Chapter 1. Candy Quantity Take-Off Introduction
QTO provides fast and accurate measurement from 2D and 3D drawings. Bills of
Quantities can be created directly in QTO or existing Bills of Quantities can be seamlessly
updated for progress or final quantities
Requirements
There are basic requirements to use QTO:
to have a Bill of Quantities set up in the Candy job
to have a basic knowledge of Candy
to understand the principles of measurement
5
Chapter 2. Importing a Bill of Quantities
Before importing a bill from excel first create a Company and Job.
Do this
6
Double Click on the “QTO Training Company” to access it.
Browse to the removable disc and double click on the “QTO- Ventshaft &
Substation Contract” job.
7
Recover the Backup
Double Click on “QTO Ventshaft & Substation Contract” to access the job.
8
2.2 Creating a Take-off package
QTO Manager
QTO Manager is the place where Take-offs are created, stored, renamed, deleted,
accessed and where the quantities from the Take-offs are copied back to the Candy
Bill of Quantities.
Take-offs should be organised in a structured hierarchy such as below.
Do this
9
Create a New Take-Off by clicking on . Give the new QTO Package apackage
code and take-off description
10
The new Take-off package is created and ready to be used.
11
Chapter 3. Candy QTO Layout
Candy QTO is an external software application which can be accessed from within Candy.
Once a Take-off package is selected in Candy the system will launch Candy Quantity Take-off.
This specific Take-off package was accessed from the job “QTO- Ventshaft & Substation
Contract”, so the Bill of quantities is already available in QTO.
12
Chapter 4. Updating the BOQ
Bill items have to be created in Candy first and then updated in QTO for the new Bill items to
appear on the QTO Bill. The same has to be done to delete items from the QTO Bill. Delete
the items in Candy and then update the QTO Bill.
An addendum to the original Bill of quantities can be imported into Candy. These new Bill
items will have to be measured seeing as they don’t have a Bill Quantity in place.
Do this
Browse to the removable flash disc and double click on the “QTO Excel addendum” to open
the Excel file.
13
Copy and Paste
Once the Excel addendum file is open, select the section that needs to be copied to Candy.
(Right Click > Copy)
Use any Bill document in Candy to paste the Excel selection. (Right click > Paste)
14
The column identifier dialog box appears. Identify the Page number, Item number,
Description and Unit. Click the item in the list on the left that identifies the column under the
big grey arrow.
The arrow will move to the next column once identified. Click “Continue” when completed
15
A dialog box will appear asking whether the new items should be imported to the specified
page. This dialog box will only appear if a page number was specified. Click on “OK”.
The Bill import status indicates that 9 items have been imported.
16
The new Bill items have been imported to page 7 in the Candy Bill
Section Headings
In a Candy Bill a hierarchy of headings can be created, allowing easier navigation of the Bill by
opening and closing sections and generating summary pages in reports
All non-Bill items imported from an external file will be marked as comments. Many of these
can be converted to meaningful headings to improve the readability of the Bill.
Do this
Open a bill document by clicking on the icon on the toolbar. Change the comments ( )
on page 7 to a Level heading hierarchy ( from 2 to 5) by typing the number in the Level
column “L” (the first column). As the level changes, the line colour will change to the colour
for that level.
17
4.4 Update the QTO Bill
Now that the items have been created in Candy, the QTO Bill can be updated to display the
new Bill items.
Do this
The QTO can be updated by either clicking on the “Bill Items” button on the toolbar or
Right Click on the Bill of Quantities > Update > Bill Items
18
The Bill of Quantities will be exported from Candy and imported into QTO
Once imported the New items will appear on the Bill of Quantities.
19
Chapter 5. Drawings
Drawings are imported into QTO and resides within the “Drawings” tab. There is no limit as to
how many drawings can be imported into QTO and the Drawings tab will become a drawing
register for this take-off package.
Due to the size of drawing files, they are not saved inside QTO but are attached using the
file location. It is strongly suggested, (but not mandatory), that a separate directory be
made for all drawings.
QTO accepts drawings in the following file formats - PDF, DXF, DWG, DWF,
DWFX and TIF
20
Do this
21
After the drawing has been selected the PDF import window appears.
QTO gives users the option to select which page of a drawing to import and to change the
angle of rotation.
Click
Different pc’s might experience different loading times for drawings according to their
specifications
22
5.2 Calibrate the drawing
The scale is unknown in PDF format drawings and has to be calibrated. Select the
Calibration tool and click on the start point and end point of a known dimension. The
dimension must be entered in the dialogue box to establish the scale. A drawing has
only to be calibrated once.
Do this
The Page calibration dialog box appears stating that two points with a defined measurement
Use the dimension of 2000mm between gridline A and B by clicking on the start point on
gridline A and then clicking on the end point on gridline B.
23
The systems identifies the distance between the two clicks as 40.05mm
Click on
24
Chapter 6. Navigating QTO
QTO is customisable and gives users the freedom to move panels, change layouts and to
change viewing styles.
Floating Panels
Any panel can be undocked from the default location and moved anywhere on the
desktop or to another monitor. Multiple panels can be docked together in a “raft”
and then moved as a unit anywhere on the desktop or to another monitor.
25
Docking Panels
The panels are fastened and tabbed to the left hand side of the main window by
default. The guide diamond appears when the panel is dragged to another
location. The guide diamond, pictured below, is a visual assistance to re-dock the
panel
Reset panels
Go to Tools>Layout>Reset Layout
Each panel can be separated and moved around the screen to customise the
interface layout. Click and drag the panel tab, will move the panel onto any of the
layout options. Interface layouts can then be saved, closed, and restored.
Multiple monitors
It is preferable but not mandatory that two or more monitors are used. The drawing
panel must reside on the primary monitor but all other panels can be moved. Place
26
the cursor on the Title Bar and drag to move the panel to a position on another
monitor
6.3 Navigating drawings
Mouse Functions:
The mouse scroller (mouse wheel) can be used to zoom in and zoom out by
rolling it forward and backwards.
The mouse scroller can also be clicked (pushed down) to grab hold of a point on
the drawing. The drawing can be moved around the drawing panel just by moving
the mouse while holding down the scroller button.
Tool Buttons:
The tool buttons also help to navigate drawings. These tools can be preselected to appear on
the tool bar and can be customised
27
Chapter 7. Measuring Tools
QTO measurement tools are displayed vertically to the left of the drawing panel and
contain the tools required for measurement of drawings. These are displayed when a
drawing is opened and are different for 2D and 3D drawings.
Number Tool
Use the Number tool to count items such as windows, doors, openings,
manholes.
Length Tool
Use the length tool for linear measurements such as drainage trenches, pipework,
and perimeter work in general.
Area Tool
Use the Area Tool for measurement of an area.
Arc Tool
Use the Arc tool for measurement of circular work. Select the start point of the
curve, the end point and then any other point on the curve - this will give the
length of the arc or circumference and area of the segment or circle
28
Chapter 8. Measuring Areas
Measure folders are used to organise take-offs into specific areas or locations. These are
clearly referenced when the QTO quantities are transferred to the Candy Bill of Quantities.
Measure folders and Sub-folders can be created to your specific requirements. A Measure
folder can extend over multiple drawings. To display the Measure folders use the Measure
folder tab. Many Measure folders can be created and they will be listed in this panel
Adding a Folder
To make folders and sub-folders, Right-click in the Measure folder panel at the
required position of the folder structure.
Renaming a Folder
The default name for all folders that are created is “Measure folder”, highlight this
and rename.
29
Do this
Click on the “Measure Folder” tab. There will be a Measure Folder available by default.
30
Repeat this process and create two more folders named “Strip footings” and “Ground slab”
Note: At this stage we have a drawing in place and measure folders set up. We can now start
with our first take-off.
The take-off list is where the measurements are stored. A drop down list is available in the
take-off tab to select a Measure folder to which the specific measurement should be
grouped.
Do this
31
Once a measurement is taken it will be stored in the Strip footings measure folder until a
different Measure folder is selected.
A default quantity type can be pre-selected which will then be allocated to all measurements
until it is once again changed. If the quantity is not pre-selected the system will use the Final
quantity as the default quantity.
Note: A quantity type can also be selected for every individual measurement.
Do this
32
8.3. Using the Area tool
Used to measure the area of objects on drawings and is not limited to angular shapes. Due
to a grip point staying behind once clicked anywhere on the object it allows the user to
measure angular and circular areas if required. The Area tool is mainly used for measuring
areas but also records other dimensions like number and perimeter.
Do this
Click on the ”Area tool” icon to activate the Area measuring tool.
Select a starting point for the measure and click on the corners of the area to be measured.
33
Click on all the corners around the perimeter of the area to be measured. Right clicking will
end/stop the area tool and snap back to the starting point.
After using the Right click function to end the Area tool the measurement will appear in the
Take-off list.
34
The measurement name will always default to the measuring tool used, but this can be
overtyped.
Change the measurements name to “Strip footing – Foundation Layout”. The
measurement name is also used for referencing purposes.
Open the Heading of the measurement by clicking on the icon to the left of the
measurement name.
35
Once the measurements heading has been opened it shows all of the dimensions that is
attached to that one measure.
Continuing a measurement
Only a portion of the strip footings has been measured and the rest also needs to be added
to the same measurement.
Do this
Click on the “Continue Tool” to activate the Area tool and continue measuring the strip
footings
36
Note: The continue tool will have to be used multiple times on the measurement to capture
all of the different portions of the strip footings to the same measurement. All of the strip
footings will now total to one total quantity.
Fixing Mistakes
Mistakes are easy to make, but just as easy to fix. Every measurement consist of grip points
which are created every time a click is for a measurement.
A common mistake in a measurement is clicking on the wrong line or accidentally clicking
Clicking on the perimeter line of the measurement will activate the grip points.
37
Grip points can be seen as blue blocks on the measurement and are numbered from the first
click to the last. Grip points can be added, deleted or moved
38
Grip points can be moved by simply clicking on the grip point once, as the mouse is moved
the grip point will also move (No need to hold the Left click while moving the mouse)
Once the grip point is moved to the correct location a Left Click will place that grip point on
that specific location and the measurement is fixed.
39
8.4 Attaching Bill items to a measurement
The next step is to use the measured dimensions to create quantities in the bill. The Bill
of Quantities needs to be displayed so that bill items can be dragged onto the take-off.
Do this
To add a Bill item to a measurement make sure that both the Bill of Quantities panel
and the Take-off list is visible.
Left click in the Record Row selector for Item A, C30 Concrete in strip footings.
Drag and drop the item anywhere on the measurement in the Take-off list.
40
Once the item is dropped on the measurement it will appear on the Take-off under the
expandable heading “Items”.
8.5 Variables
Variables will be required in the measurement to calculate the correct quantity for
multiple Bill items using one take-off measurement. The internal area of a building will
give the area of the floor and ceiling but would need a variable (thickness) to calculate
the volume of concrete in the surface bed.
Variable properties
A variable is made up of five fields:
Name:
This is the reference which identifies the variable from others in the take-off, it
can be as brief as H (for height) or T (for thickness), the reference is user defined
and will be used in formulae (explained below).
Value:
The variable may have a simple value or the value may be derived from
a formula (explained below). A simple value is entered in this cell.
Unit:
For reference purposes the unit type is entered here.
Formula
When a formula is used to calculate the variable value the formula is entered
here. Formulae can use Dimension names, Variables and support mathematical
41
functions such as sine, cosine and tangent. Only variables above the variable
being entered can be used in the formula.
It is also possible to Copy and Paste formula from a variable previously
entered which can then be revised.
Do this
Right Click in the measurement area displays a drop down box. Select Add. Repeat this
process if more than one Variable needs to be created.
42
Define the Variable as “Depth” with a value of 0.30 m by typing into the relevant boxes.
The Dimensions and Variables can now be used to calculate the quantity for the item C30
Concrete in strip footings.
Drag and Drop the dimension ”Area” into the formula box for the Bill item
43
Also Drag and Drop the variable “Depth” into the formula box.
The system will automatically bring op a selection box to choose which mathematical
function to use.
44
The volume of concrete is calculated in the Take –off list and the Bill quantity is updated on
the BOQ in the Bill of Quantiities panel
45
Chapter 9. Updating measured quantities in Candy
Now that a measurement has been measured in QTO, that quantity can be transferred to the
Candy Bill of Quantities.

Once the Template has been created, variables can be added to use with the template
53
The folder to which this measure will be grouped can also be defined
Select Bases in the Folder drop down menu
Bill items can also be attached to a template for ease of measuring. Every time that the
template is used for a measurement, the bill items will already be attached to the
measurement, eliminating the process of having to relink bill items to each repetitive
measure.
Do this
From the record row selector, Drag and drop Item D, C25 Concrete in bases onto the
Template.
54
10.2 Measuring from Templates
To measure from a template, drag the template name onto the drawing and then
continue the measure as described previously. When the measurement is complete
go to the Take-off tab where the measurement is recorded and all quantities will
have been updated. The default name on the take-off list will be the name of the
Template that was used, it is important to change the name of this take-off to
identify where the measurement came from
55
Do this
Left click in the record row selector next to the template “Bases”. Drag and Drop
the template onto the drawing panel. Once dropped, the Numbering tool will
become active and the take-off can start.
56
Once all of the bases have been counted and the right click function used to end the
Numbering tool, the measurement will appear on the Take-Off list in the Bases
Measure Folder

Drag and drop the relevant Dimensions and Variables into the Items formula box
The QTO Bill of Quantities stays updated with each and every measure.
62
Chapter 12. Multiple Bill items to one measure
There are no limits to the number of bill items that can be attached to one
measurement. Using the different dimensions and variables one can measure different
Bill Items with one Take-off. An example could be measuring the area of a room. The
area with the correct variables can be used for items such as slabs and tiling, but
remember that the perimeter is also captured on that same measurement and combined
with the correct variables it can be used for cornices, plaster and paintwork.
Do this
Click in the record row selector in line with Item F, Vertical formwork to sides of
foundations. Hold the left click and Drag & Drop the item onto the measurement in
the take-off list.
63
Two items are now attached to the same measurement.
