This issue differs from issue 11 in that the standard no longer applies to new designs. For new designs, standards STD 5051,16 (Volvo Group) and VCS 5051,159 (Volvo Car Corporation) shall be used.

1 Scope and field of application

The standard applies to direct marking on parts. In relevant parts, it may also be used for indirect marking, such as marking of packages. If the manufacturer needs to make his own marking, for example to facilitate handling, this can be accepted by Volvo on condition that the function of the part is not jeopardized. It shall be placed totally separated from Volvo's marking. The suppliers' own marking shall be approved by Volvo.

1 Omfattning och tillmpning

Standarden gller fr direkt mrkning p artiklar men kan i tillmpliga delar anvndas vid indirekt mrkning som t.ex. frpackningsmrkning. Om leverantren har behov av viss egen mrkning, fr att t.ex. underltta hanteringen, kan detta accepteras av Volvo under frutsttning att artikelns funktion inte ventyras. Den skall placeras vl skild frn Volvos mrkning. Leverantrens mrkning skall godknnas av Volvo.

2 General
On drawings the marking is given as follows: The marking symbol consists of a square. It is placed so that its diagonals are parallel to the sides of the drawing. The surface onto which the marking shall be applied is shown with a leader line drawn from one of the corners of the square. The leader line terminates in an arrow or a point as shown by the example in figure 1. If several different markings have been indicated, they can be marked by a digit in the symbol for marking as shown by the example in figure 1. If the marking area shall be drawn, this must be indicated with a thick chain line. It shall be dimensioned where required in accordance with the example in figure 1.

If the marking text is to be read in a specific direction, an arrow showing the direction of reading shall be indicated, see figure 1. In addition to this, the number of lines necessary for marking can be written out in full (when deviating from section 7) or when colour requirements are given (see section 8). See section 11 for examples of marking.

3 Marking methods

The dimensions listed in the table refer to the letter or digit size in the tool. Thus, they are not equivalent to the size of the actual marking obtained on the part. Values marked in bold italic shall be preferred. Parts exposed to dirt, underseal or similar should have a minimum text height of 4 mm for reasons of readability. Normally, the combination 6/4 for H1/H2 should be used for such parts. Should this combination not be possible due to lack of space, a text height of 4 mm shall be specified. This must, however, be written out in full, e.g. 1 HPS-4 (alla uppgifter/all information). It is recommended that the minimum length of the VOLVO logotype is 25 mm.

8 Colours
The VOLVO logotype must always be represented in one of its corporate colours: Volvo blue, black, white, or silver (silver only for certain particular applications). For a correct representation of the Volvo corporate colours, the colour swatches included in the Corporate Identity Manual (issued 1997) must be used. The purchasing department concerned is responsible for providing colour swatches to the supplier. If no colour requirement has been specified on the drawing, the marking text shall be applied "colourless" (in the case of marking methods 1, 2 or 6). If the drawing specifies one single colour (black or white), this refers to the colour of the text and the surrounding surface is "colourless" (= substrate colour). If a combination of two colours is specified in accordance with below, the first colour refers to the colour of the text, and the second to the colour of the surrounding surface/substrate (signs, plates, labels, decals, etc.) If "Optional colour" has been specified for marking method 3 or 4 (marking plates, labels and similar), one of the following combinations of text/substrate shall be used: blue/white alt. silver black/white white/blue silver/blue white/black

In the case of marking method 5 (punching) and if no colour has been specified, the marking shall be carried out in a colour, the contrast of which to the substrate makes it easy to read. If the VOLVO logotype shall be applied onto a surface that is uneven or patterned, the marking shall be applied in a smooth plate to increase the legibility. This plate shall be big enough to house the entire marking text (e.g. Method 1.3). The colour regulations applicable to the VOLVO logotype, apply also to the trademarks VOLVO PENTA and VOLVO AERO in their respective logotype. The colour required for the VOLVO logotype also applies to the rest of the marking text.

9 The VOLVO logotype

The Volvo name and trademark are legally protected. The logotype in which the trademark VOLVO is used is specially designed for us. A correct representation of the VOLVO logotype helps keeping this protection and is thus an absolute requirement. Reproduction may only be carried out using the proper original which is to be found in the Corporate Identity Manual. If required, the original can be obtained from the respective purchasing unit The VOLVO logotype has a fixed graphic form, and the distances between the letters must never be changed. The logotype may not occur in running text or be changed by the addition of text, pictures or symbols. When the logotype is reproduced by casting, punching, embossing, etching or engraving, the letters shall be filled and evenly raised against an even substrate.

A simpler trademark design is permitted on free vulcanised rubber hoses for manufacturing reasons. See STD 5052,21. Exemption may also be given for simplified marking on other materials if special reasons exist. Exemption is obtained from the relevant purchasing unit.

10 Text style for the other text

Lower case letters shall normally be used with an upper case initial letter. The text may, however, be written in upper case letters if this is better from a technical point of view. "Helvetica Medium" or other similar linear (grotesque) type shall be used (e.g. in accordance with DIN 1451).

12 Interim regulations
Table 7 gives a cross reference from old designations to the new system of designation. The transition to the new ways of writing date of manufacture can suitably be carried out when changing tools. This shall be done even if the indication on the drawing has not been altered. This transition is, namely, no reason for revision and alterations of this kind are not introduced until some other change is made.

The names of the entities agree with the names in English given in STD 9122,3. The list in this appendix has also been supplemented with Great Britain which is approved by US Customs for use as name of country of origin. The list of entities in this appendix is based on the list included in the "United Nations Standard Country or Area Code for Statistical Use" established by the Statistical Office of the United Nations. The names of the entities correspond to those given in the United Nations' "Terminology Bulletin", issued by the Department of Conference Services. Some additional entities are included with a view to providing more complete global coverage.
