BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) is a proprietary Internet-based instant messenger application
included on BlackBerry devices which allows messaging between BlackBerry users. It was
developed by Research In Motion (RIM), maker of the BlackBerry device. Messages sent via
Blackberry Messenger are sent over the Internet and use the BlackBerry PIN system, so
communication is only possible between two BlackBerry devices.
The service requires the BlackBerry Internet Service to be able to function, and communicates
over the phone's Internet connection using either the mobile phone network or a wireless LAN
("Wi-Fi") connected to the Internet. Thus a user can exchange messages even where there is no
mobile phone network coverage provided that there is a wireless LAN accessible that allows the
phone access to the Internet.
Exchanging messages is also possible via dedicated discussion or chat groups, which allow
multiple BlackBerry devices to communicate in a single session. In addition to offering text-
based instant messages, BlackBerry Messenger also allows users to send pictures, voicenotes
(audio recordings), files, location on a map, and a wide selection of emoticons (also known as
"smileys") over the Blackberry network.
With the release of BlackBerry Messenger 5.0, BlackBerry allows users to use a QR Code to add
each other to their respective friends lists rather than using only numeric PIN identification or an
email address associated with the user's BlackBerry.
BBM was introduced globally in February 15, 2008, but introduction of the new interface in
April 2009 increased sales hugely.

To those who have one, its apparent that a
Blackberry is most definitely a Crackberry highly addictive. Besides having e-mail, Internet,
and a decent selection of apps, it also comes with Blackberry Messenger (BBM). Suddenly
texting is so 2007. Through BBM, you can have a conversation with other Blackberry users from
your device, with a faster turnaround time than texting. But this new system brings with it a new
set of rules and etiquette. When do you ping? What if hes not responding to you? And, most
importantly, can you still sext?
Here are some tips:
BBM is a great way to communicate with a potential love interest because its so
immediate. Its as convenient as texting, but theres a faster delivery and response rate ideal
for flirting. Because you have to have permission to BBM people, its a bit more intimate than
texting.
To get that closeness, its best to exchange PINs early on. If he whips out his Blackberry to take
your number, say something like, Oh whats your PIN? and add him right away. If you arent
sure if he has a Blackberry, just ask him during a period of high-texting activity. Hell
understand that its just easier and more convenient than texting. Plus, BBM is still something of
a novelty; since not everyone has it, most people are excited to find other users.
Once youve exchanged PINs, the general rule is that BBM is more like a phone or AIM
conversation. When texting you can just shoot a random message whenever you want; in BBM,
you should always start with a greeting. Use BBM when you have a specific topic to talk
about or youre making plans. Stick with texting when it comes to witty observations or, I was
just thinking about you type messages. Once youve started chatting on BBM, immediate
responses are expected. If that changes, a BRB or Gotta go, talk more later is absolutely
necessary. You can delay between texts without any explanation, but not BBM.
Yes, He Did Read Your Message
BBM also has one feature that texting just cant offer: it shows users when their sent messages
are delivered and then read. This is the best/worst/best again thing about BBM. Gone are the
days when a guy could say, What? I never got that text or Sorry, I passed out early last
night and just read this. Unfortunately that can be bad news for the ladies who are on the
sending side. Now youre faced with, well, evidence. Do you confront? Do you get feisty?
Just because a message is marked as read doesnt mean a response needs to come within
seconds. Sometimes people check a message just to get the red light on their phone to stop
flashing, but dont have time to actually respond to it. Before you freak out, ask yourself if he
has a car. Its so easy to check messages but nearly impossible to respond to them while driving.
Give it a little time. Be rational if its morning, give up until the afternoon when hes probably
had a few breaks. If its later in the day, give him until bedtime. If its a late-night booty BBM,
and he hasnt read it by last call, he very well could have called it an early night.
If too much time has lapsed, though, its important to be honest with yourself. Should you
continue to BBM him? Should you switch to texting and calling? No. You can take the hint and
file it under, Hes just not that into me. If he makes contact again, youre absolutely allowed to
call him on it. Dont act crazy; a simple, Hey, whats up? I didnt hear back from you
yesterday gets the point across. But again, if his explanation seems fishy, take the hint.
Some BBM Hacks
If you want to beat the system when it comes to him knowing whether or not youve read the
messages hes sending, you can sort of. If you see hes sent you a message, dont open it. Start
a new conversation with someone else (like a trusted girl friend). While youre chatting with her,
your message from him will flash across the bottom of the screen. You wont be able to read the
whole thing, but you can get an idea of what he wants without giving him the coveted R check
mark.
You can also use BBM to your advantage when you need to guard yourself against unwanted
attention. If a guy asks for your number at the bar, give him your pin instead. Then just dont
confirm his request to be added to your contacts. Whoops, sorry, buddy! If youd rather not give
it out at all, just play dumb. Oh yeah, I have BBM but I never use it. Let me get your number.
If a fling cant take the hint and keeps sending you messages despite the fact that youre just not
that into him, change your BBM status. Your status doesnt mean much you can still talk to
your friends no matter what it says but a simple SO BUSY! will give you a little bit of
protection.
If you really need to ditch someone, you can delete him from your contact list. Youll simply be
gone and he wont be able to contact you again. Its harsh, but it can be necessary at times. Even
if he has your PIN saved, hell have to request to be re-added. Its unlikely he will, but if hes
some sort of a masochist and does, you just dont have to confirm him.
Oh and the latest versions of BBM also make it possible to send a file right in the message
window. This means sexting is so on! And no need to worry that he got your naked pic, freaked
out, showed all his friends, and then decided never to talk to you again. He knows you know he
read it, so he has to give you immediate feedback. Both of your red lights will be blinking like
crazy.

BBM Application For Android and iPhone:
What Are The Rumors?
by Ozgur on April 19, 2011
Anyone who carries a mobile device of any type
has chatting and instant texting capabilities. This includes, of course, phones, iPods, electronic
mobile devices, and many other mobile Internet pieces. It will not be long before Internet will
come standard on all electronics. The one problem we have been faced with is the lack of instant
communication between friends who carry a BlackBerry, iPhone, and Android device. While
there have been free apps created that allow texting, videos, and photo capabilities between the
three devices, BlackBerry is about to release the BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) application for
better communication from the original instant messaging texting application.
While this application is free for BlackBerry devices and comes as a standard preload on
BlackBerry devices, it has been said BlackBerry may want iPhone and Android users to purchase
the app via a one time fee. The instant messaging application on a BlackBerry makes it easy for
the sender to know if the receiver has received the message. Even better, the sender is alerted
when the receiver has read the message. There is no more wondering if your message went
through or not!
Also rumored is that BlackBerry will only be making a basic version for Android and iPhone
users. While BlackBerry users can send text, video, and photos, other platforms will only be
allowed to send and receive text.
Imagine the next time you want to join a discussion with your BlackBerry friends on your
iPhone. When you start the conversation, your friends will be absolutely thrilled to have you
become a part of their world. Hopefully, these rumors will circulate into truth very quickly so
that what you have read turns from rumor to fun with other friends.
Though instant communication through texting and instant messaging on the go via your mobile
device provides many advantages to the entire world, it is not all greatness or peaches and cream.
Communication, which includes the ability to send information to other users with the same type
of device to friends, family, and others, there are limitations and disadvantages to mobile
chatting. The ability to talk to friends and business colleagues from anywhere, accessed by a
mobile device of any kind, may be over shadowed by the limitations it holds. However, newer
phones such as the iPhone and those using the Android will find they can overcome some of
these restrictions. With BBM become available to other platforms, it will open up a whole new
way of keeping in touch.
