EXPERIMENT NO 12: Calculation of overall heat transfer coefficient of performance

APPARATUS: Recirculating Air Conditioning Unit

PROCEDURE: Remove the stop from the slot from the damper of air Recirculating unit
and set the damper to give 100% recirculation. Switch on the Air Recirculating Unit
Apparatus after taking care of all necessary precautions. Switch on the 0.5kW pre-heater
and adjust the fan at a moderately high speed. Allow the unit to run until the temperature
of the air circulating in the duct stabilizes. Insert the values in the table of observations.
CALCULATIONS:

Overall heat transfer coefficient of performance U = V (I - If) / (Td - Ta) L Wm-1k-1

(I)

TABLE/OBSERVATIONS:

2 23 27.6 230 5.2 0.7 68.18

3 23 28.2 230 4.6 0.7 52.28

SPECIMEN CALCULATIONS:

When the temperature stabilizes, the heat loss from the duct is equal to the
energy input to the heater and fan. So
U (Td - Ta) L= V (I - If)

Overall heat transfer coefficient of performance

Length ‘L’ of duct is taken as 1 m.
