Aviation
Last night in Brussels the European Parliament
finalised legislation that will exempt International
Aviators from mandatory inclusion in the EUETS.
This vote gives closure to uncertainty around the
inclusion of the aviation sector in the EUETS.
Flights within the eurozone will be included in the
cap and trade and scheme until 2020 at the very
least. This gives much needed certainty for the
relevant participants after much speculation about
the ICAO (International Civil Aviation
Organisation) formulating a global cap and trade
scheme for the aviation sector. Last September, the
ICAO, consisting of 190 Nations, committed to
build a global emission trading scheme by 2016.
However they refused to comply with the EUETS
in the meantime. The global scope of the EUETS
will reactivate in 2016 if no measures are
developed by the ICAO.
