Volume and Area of Cones, Spheres and Pyramids

1. The figure shows a model made by joining a right circular solid cone to a solid
hemisphere such that the vertex, V, of the cone is vertically above the centre of the
hemisphere. The diameter of the hemisphere is 40 cm. The height of the cone is 20 cm.
The slant height of the cone is 25 cm.
(a) Find the total surface area of the model.
(b) Find the volume of the model.
(c) Some of these models are packed into a box with dimensions 1 m by 1 m by 1 m. Find
the maximum number of models that can be packed into the box.
(Take to be 3.142 and give your answers correct to 1 decimal place where necessary.)

2. The figure below shows the net of a pyramid, made from a piece of paper. It can be folded
to form a three-dimensional pyramid. It consists of a square base of side 8 cm and 4
congruent isosceles triangles.

Find
(a) the total surface area of the pyramid,
(b) the volume of the pyramid.
(Give your answer correct to 1 decimal place where necessary.)
3. The figure below shows a solid that is made up of a cylinder and a cone. The volume of
the solid is 15000 cm3. The ratio of the height of the cone to the radius of the cylinder to
the height of the cylinder is 3 : 2 : 1. The slant height is 30.4 cm. Find its total surface
area.
(Take to be 3.14 and give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.)

4. A block of wax is made up of a cylinder of height 10 cm and a hemisphere of radius 7 cm.

The block of wax is melted and recast to form a few identical pyramids with square base
of side 4 cm and height 50 cm. Find the maximum number of such pyramids that can be
formed.
(Take to be 22/7.)

5. A trough in the shape of a half cylinder is placed horizontally and water is poured into it.
The radius of the trough is 25 cm and its length is 90 cm. Figure I shows the trough.

(a) Find the volume of water in the trough.

(b) The water in the trough was poured into another container made by joining together a
cylinder and a hemisphere. The radius of the cylinder is 20 cm. Figure II shows the
container. Find the height of the water in the container.
(Take to be 3.142 and give your answers correct to 1 decimal place.)
6. A solid piece of wax is shaped like an ice-cream cone. It consists of a hemisphere joined
to a cone. The radius of the hemisphere is 28 cm and the height of the cone is 50 cm. It is
melted and moulded into a sphere and a square pyramid. The radius of the sphere is the
same as one side of the base of the pyramid. The height of the pyramid is double that of
the side of its base.

Find
(a) the radius of the sphere,
(b) the total volume of the sphere and the pyramid.
(Take to be 22/7 and give your answers correct to 2 decimal places.)
7. The figure below shows a spherical bowl of internal radius 15 cm which is partly filled
with liquid.
(a) If the radius of the horizontal liquid surface is 12 cm, calculate
(i)
the area of the horizontal liquid surface,
(ii)
the height of the liquid surface above the centre of the bowl,
(iii)
the depth of the liquid in the bowl.
(b) Assuming that the volume of water in the spherical bowl is 10000 cm3, find the height
of the water if it is poured into a cone of radius 7 cm.
(Take to be 3.142 and give your answers correct to 3 significant figures where
necessary.)
