Museum
Our museum is located in the former Lunatic Asylum.
Its atmosphere evokes the oppressive world of its inmates.
Items from our collections are displayed as elements
of the ‘Port Arthur machine’, an institution intended to
“grind rogues honest”.
Convict Study Centre
For people who are researching their family history, the
Study Centre provides computer terminals with access to
the database of convicts and free people who passed through
Port Arthur. The Centre also includes a reading area where
visitors can relax and peruse reference books on convict ships
and convict records.
Family Activities
The free Family Activity book contains games and other activities
to help you and your children explore and enjoy the site.
Memorial Garden
We invite you to visit the Port Arthur Memorial Garden,
dedicated to the victims of the 1996 tragedy.
Summer Activities
• In January Port Arthur becomes a stage. Roar your support
as brave convicts resist a brutal overseer in The Shingle
Strike. Have your heart-strings tugged by The Man Who
Threw a Stone, the tragic story of a Peninsular War veteran
who starved himself to death.
• Our gardens are at their splendid best from November to
January. Take a guided tour through extensive fragrant
flower gardens and hear the stories of the men who
planted them.
• During January you can get your hands dirty and uncover
Port Arthur’s hidden secrets as part of Australia’s only
regular public archaeological program.
