AC Hi - Po t Te s t i n g
AC Hi-Pot Testing detects gross installation defects by causing a low-energy breakdown with minimal damage. In both respects it is superior to the 24 hr. Soak Test, which is not as sensitive to serious defects, and the power follow-through current can cause severe damage, complicating repairs. When combined with PD testing, AC Hi-Pot Testing is a powerful tool that can help ensure long system life. Provides elevated electrical stress appropriate for defect detection, yet safe for healthy insulation. Test frequency 20 Hz to 300 Hz Recommended high-potential test level ranges from 1.25 U0 up to 2.5 U0 Meets national and international industry standards

HV Cable Commissioning / Ma i n t e n a n c e O p t i m i z a t i o n
The primary objective of a commissioning test is to check the integrity of the main insulation of individual system components as well as the quality of the installation. By applying an AC over voltage continuously for a period of 60 minutes, latent defects may be identified via partial discharge testing before the cable is placed in commercial service. Kinectrics is uniquely qualified to perform Hi-Pot qualification and proof of function tests on high voltage power cables, and now offers testing services using an advanced high power Mobile Resonant Power Supply system rated 260 kV at 83 amps for transmission class cable lines. Kinectrics testing services encompass cables with extruded insulation and high-pressure self-contained fluid-filled (HPFF) cables as well as the associated accessories.

Kinectrics variable RTS - the only commercially available system of its kind in North America - is capable of performing post-installation tests on transmission class XLPE cables (83 A at 260 kV). Kinectrics RTS is also equipped with state-of-the-art partial discharge (PD) detection equipment to identify incipient cable system flaws. High-frequency PD signals are subjected to significant attenuation and dispersion. To ensure proper signal coverage, Kinectrics performs a PD measurement at every cable joint and termination. Kinectrics RTS is designed to meet the challenge of commissioning testing for long lengths of HV transmission cable, i.e. supply power sufficient to energize cable at voltages up to 1.7 U0 with 20 Hz to 300 Hz per IEC standards 60840 and 62067. Kinectrics RTS has carried out successful AC Hi-Pot and PD testing on the longest 345 kV HV underground XLPE cable ever commissioned in the U.S.

Partial Discharge (PD) testing is a predictive/diagnostic test used to identify problems (defects within cable terminations and joints/splices). PD testing can be done on-line, either in service during a Soak Test, or off-line during an AC Hi-Pot test. Early detection of partial discharges can help utilities avoid costly high-energy cable failures. Comprehensive Partial Discharge testing services by Kinectrics: Expert operation, monitoring and data interpretation Individual assessment of joints and cable sections Non-invasive and intrinsically safe testing Calibration for factory testing and shorter cable lengths PD source location technology pinpoints the exact location of defects Meets national and international industry standards
