Discover Kent
By Cynthia Hochswender
Even to other residents of Litcfeld County,
Kent can be a bit of a mystery. Whic is odd,
since its one of the towns with the most to
ofer to visitors and locals alike.
In addition to the excellent public grammar scool,
there are three highly rated private high scools. Te
Housatonic River fows through it, intersecting with
notable waterfalls, at Bulls Bridge and Kent Falls State
Park (featured on our cover in this issue; Katie Washer,
in the tie-dyed shirt, was there playing Frisbee with
her friend, Anika Bonwetsc). Te Appalacian Trail
runs through it and runners from the Tri-state region
run through it as well, for the annual Pumpkin Run
(featured in this issue). But it is in some ways remote
from other towns in the area. Whether youre a visitor
from a distant town or corner of the state, or a resident
of the nearby Northwest Corner, there is muc to
discover in Kent.

Finding a little bit of
heaven, on two wheels
By Cynthia Hochswender
For those who arent cycle afcionados, the bikes tend to
blur together as one large macine, piloted by a person in
blac leather. But closer examination reveals that, as with
so many things in life, no two cycle-and-rider pairs are the
same.
On a recent late summer afernoon, we took a tour
down Main Street to cat with bikers about their macines,
and about why they love to visit Kent. Tis is just a small
random sampling; if you want to learn more, stop a biker
and ask some questions. When approaced with respect,
they respond in kind.
Love them or hate them, motorcycles are a huge
part of the landscape in Kent, both on the curvy,
scenic roads and parked in the center of town.
Jefrey Bachand
Bristol, Conn.
2006 Harley-Davidson Night Train
Jefrey Bacand and a friend had just parked their Harleys
and were preparing to do a litle shopping in the antique
shops on Main Street on a sunny Sunday. Tey ride, they
said, as ofen as possible, every weekend if they can.
Kent is a favorite destination because, Its a nice, quaint
town. We like the shops and the atmosphere. We always get
cofee, we usually shop for antiques and especially like Te
Primitive Home.

2005 Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom
John Mraz has been riding
motorcycles for 35 years, and was
riding dirt bikes for years before that.
Kent is a frequent destination for
him, he said, because I love the views
I see when Im riding, its a beautiful
litle town. Te people are nice, too. I
get a lot of waves as I ride by.
Alex Wlcek
Bridgeport, Conn.; 2006 Harley-Davidson Deluxe
On a recent Sunday, Alex Wlcek
was riding a friends bike because his
own was in the shop.
My bike is a 2006 Harley Road
King, but it has a fat rear tire,
he said. I have two others, a 1996
Harley-Davidson Heritage Sofail and
a 1967 Harley-Davidson Shovelhead.
Ive been riding since I was 15 years
old, so thats 45 years.
I used to live in Kent, many years
ago, from when I was about 6 years
old, in the last house before the Fife
N Drum, and I also lived on the dirt
road by Kent Falls. So coming bac
here is nostalgic for me.
I like being here because there are
fewer people than in Bridgeport. I love
the roads, the scenery is gorgeous.
And you cant get beter cofee than at
Kent Cofee and Chocolate.

John James was in Kent with a small group of other
motorcyclers and said they are riders in recovery who
have been touring together for more than two decades.
We send out a group text saying where were meeting,
and when. Today we met in Shelton and rode to Kent,
whic we ofen do at this time of year. We stopped at
Kent Falls, Bulls Bridge and of course Kent Cofee and
Chocolate.
Although he has several bikes and has been riding for
three decades, James said that the Ultra Limited is his main
ride.

Tucer Stankus is a youngster compared to most of
the other cyclists who stop here, but hes old enough
to appreciate a good thing suc as the town of Kent,
whic he visits on rides in a group that is made primarily

and the many outdoor sculptures in town, especially the

Certainly there are women who ride their motorcycles
into town, but certainly they are also in the minority, and
usually they come as part of a couple or with a larger
(mostly male group). Sandra Valente has been riding for
about three years, and goes out with a group, as part of a
couple.
Her Sofail Heritage is a new ride, replacing smaller bikes
that she rode until she got the hang of the larger, heavier
macine.
When I was a kid, my uncle would take me out and
let me ride on the bac of his motorcycle, thats when I
developed a taste for it, she said. About three or four years
ago I took the motorcycle riding course so I could learn how
to do it, and then I worked my way up to this bike.
Coming to Kent on weekends is one of the rewards for
puting in that efort.
Its so quaint here, she said. Im a country girl and I
like being here, in the country.

On Kent: Its scenic, it has a lot of
good roads that lead to it and there are
good places to get lunc, cofee and

Charles J. Egervari
Oxford, Conn.; Aprilia RS V4
Tis is a race bike, Charles Egervari said, standing beside his sleek, low bike
and wearing serious racing leathers. Im not a cruiser. Tis is a high-powered,
fast bike. It puts out a lot of horsepower and has a lot of torque. It does very well
on racetracs, and on roads like the ones around here. Were always looking for
the curviest, most winding roads.
I ride with a group that has similar high-powered bikes. We like Dutcess
County, and we like it here. Tis is always our last stop, and then we go home.
Kent is the mecca, the heaven of motorcycle riding. Ive been coming here
for 20 years or more. Tey even named a drink for us here, at Kent Cofee and
Chocolate. If you ask for the Bikers Usual, thats us. Its moca ice cream, a shot
of espresso, some cocolate. Its our invention.

Steve Mastrianni was in Kent for the very frst time when we spoke to him.
Hes been riding for the past 16 years, and has traveled all over the state. Tis
time he and a friend cose Kent because its halfway between New Britain and
her home in New York state.
Now that hes seen it, hes sure to return.
Its gorgeous here, he said. I was expecting it to be a litle more mom-and-
pop but this is great. Its like the Vanilla Bean Cafe, whic is a famous biker stop
in Pomfret. Tere arent that many places that are so welcoming to people who
come and hang out, and maybe happen to be on a motorcycle when they arrive.
Tis has been very refreshing.

Bar, Tim Andrew said. Te famous
motorcycle hangout in Danbury

many bikers have made Kent their
starting point.
Andrew is a collector of two-
wheeled conveyances and has about
20 motorcycles. Te Indian he was
riding on a recent sunny Sunday is,
he said, my favorite when its not
broken.
Te company that makes the Indian

Its been in and out of business, and is
now bac in production for the fourth

Te Indian is a beautiful bike with
a classic look, he said. And Kent is a

Preserve has history, beauty and trails

For more than 100 years this special
place has drawn visitors eager to be
reinvigorated and relax by its clear

peaceful vistas. For many of them, the
place took hold in their hearts; even if
they moved away they never forgot it.
How many of us have a place like that

we wish we could go bac to? What

Tis year the Kent Land Trust successfully purcased a former Girl
Scout camp called Camp Francis, with help from the town, private
donors and the Warren Land Trust (a piece of the property is in
Kents neighboring town of Warren). It was a heroic efort that
has saved a property with historic and environmental signifcance.

Trust acquisition positive, and with
excitement that the property will be
open to the public. Former Scouts
have contacted us to send us their
congratulations, share their memories,
and even to sing songs over the
phone!
Tere were six larger buildings
on the property including the Scouts
staf house, a lodge, maintenance
building, ranger house, dining hall
and lake cabin. With the exception
of the maintenance building and
the lodge, these buildings have been
removed as part of the restoration
plan for the preserve. We have
retained the bones of the staf
house and dining hall in the form of
the cimneys, as well as the stately
fagpole by the dining hall with the
Girl Scout fnial atop.
We are actively working with the
Kent Historical Society to collect
and arcive Girl Scout historical
information for potential display and
commemoration in the future; this
may include a special trail within the
preserve interior.
The former town center
Prior to the Girl Scouts, the
property was the center of activity
as the hub of East Kent Hamlet
and part of the setlement known as
Bromica (not to be confused with
Bromica Mountain). It was the site of
Kents frst iron forge in 1740, known
as Morgans Forge.
Morgans Forge made pig iron
and never progressed to the level of
furnace that they had in Flanders
(whic was a bloomer forge).
But, with the damming of Beemon
Pond, there were two mills (an Upper
Mill and a Lower Mill, called Bronson
Mills) a saw mill and a grist mill,
creating enough activity around the
top of Kent Hollow Road to support
a store, blacsmith, curc and post
ofce. When the industry level had
peaked, the Beemons operated a
fshery in the pond and took on
summer boarders in their home.
In the propertys interior, the
Barnums built a farmhouse and
installed a farmer there who used one
side of the house; the family used the
other side during the summers and
came up from Naugatuc for visits
in the country. We have photos and
the memoirs of Dorothy (Barnum)
Venter, who has visited and who
joined us for the opening ceremony
at the East Kent Hamlet Preserve
in August 2014. Dorothy, who is
now 101 years old, recalls that her
grandfather built a house on a long
hillside with felds sloping away in
front of it. Beyond the house and
barns were hillsides forested with
blac walnut and buternut trees,
oaks, maples and hicories and a
few great gaunt skeletons of the once
mighty American cestnut tree that
had succumbed to the blight.
I remember playing in the
meadow beside the house, where
there were wildfowers and bees
humming in the sun. Of to one side
was a wooded glen with a tumbling
brook. Tere my grandmother
introduced me to lady-slipper, trillium,
shy white hepatica, yellow adders
tongue, Jac-in-the-pulpit and Indian
pipe.
As important as this preserve was
and is to the Girl Scouts; as important
as it was to Dorothy Venter and her
family, and to the original setlers
of our community; it is equally
meaningful to those of us who make
Kent our home now.
Kent First Selectman Bruce Adams
gave his remarks at the opening
ceremony with his grandsons at
his side, surmising that when the
townspeople voted to contribute
town funds to this project they were
thinking about how a place that had
been cained for a decade or so would
now be open to us and our cildren,
forever.
Tis means something to our towns
because most of us can remember
either going to camp there, working

Before there was iron, there had to be coal
By Sam Rathbun
Te hikers met up on a summer
day in the shadow of the remnants of
the old iron forge on the grounds of
the Connecticut Antique Macinery
Assocation and the Eric Sloane
Museum.
Smith explained the history of the
iron industry in the area as well as the
process of making iron from ore.
Before the iron there had to be the
fre, whic was built inside the furnace
over the course of several days until it
reaced the optimum temperature for
smelting. Ten a precisely measured
Tis summer, the Kent Historical Society (KHS) focused on the
towns iron industry history. In addition to exhibits at the societys
headquarters, there were two hikes led by former KHS Executive
Director Marge Smith, including one that shed light on the fascinating
story of how the carcoal was made that powered the furnaces.
mixture of limestone, iron ore and
either coal or carcoal was poured into
the top of the furnace.
Once heated properly, molten iron
accumulated at the botom of the
furnace, whic was then funneled into
several cannels carved into a sand
casting foor in front of the furnace.
Once the molten iron cooled, it was
broken into smaller pieces, called pigs
or bars, and sold.
Smith also pointed out stone
remnants of a dam along the stream
and remnants of an old wheelhouse
located along the bank. Te dam
redirected the water into a millrace
that powered the waterwheel, whic
operated piston-like blowing tubes
that forced air through a pipe and into
the furnace. Te air helped the fre
inside the furnace reac the optimum
temperature needed for the smelting
process.
Te hikers then piled into cars
(whic of course made them motorists,
for a moment, rather than hikers) and
drove to the north end of the park,
where Smith led them along a path
to the sites of old carcoal mounds
or pits located deep within the
surrounding woods.
Charcoal was a fundamental
ingredient in the iron-making process
because it burned hoter and cleaner
than wood. However, carcoal was

not readily available and needed to be
made by workers called colliers.
First the colliers would build a
carcoal pit deep in the woods by
creating a circular fat surface, 30 to
40 feet across, with drainage ditces
cut along the sides. Ten they would
place a pole (or fagan) in the center of
the pit.
Te fagan, approximately 4 inces
in diameter, was surrounded by a
triangular cimney made of 18-inc-
long split wood. Te cimney was then
half flled with kindling. Around the
cimney they staced vertical rows of
4-foot lengths of wood, three lengths
high and many layers thic, until the
pile covered most of the fat surface.
When the collier was ready to
fre the pit, the pile was covered
with leaves and 1 to 3 inces of
soil or sod to control the burn. Te
cimney was then flled to within
a foot of the opening. Most ofen
the pile was carged by dropping
burning carcoal into the cimney and
covering the opening. However, it was
sometimes lit from the botom as well.
Te collier and his assistants had
to watc the pile carefully to prevent
blowouts that might cause a faming of
the pile.
Controlling the oxygen going to the
pile was a delicate mater. Too muc
might cause the pile to catc fre, too
litle could result in an unsatisfactory
burn. Colliers ofen had to cut or dig
holes at various spots on the pile as it
burned to ensure the proper amount of
air could get in.
Sometimes during the frst 24 hours
of the burn, the collier was required
do what was called jumping the pile.
Tis task was extremely dangerous and
required the collier to climb atop the
smoking pile and jump on it to compact
the wood and assure an even burn.
As the burn continued and the
smoke and steam began to subside,
long-tined carcoal rakes were used
to rake the already produced carcoal
from the top and perimeter. If the
carcoal made a tinkling sound as it
fell, the collier knew he had a good
batc. Dirt from the ring was again
used to cover the raked spots, and the
burn continued.
Te amount of time a single burn
lasted depended on the amount and
type of wood used. Te majority would
last between three and 10 days, with
eac burn producing roughly 35 to 45
bushels of carcoal per cord of wood.

A 5-mile race with costumes
By Chelsea Edgar
And even if he doesnt feel this
particular urge, he will at least need
to satisfy his curiosity about whether
its physically possible to run a 5-mile
road race while pretending to be a
graphing calculator. (Spoiler alert: It
is!)
One of Kents premier athletic
events, the annual Pumpkin Run,
is a unique venue in whic suc
experiments can be tried. Held on
the last Sunday of the month (note
the proximity to that other costumed
marathon of late autumn: Halloween),
it is a serious run that rewards
participants not only for their speed

In 2013, costume winners included
the Tree Blind Mice for best group
costume; a dapper-looking Captain
Hook for best overall costume; and
Cruella de Vil and one Dalmatian for
best family costume.
Te number of racers hiting the
course in mufi has been increasing
every year. In 2014, for the 38th
annual run (held Oct. 26), a special
prize was ofered for the most creative
costume.
And thats just for the adults.
Children are also encouraged to run
in costume. For the youngest runners,
this might seem like a perfectly
normal way to spend a Sunday
afernoon.
Last year, in 2013, about 15 Kent
Center Scool students ran the 1-mile
Fun Run and also completed the
Kids Marathon, reacing their goal

Tere is also a half-mile Fun Run

one very tiny competitor dressed as a

Runners are not required to

More than 500 runners take part
in the Pumpkin Run eac year. It is
sponsored by the Kent Chamber of
Commerce as a way to atract visitors
to town. Its also a fundraiser, not just
for camber projects but also for local
carities.
In 2013, runners were invited to
join two fundraising teams. One was

money for the families of cildren

Thinking small when it comes to retail
By Sam Rathbun
Here, the retail world is made up of
small businesses run by local people
who are catering to the needs of their
neighbors. As at an earlier, simpler
time, that sometimes means a shopper
has to go to several stores to get all
his or her errands done. But people
dont seem to mind; some even enjoy
the opportunity it gives them to make
a shopping trip into an outing and a
cance to see some friends.
Jacie Bergman, owner of Farm
Country Soup, is one of these small
business owners. Located in the
In todays day and age, big box stores rule the retail world. Drive

clubs. And then take a drive through Kent, and its like a trip bac

building that used to house Stroebels
bakery, Bergman celebrated her one-
year anniversary in Kent in 2014.
Her shop provides the community
with fresh artisan soups as well as
specialty foods and baked goods.
Everything is farm-to-table and
is freshly made eac morning by
Bergman and her staf.
She wasnt always a small-business
owner. Before she started Farm
Country, delivering soup to stores
and homes around the Tri-state area,
she spent the ealier part of her career
delivering babies. She worked as a
delivery nurse in hospitals in New
York and then moved up here to work
at Sharon Hospital.
One day, she decided shed had
enough and wanted to try something
new. Shed always been an avid

other prepared foods, selling them at
farmers markets around the area.
Her business has been growing,

When asked what she loves most
about being a small business owner,
Bergman replied, Te connection

fresh food is hard to fnd.
For Ira Smith, owner of Kent Wine
and Spirits, the connection to the
community is also what makes being
a small business owner so great.
Smith has been in the wine and
spirits business for his entire career.
He has worked as a wholesaler, an
importer, a retailer, and has created
wine lists for restaurants in New
Haven and other cities.
In 1995, afer moving to Sharon
with his wife, he was presented with
an opportunity to purcase Kent Wine
that he felt he could not refuse.
For Smith, its about the
relationships he builds with his
customers. He personally greets eac
one as they walk in the door. Hes
been able to build great relationships
through the knowledge that he and
his staf posses. He has two rules for
employees: Youd beter know about
wine, beer and spirits; and youd
beter not ever make something up if
you dont know the answer.
Its also about giving bac to the
community. Te greatest thing about
a town like Kent, he said, is the
philosophy of I will do all I can for
you, because I know you would do the
same for me.
In a small community like Kent,
when youre able to give bac, you
can actually see your eforts move the
needle, he said.
Tis is why he has become so
involved with local organizations and
groups, providing wine for parties and
events so that the money goes to the
organization, exactly where it belongs.
While the convenience of geting
everything for ceap in one stop at a
big box store will always be atractive,
local businesses will always have a
leg up in towns like Kent.

Buy Locally, Live Locally
Locally owned businesses such
as those seen in the pages of this
directory give character to our
region and offer an alternative to
the chain stores that now seem to
control so much of the American
landscape. Please support these
businesses, and the people who
work at them. They drive the area
economy and improve the quality of
life for all in the Tri-state region.
Support your area businesses!
