Best Thing I Never Had Music Video

This music video will be for the song ’Best Thing I Never Had’ by Kaitlin. She is signed to a record
label called Sony. The genre of this song and music video is pop. The target audience of this music
video is fun and loving 16-25 year olds. The music video is a hybrid of narrative and performance
with the concept of two best friends who are both girls, one has fallen in love for her friend. She
believes there is a possibility that they could become a couple but, her friend does not return the
feelings. It is also a narrative as there will be a storyline which is a day where they are hanging out.
Copyright approval has been gained for to use this song which means Kaitlin can use this song for
her video.

Overview;
The video begins with the girl portraying the artist getting ready for the day, she is making an effort
to look her best. The main character believes that this is a date so, she looks through a variety of
outfits, she gets dressed up in a dress and puts on a full face of make-up. Kaitlin picks up her phone
to send a text saying what time to get to her house and when she goes onto her phone you can see
that her lock screen is a photo of her and her best friend. She tries with the day by creating what is a
typical date for someone you like, a candle lit dinner. This will hint her feelings. She will spend time
getting the house ready to make sure it’s the best for her and then she will wait for her best friend to
arrive. Her friend finally arrives, and she rushes to the door. She opens the door and the facial
expression of her friend is confused but she goes along with it. They both sit down, and she reveals
her feelings whilst placing her hand on her friend’s hand. Her friends face drops and instantly stands
up and leaves. She shuts the door the runs down the street. The girl runs to the door, but she is
already gone. The character of Kaitlin begins to get annoyed at herself and puts her head in her
hands. She begins to pace then throws the flowers onto the floor in anger. In between these scenes I
will have lip syncing of the real artist in many locations, she will have a happy facial expression as she
sings due to the fact she is singing about being over her friend and the crush she has on her is gone.
She will be thinking back to the past situation and thinking about how she is past that and has
moved on.

Characters;
The main character in this video is the girl who has fallen for her friend and this will be played by an
actress who is playing the role of Kaitlin in the past. The real artist is lip syncing throughout.. She has
written the song in first person based on an experience she has had. She is reliving this memory
through the music video. She is gay and her friend is straight and therefore does not return the
feelings.

Mise-en-scene;
The colours within the music video will be natural as I will be filming mainly using natural lighting. It
will get darker during the dinner as I will keep the room slightly dark so that the candles can light up
the room as this seems more romantic and this is how Kaitlin wants to show her feelings in the music
video. The costumes will be one dressy outfit and one casual outfit as this is the only significance in
the video as colours and styles do not matter. The main props used will be mobile phones as this will
be used to show the audience how each of the girls feel about the situation. I will also use flowers so
that she can hint to her friend that she likes her. I will need props to create the dinner so I will need
a table, candles, plates to represent the dinner.

Equipment;
A camera, 3 actresses, After Effects, tripod (possibly).

Possible struggles;
As I must rely on other people to act within my music video I have to start filming early as if they say
they are not available to help at a certain time I might not get it filmed in time. This means I will have
to rush to find someone else last minute and try and finish it before it is due in.

Summary;
Overall, I will be creating a music video of Kaitlin’s experience where she is falling in love with her
friend but the feelings were not returned. The video will begin fun and upbeat but then gets sadder
during the middle. Towards the end she will trying to bring the mood up by trying to resolve the
situation.
