USS CORONADO (LCS 4) GOLD

The Crown of the Fleet

Gold Crew Family Newsletter
Autumn 2013 Issue 3

The Commissioning date is set! USS CORONADO will be commissioned on April 5th at Naval Station North Island at the Carrier Piers. I was fortunate enough to be onboard USS CORONADO during the Acceptance Trials and she performed superbly. It is certainly different to speed along at 43 knots for 4 hours and not really notice/feel like you are moving that fast through the water. Most all propeller ships shake quite a bit as they reach speeds upwards of 30 knots. The water jet propulsion system onboard USS CORONADO just makes you smile when you easily attain higher speeds without all the shaking. I would like to congratulate two of our Sailors for being selected for promotion to Chief Petty Commanding Officer CDR M. Shawn Johnston Officer recently. Information Technician Chief (ITC) Stacy Smith and Gunners Mate Chief (GMC) Jason Kelly finished their final six weeks of training and had their anchors pinned on them during a brief ceremony on September 13th at Breakers Beach on Coronado. The morning was a beautiful, sunny Southern California morning (with no Marine layer!) Please congratulate them the next time you see them and admire their new Chiefs anchors. Our schedule continues to populate with events. All of our crew will have opportunities to travel to Mobile, AL to the shipyard (Austal USA) in the coming months. We are anticipating having about a 12-Sailor Crew 204 presence in Mobile from early December until the anticipated Sail away of USS CORONADO from the building yard in late January. We should have about 18 Sailors onboard for the Sail around with a targeted arrival date in San Diego of March 10th. Our first on-hull period on USS CORONADO will commence shortly after the commissioning in April. We are slated to conduct Developmental tests of the Surface Warfare Mission Package (30 mm guns, SH-60R helicopter, 11m small boats) while on-hull along with some core sea frame testing and rehearse for the Final Contract Trials (an INSURV inspection) set for late July 2014. This will be the first Surface Warfare Mission Package testing onboard an INDEPENDENCE variant LCS. Exciting stuff.

Hello CORONADO GOLD families! There is a lot of exciting things in our near future; I hope you all are ready. Within the coming months many of our sailors will be making trips across the country and some will even get a chance to sail around with the ship. Whether your sailor is here or not, remember that the command and I are always here to support you. As you may know, my husband and I are expecting our second child in late November. Because I will be in the hospital for a few days, CMC's wife, Chandra, is your point of contact while I am recovering. Please bear with me during this time if it takes a little longer to get back to you via email. If there is an emergency please call. I will try to inform you of when I will be out when I get that information. In addition to the Blogspot page, I am also starting a Facebook account. I will be sending an invitation to your email address or you can nd me at https://www.facebook.com/usscoronadogold.ombudsman.
