TEXTUAL ANALYSIS

Gabrielle Aplin Panic Cord

Indie pop genre
Shot type and movement Still frame
filmed in a wide shot
Analysis
The wide shot allows the audience to see
the setting and location. Through this shot
the mise en scene is clearly seen where
fairy lights candles and a roaring fire is
shown this creates a romantic scene. The
way the couple are positioned in the
middle of the frame shows how they are
the centre of attention and allows the
audience to clearly understand their
relationship. The shot shown on screen
comes as a contrast to the lyrics as the
lyrics see the relationship in a negative
light. The casual clothing help show the
couples relationship and how they are
comfortable around each other and the
mood light yet again helps create a cosy
environment.
Interte!tuality is shown as the video is very
similar to "llie Gouldings video #our Song
as it is the same genre.

me(
"dit &any cuts and )ump cuts are used
throughout this scene to help create a
montage of the night and show the couples
relationship.
Shot type and camera movement
close up shot filmed with a hand held
camera.
Analysis
The close up shot filmed using a hand
held camera allows the audience to see
the closeness of the couple and intensify
their actions. The use of a close up does
not allow the audience to see the location
or setting of where this shot is filmed
therefore this adds to the close and
intense atmosphere and shows how the
couple are the main centre of attention.
*egarding the element of mise en scene
the way both characters are wearing
similar clothing +baggy )umpers, yet again
shows the audience how similar they are.
-owever this shot is yet again in contrast
with the lyrics as the lyrics allow the
audience to understand how their
relationship is going through a bad phase
and creates the idea that this shot is a
flashbac. of the couples relationship. This
will then cause the audience to
empathise. Interte!tuality is shown I this
shot as it is very similar to a shot in /ate
0ashs music video 1oundations where the
artist is singing about their relationship in
a negative light however on screen it is
shown positively.

A cut is used half way through the lyrics
'you and me.( In the ne!t shot a close up
of the artists face is shown this allows
the audience to understand that the lyrics
'#ou and me( are no longer applicable in
this relationship.
Shot type and camera movement
wide shot of the artist and the camera
tilts downwards as the artist sits
down.
Analysis
The use of a wide shot allows the
audience to see how the girlfriend is now
sitting on her own in an empty room. The
mise en scene allows the audience to
presume this room is the .itchen she
shares with her boyfriend. The use of this
shot matches the lyrics as the lyrics
create the idea that the relationship is
virtually over and due to the positioning
of the girlfriend and the composition of
the frame it shows how she is now lonely.
The props used in this shot cause the
audience to presume that the boyfriend
has laid out this romantic brea.fast for
her to try get the relationship bac. on
trac..

$ong ta.e is used to highlight the
loneliness of the girlfriend a cut is used
at this end of this shot also.
Shot type and camera movement
trac.ing motion filmed in a long shot
Analysis
The long shot and trac.ing motion used
allows the audience to see how they are
happy together and for the audience to
feel li.e they are part of the
relationship.The lyrics match the action
shown in this shot as the lyrics are very
playful and up beat which matches how
the couple are acting together on screen.
The mise en scene allows the audience to
see the location in which the couple are
in and how they are alone on a date this
intensifies the couples feelings towards
eachother. The lighting and colour of the
shot has a slightly blue tint which allows
the audience to conclude that this shot is
a flashbac. of the couples relationship to
when they were happy.

&any cuts and )ump cuts are used in the
same setting to create a montage of the
couples happy times together. The ne!t
shot shows the girlfriend to be on her own
therefore this confirms that the
relationship is virtually over.
Shot type and camera movement
mid shot filmed with a hand held
camera.
Analysis
The use of a mid shot filmed with a hand
held camera allows the audience to see
how the couple are arguing and intensifies
the conflict in the relationship. The use of
a shallow focus also confirms to the
audience that the relationship is over due
to the boyfriend being filmed out of
focus. The mid shot also allows the
audience to see the location of the
argument and how the troubles in their
relationship are no longer private.
