School district hires 50 new staff
members for 2013-2014 school year
BY HEATHER FIORE
The Lawrence Sun
With school starting in a few
days, parents and children are fo-
cused on getting ready for the first
day of school and scrambling for
last-minute supplies.
But, teachers and administra-
tors have already been preparing
for weeks for the students arrival,
and have a lot of new information
to disclose about the upcoming
school year. There is a range of
improvements and additions that
have been made to the schools for
the 2013-14 school year, Superin-
tendent Crystal Edwards said.
The district hired 50 new staff
members, and two staff members
were promoted to positions in ad-
ministration.
Anthony Buczynski is the new
Lawrence Middle School assistant
principal, and Anthony Mormile
is the new guidance supervisor.
Also new this year are a variety of
programs and courses in each of
the schools, Edwards said.
LTPS will now be offering new
languages, including AP French,
AP Mandarin and American Sign
Language, on behalf of dual en-
rollment partnerships between
LTPS, Mercer County Communi-
ty College and The College of New
Jersey. An Intro to Exceptional
Children program will also be of-
fered, on behalf of a dual enroll-
ment virtual course between
LTPS and MCCC.
The district also distributed
1,200 laptops to students in grades
six to 10, and revamped its men-
toring program for new teachers
and experienced teachers who are
new to Lawrence, Edwards said.
In regard to facilities, LTPS is
also working on 10 new upgrades
this year. Facility upgrades in-
clude the retrofitting of the old
lights in the Lawrence High
School and Lawrence Middle
School gyms and installing new,
energy efficient lights; completing
a cardio room for use by athletes;
installing air-conditioning and
new furniture in the LHS library;
preparing and maintaining the
athletic fields; resurfacing the
LMS gym and installing new
bleachers; replacing LMS and
LHS basketball backboards with
glass backboards; replacing
macadam for Lawrence Interme-
diate Schools exterior basketball
courts and adjacent play area;
providing a walkway around the
perimeter of Slackwood Elemen-
tarys playground so students can
easily access the exercise equip-
ment stations; installing a new
projector in the LIS all purpose
room; and installing new white-
boards in LHS classrooms.
The first day of school for
LTPS is Monday, Sept. 9.
For information go to ltps.org.

A
s students return to school
this week (or early next), we
all get back into a daily rou-
tine. The unofficial end to summer has
passed, and with it, a return to a nor-
mal life whether you were lucky
enough to have a three-month vaca-
tion or not.
Back to school signifies a new begin-
ning, maybe even more so for many
than the drop of the ball on New
Years. Its a time for looking ahead,
not for looking back.
Here at The Sun, back to school sig-
nifies the start of a busier time. In this
weeks paper, and in coming weeks pa-
pers, youll begin to see coverage of
the return to school from stories
about upcoming changes in the school
district to high school sports team pre-
view stories to photos of students ar-
riving, backpacks in tow, to their first
day.
And as students prepare to embark
on a new adventure in a new school
year, we remind you that The Sun is
here to shine light on your school,
your team, your son, your daughter,
your teachers, your group, your PTA,
your organization and your neighbors.
We want to congratulate Suzy on a
job well done when she is named to
her schools honor roll, deans list or
when she receives academic recogni-
tion.
We want to print photos of Johnnie
waving goodbye to mom or dad as he
enters his new school for the first
time.
We want to announce your PTAs
meeting dates and times, so that new
members can join and support the
school. We want to send a reporter to
cover that big game, big event or big
fundraiser for your school.
But we cant do all this without your
help. Please reach out to us via e-mail
(our preferred contact method) or
phone anytime you have an item for
publication or an idea for us to track
down. Our contact information is to
the right.
As we said from Day 1, this is your
newspaper. And we mean it. Play a
part in making it better by keeping us
informed. Welcome back to school!

Big thanks to county park
facilities for Special Olympics
On behalf of the athletes representing
23 softball teams from 18 international and
US Special Olympics programs, we express
our sincere thanks and gratitude to the
Mercer County Parks Commission for its
extraordinary support as host to the 2013
Special Olympics North America
Softball Invitational from Aug. 24 to Aug.
25.
The effort of the county park staff and
participation of the county leadership
demonstrate a precedent-setting commit-
ment that will offer athletes the most ex-
traordinary experience next summer at
the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games.
County Executive Brian Hughes and Exec-
utive Director of the Parks Commission
Kevin Bannon, along with their staff, of-
fered every resource possible to ensure a
first-class experience for everyone in atten-
dance.
More than 345 athletes and unified part-
ners, 90 coaches, 225 volunteers and thou-
sands of family members and spectators
attended this event, which is being held in
advance of the 2014 USA Games.
Mercer County park facilities are excep-
tional and its resources are superior to any
venue utilized for any prior Special
Olympics USA Games. We are looking for-
ward to an amazing event next year.
On behalf of the 2014 Special Olympics
USA Games Organizing
Committeethank you.

All of programs are offered

Osmer said some funds will

Conversation Nov. 14
Editors note: The following is a
letter for Lawrence Township Pub-
lic School Superintendent Crystal
M. Edwards:
I hope your summer was filled
with fun and wonderful moments
spent with family, friends and
pets. Although I did not travel
much this summer, I did spend
some quiet, quality time with my
family in my own backyard. Its
during these times that I reflect
on how precious children really
are and how I am so blessed to be
able to lead in their growth and
development.
As the summer comes to an
end, Id like to thank all of the
people who worked diligently
these past two months interacting
with our children and families,
interviewing and hiring new
staff, maintaining and upgrading
our facilities, and doing all the
behind the scenes work neces-
sary for a successful school year.
On Thursday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
in the Lawrence High School
Commons, well host our fifth
consecutive Community Conver-
sation.
The conversation gives us an
opportunity to provide parents
and the community with an up-
date on district happenings and
allows us to get your valuable
input. For information, check out
the Back-to-School Bulletin at
ltps.org.
Have a safe and enjoyable rest
of your summer.

The Original
Lacrosse Club to
offer Little Laxers
for boys and girls
The Lawrence Lacrosse Club is
pleased to offer a Little Laxers
program for boys and girls in pre-
k through second grade this fall.
The program will consist of six,
one-hour sessions held on Satur-
day afternoons from 2 p.m. to 3
p.m., mid-September through Oc-
tober.
The clinics will be held in Cen-
tral Park in Lawrence Township,
adjacent to the baseball and soft-
ball fields. The cost of the pro-
gram is $30 ($5 per session) and
the club will provide all neces-
sary equipment.
Lacrosse is a dynamic, high-
scoring sport that combines the
best elements of basketball,
hockey and soccer. Little Laxers
offers an introduction to the
sport in a relaxed and fun envi-
ronment.
The participants will be taught
the basics of lacrosse through
fun games led by experienced
coaches.
The Lawrence Lacrosse Club is
excited to introduce Matt Foret,
head lacrosse coach at West
Windsor Plainsboro High School
South, and Dan Brennan, assis-
tant lacrosse coach at Lawrence
High School, as the coaches for
this program.
Registration is open until Sept.
21.
