ANUlAL SHLTZR
The residents of Chugiak must
have a reputation of being an-
imal a,overs of the highest de-
gree. This is the conclusion
one must dratt from the number
of umtanted cats and dogs that
bflve been deposited in our com
munity by passing motorists
during the past

:te imagine that those res?on
sible for this, regard tltem-
selves as being too "soft hear
ed
11
to dispose of their un-
wanted pets themselves, and ar
laboring under the delusion
that folks t.rho live "in the
country" ahr2rs have room for
another pet. In the past I
have heard a number of per-

they tually believe that by
this they are Biving
their no longer tielcome pets
a "50-50" c.hance of surviv{ll.
Actually the odd; are not
so good,. The bettlildered an-
imals \tander out in r'oad and
are run over; or in the case
of cats may be set upon by
dnfriendly dogs destroyed
or as most ah1ays happens,
the animals revert to the tti 1
status and become a menace to
everyone.
It is a very rare instance
that they find a happy home
"in the country."
It is difficult to Imou how
to impress this fact on the
guilty persons to make'
them realize that they are
by far kinder to take their
(next col.)
(animal shelter)
surplus livestock to the
pound, rather than sub-
ject them to the uncer-
tain fate of abandoament.
I must confess that your
tor was the victim of t '1c
misguided generosity of
ot these "kind hearted" per
sons this ueek \then a car
stopped at our mailbox and
tossed two kittens into the
waiting arms of our children.
These stray eats are the
lucky ones, they have found
a good home, but there are
a number of others that ,.,e
have heard bf who are not
as \telcome.
:te can ollty hope that
they wil1 someday realiie
that Ch1giak is not an an-
imal shelter, and that by
depositing their strays here
they are shifting the
respcnsibili ty of their de
struction to
