Best Practices to Ensure Reliability and Security
(Teaching and Learning Technologies, K. Tally 2009, 7.3)
TAB ‐ Content
Title: The Name of the Exam or Quiz
Subtitle: (For example:) Click here to begin the Quiz or Exam. Read the instructions carefully before you begin.
Note: Click on the ‘Advanced’ radio button before following the settings’ recommendations.
TAB ‐ Access
User Tracking – For assessments it is a good idea to
set user tracking to ‘Students Only’. This provides
back up information about login date and time when
a student reports an interruption in web connection
and requests to reattempt the assessment.
View Restrictions: Set to ‘Students’ and ‘All Teams’
so all students in all teams can access the exam.
Start and End Date: These dates usually do not need
setting, and they are often confused with the Delivery
Settings dates/times on the Interaction tab
(described later). Access refers to the assessment
being visible to the students; so after they have
completed their submission, they can log into the
course, click on the link and review the questions,
correct answers and feedback after the quiz is
completed (i.e. an assessment could be set to be
viewable for an entire semester or when the module
or unit opens until the end of the semester for
review. TIP – To avoid confusion about when
midnight occurs, use 11:55 pm or 12:05 am instead.
Internet Security: Browser Security – should be set
to ‘Medium – disable right‐click, print, etc.’
TAB ‐ Interaction
If the quiz or assessment has multiple attempts and is being used as an interactive study tool, these Interaction
Recommendations should be disregarded. (For review purposes, it would benefit the students to have the
Question Set Defaults randomized for both the questions and the answers.)
Delivery Settings: Date Enabled and Disabled –
Interaction dates are set so students MUST
complete the assessment during a specified
time period. In the example to the left, they can
take the quiz anytime after 8 a.m. on October 1,
but will not be able to take the quiz after
October 3 at 11:55 p.m. They can however,
access the quiz results because the access dates
are extended to allow review, as previously
described.
Display Setting: Display Mode – When choosing
a display mode, consider the length of the
assessment (i.e. screen shots could be taken of
the entire exam if it fits on one screen and
printed). Deliver one question at a time. For
grouped content that you want to display
sequentially, create question sets and have
each question set delivered at a time.
Question Set Defaults – Randomizing the order
in which questions are delivered and the order
of each question’s answer options reduces the
chance of students writing down the question
numbers/answers and sharing that information
with students who have not yet taken the test.
Note: If the flow of the questions delivered is
important, do not randomize the order of the
questions, just the responses.
Submission Settings:
1. Enter the number of ‘Attempts Allowed’.
2. Validation – Allow, but issue warning = Warns students if there are unanswered questions, but still allows
them to submit the assessment. Show save button should be checked (this may help if a student has an
interruption in their internet connection and saved answers prior losing their connection).
3. Time Settings: It is recommended that a time limit be set for any assessment with one attempt to discourage
discussion about the questions among peers.
4. Allow a 5 minute Time Warning for 30‐60 minute assessments with an additional 5 minutes for each added
hour.
5. Check the ‘Automatically submit assessment when time expires’. If this box is not checked, the student can
continue in the exam even if a time limit has been set by the instructor.
TAB – Review
Results Review:
1. View Submission History, choose ‘Full Review’ (the ‘list only’ function does not apply to Feedback Options).
2. Display Feedback – Choose ‘Assessment Completion’. It is important that the students receive some level of
feedback after they have completed the assessment. Remember, in the past, feedback from an assessment was
not provided when they submitted a quiz or exam unless it was self‐graded in a F2F classroom.
3. Feedback Options: It is recommended for assessments that are open for more than a few hours, that
feedback be limited to: ‘Overall score’, ‘Points awarded and Points possible’, until the assessment closes,
which are the dates on the Interaction Tab – Date Enabled and Disabled. Providing students with the boxes
checked above communicates their level of success on the assessment without providing the correct answers
which could be shared with other classmates, creating an advantage to students who have not yet taken the
assessment.
4. It is recommended that when the test window expires (Interaction Tab – Date Enabled and Disabled) faculty
change the Feedback Options to include all the feedback options by checking all of the boxes. It would be good
practice to email the students letting them know ‘Full Review’ for the test is now available. Since the Start and
End Date under the ‘Access’ tab allows the students to continue to access the assessment, they can log in after
you have changed the review to include all the Feedback Options and review the entire assessment, with the
added options of: Right or wrong, Feedback text, Answer key, Question text, and User response.
