AFTER an extended summer, the weath-
er seems to be on the turn and as we
head deeper into October it is time to
ask whether your home is winter ready.
The glorious early autumn weather
may have allowed us a reprieve from
heating and keeping warm but now is
the perfect chance to carry out home
health MOT.
After all, prevention is always better,
and in the case of household disas-
ters, cheaper than a cure.
So grab a notebook and pen and
give your house a full check-up.
Begin at the roof.
Check for loose and broken tiles,
damaged felt and any sagging of the
beams. While youre up there check
the chimney for any structural dam-
age or bird nests.
If you are solid fuel users, now is the
time to get chimneys swept.
Check your gutters and down pipes
for any cracks, blockages, moss and
debris. A professional clean can be
reasonable and a very good invest-
ment for a leak and damp-free winter.
Windows and doors get a check
over next as you search for any
draughts or damage. To combat
draughts, invest in new draught ex-
cluders, a better fitting letterbox and
perhaps new and heavy curtains for
both doors and windows.
Pipes should also be checked to en-
sure they are in good working order.
Get your boiler serviced and heat-
ing systems checked to ensure they
are running as efficiently as possible.
Bleed radiators to ensure they are
running smoothly and take meter
readings now and regularly through-
out the season to keep on top of fuel
usage.
Top up solid fuel and oil supplies
now, this could save you cash as win-
ter progresses and will ensure you
not left in the cold.
Dont forget the garden and
grounds. Check walls and fences for
damage and ensure garages, sheds
and outbuildings are in good order.
Take advantage of dry days to
sweep, rake and clear garden debris
and treat and cover furniture to pro-
tect against the elements.
