first place at the Cabernet Shootout and double gold at the San Francisco International Wine Competition providing consistent quality and attention to detail. In a sea of Chardonnays, Csaba has chosen the white wine grape varietal Albario because he fell in love with it while in Spain. This wine is usually grown in Galicia, Spain and is the distinct white in their portfolio. Staying true to this varietal, Csaba purchases grapes from a Spanish grower in the Borden Ranch appellation, so this wine is a true representation of an Albario. This wine also won the Best Micro Winery White in Show at the California State Fair Wine Competition so again this is a wonderful example of his philosophy that the best grapes equal the best quality. Also on the Current Release Tasting Flight, guests have the opportunity to experience Csabas Hungarian influence with a Dry Ros. This wine represents his heritage and honors his Grandfathers winemaking style. For a refreshing drink on a hot summer afternoon, he suggests mixing in club soda which will enhance the strawberry and raspberry flavors in the wine. Either way, this wine is so crisp and food friendly and a great wine to share! The berry port Magdalena, is named after his Grandmother and Mother and honors his familys winemaking traditions yet is made with 100% fruit juices. This vintage made modern style wine has pronounced tart cherry flavor and is such a delight to enjoy after dinner. Their tasting room is as sophisticated as their wines and it has European charm making guests feel welcomed as soon as they arrive. There is a main tasting bar for seated tastings or separate tables so prepare to relax and taste their current release or reserve wines. Most days guests will find Csaba in the tasting room and will enjoy his informative discussions about his wines and heritage. Tastings are available daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The town of Kenwood is on the quieter side of wine country so its less crowded and offers guests more intimate tasting experiences. En Garde Winery is a newcomer, yet should be on your wineries to watch list so come in for a tasting and enjoy their exceptional grape to glass wines!

32nd Annual harvest wine celebration, september 1-2
The 2013 Livermore Valley Harvest Wine Celebration marks the 32nd year that people have gathered over Labor Day Weekend to enjoy the fruit of the vines in one of Californias oldest wine regions. Sunday, September 1, and Monday, September 2, between noon and 5 p.m., more than 40 area wineries will offer Livermore Valleys best wine, food, art and music to ticket holders. Bus transportation between wineries will be available on Sunday only. This years celebration will include Livermore Valleys newest wineries: Dante Robere Vineyards, Ehrenberg Cellars and Darcie Kent Vineyards, as well as the new winery and tasting room of Cuda Ridge Wines.
Sunday, September 1
Thirty-one wineries will host festivities at their tasting rooms across Livermore Valley and ten more wineries will be pouring at either Concannon Vineyard or Wente Vineyards on Tesla Road. All locations will offer wine tasting, fresh food vendors, local artisans and festive music. Celebration guests are invited to ride complimentary shuttle buses between the wineries. The buses will travel on two different routes, each serving at least 14 winery locations. Free parking will be available at Robertson Park in Livermore, where guests can board buses and transfer between routes during the day. Bus stops may be as far as 300 feet from winery locations, so guests riding buses must be prepared to walk up driveways. Wineries are open only to ticket holders with event wristbands and no outside food is allowed.
monday, September 2
Thirty-five Livermore Valley wineries will continue the celebration with wine tasting, vendors and music at their tasting rooms. There will be no bus service. Five wineries will pour at Wente Vineyards on Tesla Road and one will pour at Concannon Vineyard. See winery listing for details. Food at all winery locations will be locally prepared and moderately priced. Admission price includes a commemorative Livermore Valley wine glass, tastings of at least two wine varietals from each participating winery, official event program and exclusive discounts on wine purchases.
