Chapter one
Thoughts about starting
I felt excited to:
get hands on experience in a nonprofit organization
Experience work as an Executive Director
Gain a broader understanding of administrative practices
and office dynamics
I felt challenged by:
Learning so much in a short period of time
Remembering details when communicating with funders,
board members and clients
Putting into practice the skills Ive learned in the classroom
Chapter two
Agency Context
Social Context Research has linked poor mental
and physical outcomes with poverty necessitating
programs to increase economic conditions.
National Context - Push for job readiness services as
a strength building solution to help communities in
poverty
Political Context Philadelphia has a high poverty
rate. Strong political push to find jobs for
underserved communities
My change in viewpoint
I better understand how context directly effects
funding, program strategy, client mindset and
outcomes.
Chapter three
Insight and actions that reflect on ethical
knowledge
Ethical dilemna: On of our students has struggled with behavioral problems
since entering school. Several teachers have written concerns about over
activity and obsessive behavior. He is also one of my students with a formal
learning plan. One day myself and two teachers and staff member were
watching this student and others play football. A conversation arose about
the student. One teacher, who didnt have the student in her class,
indicated how much she enjoyed the students work habits and helpfulness in
the dorm, the staff member concurred. The teacher who had him as a
student began to rebut the first two and disclose details of her problems in
the classroom and her ideas about his emotional problems. She then turned
to me to validate her point using the information I held from the students
formal evaluation.

My action: I stated that often students have strengths and limitations that can
cause them to react differently across varying platforms. I then turned the
conversation to his athleticism on the football field and changed the
conversation to something else. When the game was over, I talked with the
teacher alone about being able to talk privately if she needed to vent. I also
discussed the importance of maintaining student confidentiality.

communities
Primary interaction with individuals
I was very comfortable working with the students. Since the
program is voluntary and receive a stipend for participation, it
is very rare to come across uncooperative behavior.
Opportunity to work with families and the community
If I were employed I might be responsible for presenting the
program to churches, community centers and schools to
recruit students.
My Abilities
One place where my communication style has evolved over
the course of study is that I am much more cognizant of
recognizing strengths in people and communicating ways to
build upon them. Along with this, I understand the importance
of empowering people to define the change that they want
to see take place in their lives.
