Faith Encounters the Ecological Crisis (A Just Matters Study Module

Every day, we experience the many ways the ecology of our communities is changing and even breaking down toxins in our air, waters, and food, extinction rates unseen since the end of the dinosaur age, changes in weather patterns, diseases impacting our forests, the rise in human diseases like cancer, asthma, and diabetes, invasive species, and more.

a Franciscan Intermezzo event

Contact: Dr. Jackie Stewart, St. Anthony Shrine, 617542-6440, ext. 143 or email SAS.Evang@gmail.com. Offered by Franciscan Adult School

St. Francis of Assisis encounter with Sultan Malek al-Kamil is one of the most important and instructive events in the life of this mendicant friar. Adopting an attitude of respect and dialogue, rather than selfrighteousness and vehemence, he and his companion, Illuminato, by all accounts engaged in a sharing of faith with the sultan and his court, each presenting his belief in the one God from his own perspective. Based on one of the lesser-known stories from the life of Francis of Assisi, In the Footprints of Francis and the Sultan presents a paradigm for meeting those whose way of life is unknown, those who are other, those who have been demonized. This peacemaking paradigm uses the story of the 1219 encounter between Francis and the Sultan to help us negotiate our difficult interfaith encounters and other misunderstandings and hostility between peoples. Damietta Project members will share how we delved into the encounter between Francis and the Sultan and discovered tools to build trust and relationships in bold, courageous, respectful ways. Thus, together, we hope to make a contribution to bringing forth the gift of Gods peace and lessening the violence in our world. With Francis and the Sultan as teachers, understanding, courtesy, collaboration, and even friendship can reach new heights. Such is the way of peacemaking.

The module has a strong focus on Catholic social teaching and asks very big questions about our priorities, our moral values, what we owe the world now and the future generations that come after us, and what God intended for this creation. The material is challenging and likely to raise some troubling questions and emotions. This is good! It is necessary! It is also necessary that participants enter the process with the desire to listen to one another and to learn from one another.

Faith Encounters the Ecological Crisis identifies that ways in which we are already living beyond the biocapacity of the planet and challenges participants to identify elements of a spirituality for living through the ecological crisis. Participants will view several films, engage in small and large group discussion, and meet with several guest speakers as they consider various aspects of the ecological crisis. Participants will also identify ways to live beyond the end of this world with a rich and vibrant Earth community still intact, still able to support life.

By the end of the process, participants will have seen what the crisis has to teach us about how to live faithfully in this moment in time, brought Gospel values to the forefront of their reflections on the state of the Earth, gained a sense of empowerment within the context of community, and explored options for making a commitment to action.

Pray for Peace in the Middle East!

Spirituality of the Readings

20th Sunday of Ordinary Time C Reading I: Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10 Responsorial Psalm: 40:2, 3, 4, 18 Reading II: Hebrews 12:1-4 Gospel: Luke 12:49-53

Spirituality of the Readings

A Furious Love

increasing certainly that she will put him, not merely down a cistern as soldiers did Jeremiah in the First reading, not just outside the gates and walls, but right straight into the jaws of death. It is a baptism, he says, and he wants it. He shouts to his disciples that he has come to set the earth on firejust like the blazing lightning wants to tonight. How great is my anguish until it is accomplished, he says.

How sweet of old earth to rain down abundance so fiercely.

I sit on a screened-in porch in Wisconsin, where I am making retreat. I listen to the delicious, drenching sounds of this huge rain, splattering and slapping the earth. Is it friend or foe? For sure such a storm could take me down if I were silly enough to be walking in it. Its violence is driven mainly by its need to get water out of the skies and into the earth as fast as possible. No intention of harming anything. But I remember the floods in New Orleans and New York and feel a twinge of fright.

Is Jesus the storm or is he the stormed upon? Both, I think. He is filled with the Spirit of God and he cannot wait to let that Spirit flow. But he must stand in the pounding rain too. He will not run away. He walks into a continuous storm that has by no means reached its apex.

No wonder he is distraught. Love is not just sweetness and light, it is the dark and pounding rain of peoples emphatic no as well.

The rain just ignores me. In fact it redoubles its efforts. Its huge sound gets huger, like a swell of applause.

But why so furious a love, one that is so sweetly intended but so able to hurt? do not know. Maybe tough love is what keeps our planet in bloom. Hopkins addressed God as Father and fondler of heart thou hast wrung: Hast thy dark descending and most art merciful then.

rain like this carries goodness for the tender, tough earth, I know this. Comfort sighs deep within the storms rough pounding, and big branches bow their tousled heads to receive their cleansing and their nourishment.

How could Jesus speak Gods Word from a criminals cross? Yet he does.

I think of the First reading again. There, Jeremiah is literally stuck in the mud. He had prophesied too truly and too many times. They threw him into an empty cistern with just enough mud for him to sink into. ow could he prophesy from the midst of the mud?

The rains pour down. I see a single lamp across the lake showing through it all. Is this a porch-light of welcome? I am warmed by its glow. But as I look directly, it surrenders itself as just an old, white piece of leaf that has caught in the screen and reflects light from my lamp inside. I play a game. I shift my eyes up and it is a lantern. I look back and it is a remnant of leaf-life. Back, forth. Which is it really? I take comfort, since, of course, it is both. It is a lantern and it is close to home.

However, with the deadly load of explosives still strapped to him, he must spend 48 hours in the city, caught between the men that sent him who can blow up his bomb remotely, the Israeli police patrolling the streets and his new-found companions. Spending this time with Keren and his new friends, Terek discovers the spark of life returning to fill his soul, but when the weekend ends, Terek must make the decision of his life.

Terek, a Palestinian forced on a suicide mission in Tel Aviv to redeem his father's honor, is given a second chance when the fuse on his explosive vest fails to detonate. Forced to spend the weekend in Tel Aviv awaiting its repair, Terek must live amongst the people he was planning to kill. To his surprise he connects with several Israelis on the outskirts of society, including the beautiful Keren, who has cut off contact with her Orthodox family and upbringing. With nothing to lose, Terek and Keren open up to one another, and an unlikely love blooms between two isolated and damaged individuals, raised to be enemies.

Mackenzie Allen Phillipss youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in this midst of his great sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change his life forever. Part 1, narrative and personal reality, will focus on the story as presented in Chapters 1 - 4, and put these events in dialogue with our own life experiences. Part 2, spirituality and theology, will examine the ways the Persons of the Trinity are presented and how these images might or might not intersect with our own images of and relationships with God.
