AARON
I know. I just feel bad for making you do all the heavy lifting.
Hes my responsibility.
Rebecca leans forward and squeezes Aarons hand.
REBECCA
(matter-of-factly)
Thats what familys for.
Aaron looks at her affectionately for a moment.
AARON
Have you heard from him yet?
REBECCA
No. [BEAT] I dont really want to talk about it.
AARON
What about the Thule Society then?
REBECCA
Bupkis. Total dead end. Everything I find is from 70 years ago.
When they went underground they went deep.
AARON
So, no word on the streets then?
REBECCA
Its like trying to alert the Ministry of Magic that Voldomort
is back.
AARON
I should not be surprised you made that reference.
REBECCA
I know they must be watching us. There is no possible way they
just up and left when they know we have the Big Guy, but theyre
mighty fracking good at covering their tracks. The whole thing
gives me an ominous feeling, but maybe they wont try anything
with The Golem around.
AARON
Find a different angle? Maybe its like a science experiment;
latent variables. If what youre looking for is hidden, look
for something being affected by it.
3
REBECCA
(contemplatively)
Huh thats a good idea.
I just need to clear my head for a little while. Meanwhile, you
just keep up the studying.
[getting up]
I need to go help Mom get ready for tonight. You coming over?
AARON
I dunno, I might.
REBECCA
Okay, well youre in charge of Gumby tonight.
[she steals a bite of his bagel]
Dont wear yourself out. Get some rest.
[She kisses him on the head and walks away]
Gut Shobbos.
INT. THE APARTMENT MAIN ROOM LATE DAY
AARON walks into the door and is immediately greeted by a
pacing, agitated GOLEM.
GOLEM
Youve come home far too close to the Sabbath. You have made no
preparations.
Aaron ignores the Golem. He shuts the door hard.
CUT TO:
Door frame, theres a cheap looking mezuzah on the door. The top
hole, where the nail attaches it to the door, worn and cracked
from years of use, finally fails and the case slips upside-down,
wobbles on the bottom nail, but ultimately falls to the floor.
Aaron, oblivious, takes off his coat and tosses his keys on the
entry table.
AARON
Yeah, yeah. If I didnt have to worry about you going postal on
the place I wouldnt need to come back at all.
GOLEM
Your disregard for the Laws is irresponsible. You cannot
As the Golem lectures him, Aaron casually places a hand over the
Golems heart, leans up, and whispers into the Golems ear.
The Golem stops midsentence and his shoulders sag. He stares
vacantly. He is deactivated. Aaron looks at him for a moment.
AARON
(sarcastically)
Shabbat Shalom.
He looks at the Golem standing where it had been when the Smoke
Creature ran off, slumped over. Hes deactivated again.
ACT TWO
INT. HIMMEL HOUSE ENTRY WAY LATE NIGHT
AARON bursts through the door unannounced.
AARON
Becca! Becca! Where are you?
REBECCA rushes in from one room over, full of worry.
REBECCA
Aaron!? Its almost midnight! What happened?
AARON
(out of breath)
Something got in. Something attacked me. This shadow, smoke man,
I dont know what, it tried to kill me.
REBECCA
Oh my God Aaron, are you alright?
[She starts to touch his face, like a mother whose child just
got hurt]
AARON
The Golem. He came to life, he saved me. But I turned him off
like you told me to
REBECCA
Pekuach Nefesh.
AARON
What?
REBECCA
(rolling her eyes)
Pekuah Nefesh. Its permissible to break the Laws in order to
save a life. Where is it now?
AARON
I dont know it disappeared into the shadows
REBECCA
(sincerely)
No, the Golem.
AARON
Still at the apartment. After the shadow thing disappeared it
went back offline.
REBECCA
(calmly)
Itll be fine there. As long as youre living it cant be
controlled by anyone but you.
AARON
I gotta get out of here.
REBECCA
No, you need to stay put
AARON
What if it comes back. Im putting you all in danger.
REBECCA
No. Nothing otherworldly can get past the mezuzahs without being
invited.
AARON
[BEAT]
The mezuzahs? Are you serious?
REBECCA
It never occurred to you that it was a bit odd we put little
scrolls of Torah on all of our thresholds?
AARON
Now that you mention it, yeah, thats a bit odd.
REBECCA
They serve as wards.
AARON
But our place is covered in them.
REBECCA
Well, one must have failed.
AARON
What if one fails here, what if it can get past them somehow?
REBECCA
Then I guess well find out. Come; let me get you something to
eat.
INT. HIMMEL HOUSE - KITCHEN CONTINUOUS
AARON sits at the kitchen table, facing REBECCA who is pulling
dishes of leftovers from the oven, the stove, the refrigerator,
etc. Aaron has a plate in front of him full of food, which he is
slowly eating off of.
AARON
Do you think the Thule Society sent it after me?
REBECCA
Well, Ockhams razor makes me want to say yes. The simplest
answer is likely the correct one. But we cant be sure. Besides,
wouldnt they know that the Golem would stop it?
AARON
Unless theyre just testing it.
REBECCA
Perhaps. Theyve been known for their patience. As skeevy as it
sounds, this may all be one giant experiment.
AARON
Well, thats comforting.
REBECCA
Well, one things for sure, this, sadly, changes everything. Up
until now, we were going after them. Now, weve lost the
offensive, and we have to assume our enemy knows more than we
do.
AARON
And if its not the Thule? What if its just a random attacker?
REBECCA
Then we need to find out why its after us.
AARON
[sighs, running his hands through his hair in exasperation]
I dont know what to do. I'm not cut out for this, I don't know
a thing about war or battle or even how to protect myself.
REBECCA
Aaron, calm down, we'll figure this out.
AARON
(angry)
It was in my home! It tried to kill me!
Rebecca stands still, staring at him, heartache in her eyes. She
sits down at the table and squeezes his hand reassuringly.
REBECCA
I know. I get it, I do. But youre not helpless.
AARON
(cutting her off)
Im not helpful either. I don't know how to command the Golem,
hell I don't even know what it does or how it works.
REBECCA
Itll come with time.
AARON
We dont have any time! This is happening, now.
REBECCA
Yes. It is. And we need to be prepared, both of us, mentally,
physically, but most of all emotionally. I know youre
overwhelmed, but you have to believe that weve got this, you
have to believe that we are fully capable of winning this
battle, understand?
Aaron looks unconvinced but gives her a nod.
REBECCA (cont.)
Okay, we need to find out what attacked you. Maybe if we can
identify it, we can find where it came from. But not until after
Shabbos.
AARON
Are you serious? Becca, you just want us to sit here and play
board games for a day.
REBECCA
[Scolding him]
Hey! Youre not going to make any progress if youre exhausted,
and youre not going to get anywhere in learning to control the
Golem if you disregard the Mitzvot so haphazardly. If it was
good enough for Rabbi Lowe, its good enough for you.
AARON
Rabbi Lowe was dealing with disgruntled peasants, Ive got
SHADOW NINJAS attacking me!
REBECCA
[folding her arms]
Do what you want then. But Im not helping you until motzei
Shabbos.
They stare each other down for a moment.
AARON
[throwing his hands up] Alright fine. You win.
REBECCA
[standing back up victoriously] Thats what I thought.
[running the sentences together in a nagging, Jewish Mother,
tone] Far an akshen iz kein refuah nito. Dont fill up, I have
desert.
INT. BATHHOUSE DAY
A luxurious looking Turkish bathhouse, soft light creeps in from
some sky lights, the room is cozy and dim, and the air is hazy
with steam. A handsome MAN mid 30s with dark complexion, dressed
in stylish black, rock-star clothing, all leather, black denim
and chains is speaking to WOMAN, mid-30s, dark complexion as
well, very well dressed, wearing a designer business dress and
Louboutins.
DARK MAN
Its a Golem, for sure.
DARK WOMAN
And the Rabbi?
DARK MAN
[scoffs] Hes no Rabbi. Hes just some kid who barely knows how
to even use his Golem.
10
DARK WOMAN
And yet youre lucky you were even able to get into the house.
DARK MAN
I wasnt sure then. I am now.
DARK WOMAN
And now theyll be on their guard. If you were going to kill
him, you should have done it right the first time.
DARK MAN
Well, practice makes perfect.
DARK WOMAN
Do you think theyre a threat?
DARK MAN
Not at the moment. Theyre like cavemen who just discovered
fire.
DARK WOMAN
Well get rid of them now while we have the chance. I dont need
new Hunters sniffing around. Once theyre dead, Ill take care
of the Golem.
DARK MAN
And if theyve fixed the wards?
DARK WOMAN
Attack them when theyre not at home, idiot.
ACT THREE
INT. THE APARTMENT MAIN ROOM NIGHT
REBECCA walks into the apartment, arms full of leftovers from
her parents. AARON, right behind her, flicks on the light. THE
GOLEM, awake, is standing right in front of her.
GOLEM
There was an intruder in the house.
Rebecca and Aaron jump out of fright.
11
REBECCA
Yes yes I know. Were looking into it.
Rebecca moves past the Golem and heads to the kitchen
GOLEM
The place is vulnerable.
AARON
Yeah, we get it.
Aaron brushes past the Golem, clearly agitated. Rebecca begins
unloading the containers onto the counter.
REBECCA
(to Aaron)
So, one of the mezuzahs must be bad. Well need to check them
all.
GOLEM
You were followed.
Aaron and Rebecca freeze, and look at the Golem.
AARON
[walking towards the Golem]
What?
GOLEM
The creature that attacked you, it returned when you did.
(grimacing) I can feel his presence.
Aaron takes a quick glance at Rebecca, who has gone white, and
then storms off towards his bedroom.
REBECCA
Aaron?
INT. THE APARTMENT - AARONS BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
Aaron opens a drawer on his nightstand.
Inside we see a .40 handgun and a clip.
Aaron pulls them both out.
12
13
14
AARON
Yes. [suddenly] Okay, can we talk about what happened out there?
You just went super saiyan, and now you want to pretend like you
just had gas. How did you do that?
REBECCA
[avoiding eye contact]
Its just applied intention. I dunno, I just thought Id give
it a try.
AARON
Give it a try? Its not golf, what did you do?
Rebecca leans back in her chair and looks at Aaron.
REBECCA
The writings all say that the Baalei Shem, the rabbis who
studied the occult, they were able to perform great feats of
power by focusing their kavanah.
AARON
Kavanah, like, force of will?
REBECCA
Yeah, I guess. But, its not its not just wishing something
really hard. Its, I dont know how to explain it. Like a
trance. Ive felt it before, that power I tapped into, but Ive
never used it.
AARON
Could you do that again? It was amazing.
REBECCA
What I did back there, it was risky; I was scared. I probably
shouldnt have done it.
AARON
Yeah, but Becca, that power is a weapon.
REBECCA
A dangerous one! And I dont fully know how to use it. Its like
playing with a grenade. I dont want to toy with it.
Aaron stares at her for a moment, unsatisfied with her reply.
15
AARON
Okay, fine so that leaves us with still not knowing what it was
that attacked us, having no leads, no idea on how to find it, or
kill it, and our only advantage is a clay Goliath that
(aggressively directed towards the Golem) NEVER stops pacing!!
REBECCA
[back to skimming her book]
Ive told you, you need to give him something to do. Hes just
doing maneuvers.
AARON
Well Im sorry I dont have any lumber for him to chop.
REBECCA
(teasingly)
What about coal to cart? Or hay to bale?
AARON
Would you be serious?
REBECCA
[groaning] Okay. Tell him to check the place for anything that
might be bugged, and any traces of supernatural energy.
When thats all done, he should monitor each window in 30 minute
intervals looking for anything suspicious in the neighborhood.
AARON
(to the Golem)
What she said.
GOLEM
(nodding)
As the rebbetzin requests.
Rebecca looks up and shakes her head, as the Golem walks away.
REBECCA
(annoyed)
Im still not a rebbetzin.
AARON
Yeah, why does he always call you that?
Rebecca hesitates, reading the pages of the book in front of
her.
16
REBECCA
A rebbetzin is a wife of a rabbi.
AARON
So he thinks youre my wife?
REBECCA
[Looking up at Aaron]
No. He doesnt have a word for a female Jewish scholar. So he
calls me rebbetzin. According to him, I shouldnt exist.
AARON
Doesnt that just make us a motley crew?
REBECCA
[attempting to get back on topic]
So, what the hell are we dealing with here?
Aaron stares blankly, in front of him, thinking, then suddenly
AARON
Son of a bitch!!
Aaron rushes into the room with the Golem in it. Rebecca
follows.
INT. THE APARTMENT SIDE ROOM CONTINUOUS
AARON
[to the Golem]
Do you know what attacked me.
GOLEM
Yes. It was a Rabisu. An monster of ancient Babylon that lurks
in dark corners and feeds off its victims life energy.
Aaron looks at Rebecca with an expression of why didnt we
think of this sooner?
REBECCA
Huh well that was embarrassingly easy.
AARON
Do you know its weaknesses?
17
GOLEM
Yes. It is vulnerable against salt and fire, tools of
purification.
AARON
Do you know why it was here?
GOLEM
I do not.
REBECCA
Well, two outta three aint bad.
AARON
Yeah, thats definitely a start.
[to the Golem] Have you found any evidence of the Thule Society
spying on us?
GOLEM
I have not. I will continue to monitor the neighborhood for
suspicious activity as commanded.
AARON
[to Rebecca]
Well, at least now we have a lead.
REBECCA
[to the Golem]
Did you find any energies so far?
GOLEM
Yes. I can tell where the Rabisu entered the house.
AARON
And can you tell where it came from?
GOLEM
I cannot.
REBECCA
(to Aaron)
What now?
AARON
[sheepishly grinning]
Now, I have an idea.
18
19
AARON
Alright, Im done playing around. This ends now.
ACT FOUR
INT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE DAY
AARON and REBECCA are preparing in a dusky old abandoned
warehouse. The air is hazy with dust, light barely creaking in
through filthy windows.
A devils trap is painted on the floor in front of a table. The
table has a metal bowl on it, candles, matches, and a symbol
sketched on the table in chalk.
Rebecca looks nervous, a little twitchy, while Aaron inspects
his handiwork.
REBECCA
Are you sure about this?
AARON
Itll be okay. This is the best way to get answers.
REBECCA
But what if were in over our heads?
Aaron rubs Rebeccas arms comfortingly.
AARON
If things go south, well end it. No questions, no hesitation.
Rebecca nods and takes a deep breath. Aaron looks around the
place one last time.
AARON (cont.)
Okay. Ready?
REBECCA
As Ill ever be.
Rebecca walks over to the table and starts lighting candles.
Aaron looks on, pacing a little. Rebecca begins chanting in
Hebrew, slowly, and deliberately, her voice shaking a little
with nervousness.
21
You should be! Because if you let me go, Ill just kill you. And
if you kill me, there will just be more.
The Rabisu has now etched a crude line into the clay of the
Golems thumb.
REBECCA
[cutting in] Why then? Why the bounty on our heads?
RABISU
Because you have a Golem. Do you think that everyone would just
let that go. No, people dont generally like having a WMD in
their backyards. And plenty others would pay a pretty sum to
have it for their own.
Rebecca and Aaron exchange glances. Rebecca is nervous. Aaron is
pensive.
RABISU
[smiling] So you better go ahead and kill me, because if you
dont, Im going to rip her pretty little throat out as soon as
Im free, right in front of your eyes, before I kill you, and
take your Golem for myself.
The Rabisu has successfully scratched through most of the
Golems thumb. He bends the thumb backwards like a cleft tree,
and slips out of his grasp in one swift movement. He heads
directly for Rebecca.
Rebecca gasps, grabs the dish from the table and throws the
contents at the Rabisus face. It was full of coarse salt. It
burns him and he screams.
Aaron is at the Rabisu now. He grabs him in a choke hold and
wrestles him back.
The Rabisu has now recovered from the salt, and the tackle has
pulled him out of the light that was previously on him. He
starts to phase back into his smoke form.
Rebecca turns back to the table and grabs the candle, but before
she can turn back around, the Rabisu has phased and slips out of
Aarons hands.
The Golem grabs him and attempts to pull him back towards the
light, while Rebecca moves forward with the flame.
23
REBECCA
My mother would flay you.
AARON
(laughing)
Yes she would.
[beat]
You always looked out for us.
REBECCA
Well, it comes from being the oldest.
AARON
I just want to be sure Im doing the right thing.
REBECCA
You know youre much more capable than you give yourself credit
for. I may be smart, but youre clever. Youre the one that
thought this whole thing up. Youre the one that figured it all
out.
AARON
And both of us almost died.
[BEAT]
REBECCA
Remember when our grandfather when Zayde Isaac used to talk to
us about World War II? When he would talk about fighting the
Nazis?
AARON
Every holiday, yes
REBECCA
[smiling] You always hated listening to his stories. Your
parents worried it would scare you, and I think my mom was just
ambivalent, but you know my dads parents survived the war too.
And he told me that, if I didnt learn about the past, wed be
doomed to live it again. So I listened. I listened to every
story, every crazy allegation, every amazing miracle. And I
believed it. I believed it all.
[Rebecca looks at Aaron] But you know what was the most
important part of all his stories? That even though they were
outnumbered, and scared senseless, and pretty positive they were
going to all die horribly [she shrugs] they did it anyhow.
25
26
DARK WOMAN
Looks like our little minnows want to swim with the Sharks now.
A man walks into the room. Hes tall and lean, with short hair
slicked to the side. Hes dressed nicely in a suit and tie. Very
40s style classy. On his hand is a Thule Society ring.
MAN IN SUIT
[flippantly] Let them. I always love a challenge.
CUT TO BLACK
27
