Senecas engineering pilot program to expand

LRHSD board of education approves grant to bring Pathways to Engineering to rest of district

in the Lenape Regional High
School District to hop on the pathway to engineering this year.
Next year, students at Shawnee
and Cherokee will be able to join
them.
The board of education approved a grant from Lockheed
Martin for $31,200 at last weeks
meeting that will allow the district to expand its Pathways to
Engineering pilot program to all
four high schools.
With this grant, we'll finally
get to expand (the program) to
Shawnee and Cherokee next
year, Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said. This is the second
consecutive year that Lockheed
Martin is helping us with a
grant.
Last year, Lockheed Martin donated an identical $31,200 grant to
help get Pathways to Engineering
off the ground at Lenape and
Seneca.
This partnership opportunity
provided by Lockheed Martin has
enabled us to add a rigorous

In the first year of the program, students at Lenape and
Seneca are participating in an Introduction to Engineering course
where they are introduced to the
subject.

year, explained the students are
learning the engineering process
so they will be able to succeed in
future courses.
Theyre using the engineering
design process, which is similar
to the scientific process, Condurso said. Theyll be keeping an en-

gineering notebook.
The students are also participating in their first engineering
projects that are meant to emulate the same thought process engineers use in the real world.
Already this year, students at
both schools have made a number
of projects. One is a device called
a fling machine. The machine is
made out of balloons, pipe cleaners, rubber bands, paper clips and
aluminum foil, and is designed to
launch a cotton ball as far as possible.
Another project students have
worked on is a miniature cable
car. The car is made up of rubber
bands, cardboard tubes, tape and
a plastic propeller. Students were
asked to move the car with a figurine inside along a thin strand of
fishing line.
Students participating in the
program will move on to more advanced courses in the coming
years. During their senior year,
the classes will be equivalent to
college-level courses.
Its modeled after a senior engineering experience at the college level, Condurso said. They
will partner with a mentor in
business and industry.
The Pathways to Engineering
program will be open to Shawnee
and Cherokee freshmen beginning in the fall of 2015.

Parenting a child with special

needs can feel like a lonely journey, but a group of parents in
Shamong is doing its part to
make an IMPACT.
The Indian Mills Parent Advisory Cooperative Team was started in 2010 as part of a requirement by the state Department of
Education administrative code.
The DOE requires each district
board of education to ensure that
a special education parent advisory group is in place to provide
input on issues concerning students with disabilities. The state
only requires the group meet
once a year, but Patricia DiMona
and Margaret Giannecchini
wanted more for the parents in
Shamong.
We wanted an active parents

association. We wanted to come

together and be involved in our
district but really to let other parents of children with special
needs know that this is a resource
that is available to them, DiMona said.
Giannecchini said the parentrun group has a mission to make
a positive impact in the lives of
students in the community who
have learning, social or behavioral differences.
The response from parents
has been really positive, which is
wonderful for us, Giannecchini
said. We have parents who are
extremely happy to know something like this group exists.
Every month, meetings provide an opportunity to share
ideas, resources and information
from doctors about new treatments parents have tried. DiMona said the meetings allow

parents to learn from each other

and ensure children reach their
highest level of achievement. But
in addition to general meetings,
which allow for these discussions,
the group has also brought in expert speakers to Indian Mills Memorial School to present on a variety of topics. Speakers have included a local psychologist speaking about behavior management,
an author speaking about executive functioning and ADHD children and co-authors of two books
traveling with children with special needs.
On Nov. 20, the group arranged
for Michelle Tyler, from the
Statewide Parent Advocacy Network, to present on bullying prevention strategies. The presentation focused on what schools are

teachers, students and parents,

small businesses. Last year, a study reported an estimated $5.7 billion was
spent at small businesses on that day!
A vibrant and successful local business community has a trickle-down effect on our own pockets. Just think:

Our small businesses are already
fighting an uphill battle against the
marketing dollars of the big box
stores.

Five Shamong students score perfect on NJ-ASK

Each year, New Jersey challenges its students to do their best on the states Assessment of Skills and Knowledge, commonly
referred to as NJ-ASK.
Districts establish high measures of
achievement for their teachers and students, with the goal of achieving 100 percent proficiency in all areas tested. The
teaching force accepts that challenge with
independently developed and professionally delivered lessons to ensure the whole
student body receives the best possible education. Their philosophy has produced exceptional results over the years and last
year was no exception.
On Oct. 21, the Shamong Board of Education recognized these students for their
accomplishment.

When the results of the NJ-ASK were received, 51 students from grades three
through eight achieved perfect scores in either mathematics or science. Remarkably,
within this dignified group, five students
Juliana Graeber, Nathan Groody, Rylee
Langdon and Caroline Yoder, currently in
sixth grade joined Alexis Tierney, a freshman at Seneca High School, in achieving
perfection in both areas. Both totals are an
increase over last years mark.
Other members of this years 300 Club
in mathematics include third graders Peyton Dooley, Maxwell Friedman, Makena
Hagan, Andrew Hunt, Aidan ORourke,
Evan Sturges, Dylan Tiver and Lawrence
Valenzano. Fourth graders Rebecca Capobianco, Will Feldscher, Madden Langdon,

Meredith Pavlik and Meredith Waropay.

Fifth graders Allison Harvey and Paul Paetow. Sixth graders Sophia Cino, Dylan McNally, Andrew Rodeschin and Nicholas
Webb. Seventh grader Colin Boisvert.
