Fall festival returns with music, jousting , and free food

As the weather turns colder,
classes become still more mo-
notonous, and the next break
from school seems eternally far
away, the idea of “fun” seems
more and more foreign to many
Speed students. In fact, the con-
cept of “fun” and “school” to-
gether may seem to be an oxy-
moron. However, for fellow
schoolmates, “fun” is making its
triumphant return to Speed
School this week because Fall
Festival is coming up.
Fall Festival will take place
this Thursday, October 26 from
11AM-3PM on the lawn in front
of the J.B. Speed Building. This
event, hosted annually by the
Speed School Student Council,
provides a break from school
for students to enjoy them-
selves as they trudge from
class to class. If for nothing
else, stop by Fall Festival for a
free lunch. As usual, the coun-
cil members will be grilling hot
dogs and hamburgers, in addi-
tion to the chips and drinks that
will be served.
But don’t let the attraction of
free food be the only reason to
stop by. This festival will also
be featuring blow-up jousting
matches and an inflatable box-
ing ring. These two exciting ac-
tivities might help in easing the
frustration caused by Thursday’s
EAC quiz. Challenge a friend to
a match in the ring or get medi-
eval on a rival in a duel. Students
can also show off their physical
prowess in the pumpkin throw-
ing contest. See how far you can
chuck the gourd or just come and
laugh as fellow classmates at-
tempting to show off their
strength in this competition.
Even if running around and
hitting your friends with inflat-
able jousting poles or watching
your fellow students make fools
out of themselves trying to chuck
a pumpkin doesn’t appeal to you,
Fall Festival is an event designed
to meet and mingle with fellow
Speed-sters. Come and get to-
gether with other freshmen, as
well as upperclassmen and
Speed faculty. It’s a great way to
get to know people who can help
you when it comes to figuring out
your schedule, as in what classes
and which professors to take and
the ones to avoid. Show up and
have a good time with your
friends, enjoy the atmosphere,
listen to the music, and just have
fun. This event has always been
greatly loved by Speed students
in the past, and this year prom-
ises yet another great time.

Inking up some professors Assassins to start on

What do tablet PC’s and pho-
tographs of two EAC professors
have in common? The new Fresh-
man Council InkArt contest.
This new contest is directly
linked to the new professor spot-
light which can be found on the
back page of this edition. The
first professors interviewed
were Dr. Tyler and Dr. Ralston.
The contest is simple, just
browse to ww.speedcouncil.org
and download the InkArt files
attached to the event or email
freshman.speed@gmail.com with the
subject line Request InkArt to
have the files emailed to an ad-
dress. Then draw all over the
pictures using a tablet PC in
InkArt.
To submit the files, email them
to freshman.speed@gmail.com with
the subject line Submit InkArt
and include in the body a first
and last name. Be sure to keep
all submissions appropriate.
The contest will run through
November 3 and a winner will be
posted in the Internet and pub-
lished in the next edition of the
Freshman Speed Feed.

Assassins is a simple strategic game that consists of a
group of people and contracts. Yes, it's safe - physical harm is
not part of the play. Instead, the nature of the game is to:

2. More importantly, stay in the game.

cial about teaching at Speed
School?
Dr. Tyler: I believe teaching
was my calling in life. I enjoy
teaching at Speed School; I have
the pleasure to teach engineer-
ing calculus with real life engi-
neering applications to engi-
neering students. Most other
universities do not have pro-
grams where the engineering
programs have their own sepa-
rate core content classes.
Dr. Ralston: Many chose to
teach the higher level courses
working with graduate students
and upperclassmen, but I per-
sonally prefer teaching under-
graduate students because it is
an opportunity for me to make a
positive influence on future en-
gineers. It is very rewarding to
have the opportunity to influ-
ence young people as they are
making critical decision in their
lives.
Q: What is your favorite all time
movie?
Dr. Tyler: I would have to say
that my favorite movie is Music
Man.
Dr. Ralston: I would definitely
have to say the Wizard of Oz.
Q: What is your favorite food?
Dr. Tyler: I love Steak
Dr. Ralston: I like spinach and
I like yogurt, but not together,
mind you.
Q: What would you say is your
favorite restaurant?
Dr. Tyler: Hold on, I’ve got it!
White Castle! I don’t really eat
out much, but I would say I like
steakhouses. I can eat steak
everyday.
Dr. Ralston: I like Qdoba.
Q: What is your favorite sports
car?
Dr. Tyler: I would say that I
like the Corvette.
Dr. Ralston: I don’t really have
a favorite car, but I really like my
new Passat.

your free time?
Dr. Tyler: Making up tests for
EAC101!
Dr. Ralston: I like to tandem
ride with my husband. We are
athlete “wannabees” We like to
hike, swim and run.
Q: Are you a Cardinal’s fan?
Dr. Tyler: Absolutely! GO
CARDS! If I weren’t a cardinal
fan 47 years ago, I sure am NOW!
I have season tickets every year
for basketball and football
games.
Dr. Ralston: I love the CARDS!
Q: Do you have any hobbies?
Dr. Tyler: I like to play the
saxophone and the clarinet.
Dr. Ralston: I like to hike, bike
and swim. I like staying in shape.
Q: Where do you like to shop?
Dr. Tyler: I love being in auto-
mobile show rooms and elec-
tronic stores.
Dr. Ralston: I hate shopping;
it makes me sweat every time I
go to the store.
Q: How many members does
your family consist of? Are you
married?
Dr. Tyler: I am married and I
have one daughter who is mar-
ried to a doctor.
Dr. Ralston: I have two daugh-
ters; one is eighteen she goes to
Collegiate and the other one is
twenty she is at U of L in the
college of arts and science.
Q: Do you have any funny math
jokes?
Dr. Tyler: We have several
math jokes.
Dr. Ralston: EAC102 is full of
math jokes.
