%ndows &sta takes o(er the boot manager dutes that the boot.n fle used to fulfll

,nother ssue to be aware of when dual or mult bootng between %ndows &sta and
%ndows 1*/M53 s that when dong so/ "ou wll lose all %ndows &sta restore
ponts when "ou boot to %ndows 1*/M53 and then boot back nto %ndows &sta.
)hs s b" desgn to protect the ntegrt" of the %ndows &sta restore ponts.
*R+networks recommends usng &sta7oot*R+ to manage the boot entres for the
&sta boot manager.

I&PORT."T W.R"I"G 5OR .66 )S$RS8 %ndows &sta uses a new (erson
of the $)8! fle s"stem/ and thrd6part" parttonng software can therefore/ cause
serous errors when combned wth %ndows &sta. %e strongl" recommend that the
thrd6part" such as *artton Magc or ,crons s onl" used to create free space and
that %ndows .sk Management s used to create and format the actual partton.

we strongl" recommend that "ou do $+) attempt to load an" unsgned dr(ers durng

workarounds to ths restrcton/ but these ha(e no effect n the fnal release.
Windows ista Installation &ethods
7oot from .&. 'nstallaton Method ? )hs s the most popular method of
nstallng &sta. 8or the beneft of members downloadng ther cop" %ndows
&sta/ we pro(de some addtonal nformaton. !ee 7urnng the %ndows &sta
'!+ to .&. and note that most faled nstallatons are caused b" a bad burn. )o
reduce ths rsk *R+networks recommends that "ou set "our burn program to burn
the data to the .&. at a slow speed such as 21 or as slow as "our burner can go.
Run !etup from wthn %ndows ? !mlar to .&. Method. !etup s run from
wthn %ndows 1* b" nsertng the 'nstallaton dsc durng a normal %ndows
sesson.

7efore selectng B'nstall $owB close all open programs and close an" ant(rus or
ant6sp"ware blockng software/ ncludng securt" programs/ as these are known to
nterfere wth the nstallaton of %ndows &sta.

Install
$+)3: 8urther nformaton n respect of :pgradng and the use of the :pgrade
(ersons of %ndows &sta wll be pro(ded once the" are forthcomng from
Mcrosoft or our *R+networks communt" members and staff. 8or the tme beng we
wll therefore confne ths secton of our %ndows &sta 'nstallaton Jude to
co(erng an B'n6place upgradeB.
,s the maLort" of %ndows users are now runnng %ndows 1*/ our focus n ths
gude/ s on the upgrade from that to %ndows &sta.
)he ad(antage of an B'n6place upgradeB s that "ou can nstall %ndows &sta and
retan "our applcatons/ fles/ and settngs as the" were n "our pre(ous edton of
%ndows.
*R+networks recommends that as wth an" other upgrade/ users perform a full
backup n the e(ent the upgrade fals. .ocuments/ data and other tems "ou do not
want to rsk losng/ should be backed up to e@ternal meda or another partton or hard
dr(e.
)he upgrade procedure from %ndows 1* !*2 to %ndows &sta takes much longer
than a clean nstall of %ndows &sta. )he number of programs nstalled on the
s"stem to be upgraded/ as well as the relat(e performance of the s"stem are all
factors n the amount of tme t takes to complete the upgrade. 3@pect from 1 to 3
hours to complete the upgrade from %ndows 1* to %ndows &sta. $ot all s"stems
are the same/ nor does e(er"one run the same programs/ so the e@act amount of tme
cannot be accuratel" predcted.
)he ne@t (er" mportant step pror to upgradng %ndows 1* to %ndows &sta s to
download and run the %ndows &sta :pgrade ,d(sor to determne the upgrade
potental of the s"stem to be upgraded.
+nce users scan ther s"stems wth the %ndows &sta :pgrade ,d(sor/ an"
ncompatble programs reported can and should be unnstalled pror to startng the
upgrade se#uence. ,ll de(ce dr(ers reported as ncompatble 0e@cept for R,'. and
!,), dr(ers where applcable4/ should also be unnstalled. )he s"stem should then
be rebooted back to %ndows 1* n order to begn the upgrade process.

.r(er support for motherboard chpsets/ graphcs cards/ and other de(ces has been

go to the 7ootloader tab. !elect B:nnstall the &sta bootloaderB and clck ,ppl".

nstallaton dr(e/partton and select 8ormat. , BNuck formatB s fne.

"our folder optons to B!how hdden fles and foldersB and that "ou clear the check

a dual boot wth %ndows 1* for reasons of "our own. *erhaps "ou ha(e some older
hardware that s not supported/ or a program or game that won-t run n %ndows
&sta.
"OT$8 Check that Windows %P dri9ers for your system are a9aila1le from the
manufacturer of your system or from the mother1oard manufacturer 1efore
attemptinA to install Windows %P! In particular: if you are usinA an S.T. dri9e:

make sure that you ha9e Windows %P S.T. Controller dri9ers a9aila1le as they
may 1e necessary for Windows %P setup to 1e a1le to FseeF the partition on
which you intend to install it! This is an important step especially with new
6aptop and "ote1ook systems as well as O$& #esktop systems from
manufacturers like #ell: ,P and Gateway!
The fact that you do not ha9e a 1oota1le Windows ista ## with
such systems: may also limit the a1ility to successfully create a dual
1oot with Windows %P!

7ootloader tab/ select B%ndows &sta 7ootloaderB n the frst secton and B,ll
.r(esB n the second secton and then clck 'nstall 7ootloader . $e@t/ go to the
.agnostcs tem on the menu bar and select BRun .agnostcsB. &sta7oot*R+ wll
default back to the Manage +! 3ntres page and "ou wll see that "ou now ha(e
entres there for B3arler (ersons of %ndowsB as well as BMcrosoft %ndows

Install the ista 1ootloader
Restart "our s"stem and select the operatng s"stem "ou would lke to boot to.
