From the
You'd think that people who work in higher education would get used
to arrivals and departures--every year, we have to say goodbye to
one class of graduates and then turn around almost instantly to wel-
come a new class of freshmen. But familiarity doesn't seem to make
farewells any easier.
Next week marks the retirement of Dana Irvin, who over the past 16
years has served as adviser to thousands of Honors College students.
Semester after semester, Dana has helped students sort our their
lives, deal with roommate issues, choose their majors and classes,
and make the kinds of life-changing decisions everyone has to make
during the course of their college careers. She has the uncanny abil-
ity to say the right word, provide the right glance, or just listen as if,
for that moment, the student is the only other person in the world.
All of us in the Honors College will miss her very much.
Please be sure to join us on Monday, September 8 from 3-4:30pm
in the Holmes Basement Honors Center for a reception to honor Dana
Irvin on the occasion of her retirement. We look forward to seeing
you there.

Are you looking for a fitness program that challenges your body and mind? Come try Karatedo
Doshinkan, a traditional school of karate.

Karatedo Doshinkan emphasizes a wide range of techniques and kata (series of techniques) that
provide a basis for self-defense and physical fitness. No experience is necessary. Clemson Uni-
versity students train for the first semester free of charge.

Instructor Dr. June Pilcher encourages those 17 years old and above to come try the trial classes.
The introductory sessions will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 pm on Mondays, Sept 1, 8, 15, & 29
and Thursdays, Sept 4, 11, 18, & 25 on the second floor in the Hendrix Center. Look for
people in white karate uniforms in the Meeting Rooms, Ballrooms, and the Dave Pebbles Room.
Contact Dr. Pilcher at jpilche@clemson.edu for more information or if you are interested but can-
not attend a trial class.
