AsIntroducedintheIntroductiontoMechanicalPart1course,named selectionsareawayofgroupingsimilargeometryorfiniteelemententities. Inthissectionwetakeacloserlookatdefiningnamedselectionsandsome moreoftheusesforthem. Beforegoingintonamedselectionsitwillbeusefultoreviewtheselect capabilitiesinMechanicalsincenamedselectionsarecreatedorbegunby directselection.

Selectcapabilitiesaredependentontheentitytypebeing selected(geometryormeshitems): ForGeometryitems(vertex,edge,face,body):
Singleselectorboxselect. Extendtoadjacentorlimits(tangentedgesandfacesareadded toselection). ExtendtoConnection,usedinfluid/structureanalyses,see documentation. ExtendtoInstance:ifinstancedentitieswerecreatedin geometry(e.g.abodyisreplicatedxtimes),theinitialselection willextendtotheinstances.

ForMeshitems(nodes):
Meshmustbedisplayed Singleselectorboxselectwithoptions. Boxselect=rectangularselectregion. Lassoselect=arbitrary(freehand)selectregion. BoxorLassoVolumeselect=sameselectregionbuttheselect penetratesthroughthevolumeintheviewingdirection.

Example:BoxSelectselectsnodeson surfacesfacingtheviewingdirection (viewingdirectionshownbyarrow).

NamedSelectionsmustbehomogeneousgroups.Alledges,allbodies,all nodes,etc..Youcannotmixentitytypeswhencreatinganamedselection. Thereareseveralwaystocreateanamedselection: Directselections:
Graphicallyselectentitiesandcreateanamedselection.

Criteriaselections:
Variouscriteria(e.g.size,location,type,etc.)areenteredinaworksheet creatingasetofinstructionsbywhichnamedselectionsaretobeconstructed.

Directnamedselectionscanbecreatedinseveralways:
UsingtheNamedSelectioniconinthecontexttoolbar RightclickingandInsert>NamedSelectionfromthegraphicswindoworthe NamedSelectionbranch.

Itisconvenient,butnotrequired,topreselecttheitemsandthendefinethe namedselection.

OncecompletedanewnamedselectionappearsundertheNamedSelections branchandcanberenamedifdesired.

C.CriteriaNamedSelection
WorksheetCriteriaisenteredinrowsandcolumnsintheworksheet.
WhenanewworksheetopensthefirststepistoRMBtoAddRow. Subsequentrowscanbeaddedtothelistorinsertedmidlist(order matters!).

Asrowsareaddedtotheworksheet columnsareconfiguredusingdropdown menusavailablebyclickingthedesired cell.

Rowscanbemadetemporarilyinactiveusingthecheckboxcolumnontheleft. Followingnamedselectiongeneration,thedetailsshowtheresult. ToviewthenamedselectiontoggletotheGraphicstabatthebottomofthe worksheet.

A newnamecanbeenteredfortheNamedSelection. Applygeometryofsame:willdefineanewcriteriabasednamedselectionwith thefirstworksheetrowpredefinedtomatchsize,typeand/orlocationofthe selection. Note:Applyselectedgeometry:resultsinanewdirectnamedselection.

Accesstothismatchingsection ofthisdialogisonly availableif asingleentityisselected.
