MARINE ELECTRIC PROPULSION

ABSTRACT

MARINE ELECTRIC PROPULSION is a kind of propulsion

method of the ship used has been an important area of research for
workers who are from Ship Science and Technology. The traditional method
of driving the ship forward is to use the prime mover to drive the propeller
through the shaft. And the ship's electric propulsion is driven by the prime
mover to generate the generator, and the electric energy is supplied to the
propulsion motor by the frequency converter, and the propeller is driven by
the propulsion motor to push the ship forward. Electric propulsion has the
advantages of high mobility, good safety and reliability, high degree of
automation and good environmental protection effect, and is becoming the
advancing way of the ship in the 21st century.

Increasing fuel costs and regulation of emissions

are encouraging operators, shipbuilders and researchers to seek
improvements in marine vessel efficiency. In the area of vessel electrical
systems, there are increasing choices as a result of research and
development over the past decade giving rise to a number of promising
new technologies. Promising new battery chemistries are being developed
and existing chemistries are being enhanced with Nano-technology. Super
capacitors and fuel cells are now powering ferries. Permanent magnets are
enabling novel motor topologies and solar panel prices are decreasing. In
addition to new technologies recently commercialized for vessels, new
developments in electric vehicles and grid electrical systems will be
applicable to the marine environment. This article reviews emerging
electrical technologies and it focusses on those with potential for
improving vessel efficiency within the next decade. Applications are
mentioned below:
 DREDGERS
 DYNAMIC POSITIONING VESSEL
 TUGS AND TRAWLERS
 ICE BREAKERS
 RESEARCH SHIPS
 VESSELS FOR OFFSHORE INDUSTRIES
 FERRIE
Electrical propulsion system has already been
established in the maritime industry for certain ship types (Cruise, DP
etc.) and with several stringent environmental norms and regulations
being included in the industry it certainly has a very bright future
going forward.
