Senior center buys property

During the past three months, the Clinchfield Senior Adult Center staff and board of directors have been working on two previously unanticipated projects. First, we learned that the old Range Chevrolet property, which adjoins our current site, was available for purchase and we subsequently entered into a contract with John Marotta, the current owner, to buy the property when demolition is complete. For several years, we have hoped to get an opportunity to acquire that lot to accommodate future needs of the senior center, and especially for additional parking. That was reason for celebration, but what happened next was even more unexpected: we were provided the opportunity to purchase the Range School of Dance property, which adjoins line-dancing classes. The solution to our exciting dilemma was to request the Erwin Board of Mayor and Alderman to purchase the Marotta property in accordance with the contract the senior center board had negotiated and for the BMA to then grant a long-term lease to CSAC similar to the 99-year lease for $1 per year which we have with Unicoi County for the site on which our current facility is constructed. On May 11, the Erwin BMA unanimously approved a motion to purchase the property, which will be used for additional parking. That action by the BMA frees up more of our available funds to be used for the purchase of the Range studio property. Our plan is to finance most of the purchase amount and make annual payments on the principal. Incurring this debt will require additional funding resources, as well as some additional operating funds, so we are exploring new types of fundraising ideas. Obviously, we welcome all donations designated toward the purchase of the property. We will also welcome any business or organization that would like to participate in an annual or periodic fundraising event to help with this noble project. The acquisition of this property will provide needed space, now and in the future, for the many activities that serve our expanding senior population. CSAC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. For information about senior center programs and activities, visit the senior center at 220 Union St., Erwin or call 743-5111 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Our mailing address is P.O. both our current site and the Marotta property. That created a dilemma how to acquire both pieces of property for the senior center with limited funds and thus ensure room for future expansion, which will undoubtedly be needed within the next six to 10 years, with the baby boomers just beginning to retire. An added bonus is that the existing dance studio can be used immediately for our Yoga classes, which have been held at Ninth Street Baptist Church for 3 years, and for our aerobics and

Get Acquainted Club meets for May

The Get Acquainted Club met at Centenary United Methodist Church for its May meeting. The members prepared a variety of lunch items, that included salads, salmon spread, spinach and chicken rolls, pickled peppers, fruit selections, zucchini bread, old-fashioned oatmeal cookies and brownies. When Anne Frazier called everyone to clean out their closets and bring to our White Elephant Sale the response was overwhelming. They arrived with collectibles, to lunch. Judy Moss brought many of her treasures. She was also the big spender, outspending everyone by $63. Gloria Morton ran second with $47. Both these ladies have an eye for a bargain. They each said of the items were not for themselves but as gifts for a friend. Fannie Mae Parsley brought her 23 year old granddaughters collection of Hello Kitty. Penny Jones was quick to place her lucky bid to take home the entire collection. Frazier stayed busy describing the goods. Lucinda Britton and I joined in by modeling the jewelry, which was a fast sale. Sharlotte Rynders served as keeping track of the sales. It was a fun day and everyone left with a great bargain. Frazier was hostess and Jean Bergendahl served as co-host. Those attending were Lynn Woodruff, Betty Peterson, Eva Dewolf, Angie Georgeff, Phyllis Hawk, Johanna Shelton, Pat Long, Vivian Ledford, Suzie Hughes, Moss, Morton, Jones, Britton, Rynders, Parsley, Bergendahl, Frazier and I.

Barbie is a cute little dog with short legs and a long body like a Dashshund. We believe her to be approx 1 year old. She is white with honey colored ears and spots. She seems to enjoy being picked up and petted. Barbie is very playful and a great size for a little house dog.

These dogs and cats and more are available for adoption at the Unicoi County Animal Shelter. For more information about these pets, to volunteer or to make a donation, call 743-3071. The shelter is located at 185 Industrial Drive, Erwin.
